Robert Smith, billionaire CEO of VC firm Vista partners, a high-tech investment firm... gave the commencement speech at Morehouse College (an historically-black college) and in his speech announced that he would not only be paying off the student debt of the graduating class (about 400 students), but would create an endowment to help the students from needing loans in the first place.

So sorry, Bernie.... your commie grabbistas trying to take money away from guys like Robert Smith so he can redistribute it to cronies... and his BS socialist policies.... Bah Humbug. Here is a Capitalist guy who is an 8th generation American... giving back to the country that made him what he is. A Billionaire. And he got there through the purest form capitalism... high tech investment. And what is he doing? Not lecturing us about gun control or climate change... he is giving back in the purest way possible, with a gift to 400 graduates and a request to 'pay it forward.' Hell yes! Guess what students... Capitalism just gave you a huge leg up on your life!!!!

Rockefellers built universities and libraries across America. Gates is curing Malaria Carnegie Endowment has educated millions and has created great universities... Cecil Rhodes created massive educational opportunities... Just a few of the ways that billionaires do better than government.

I admit, sSome of them, I think they spend wrongly and on silly (socialist???) indoctrination crap... but at least it is PRIVATE money being used.

Unfortunately, the other side of it is cutting off the Amazon rain forests, destroying the habitat of natives that never saw a white man until a few years ago....for oil we wont need for a long time...and a multitude of other stuff.

Just like a gun or a hammer, capitalism is only as good or evil as the people behind it.

He is a force for the good. We need more of those and less of the other.

Agree.... Your analogy about the gun and hammer is very well-put!

In the hands of a good person, capitalism is an amazing tool. In the hands of evil... it is a weapon.

The same, though, is more true of politics... and I can argue (organized) religion...

It's crazy how horrible people seem to gravitate to bureaucratic institutions...and psychopaths are exceptionally well equipped to exploit systems therein and ascend in the power structures... Examples, catholic church, EVERY govt org, many militaries, etc...

It's also crazy how good some of those institutions are or were at weeding those peoople out- Ranger School, SF Q course were very good at black balling guys who, prior to selection, were pretty good at hiding their inner psychopath. (of course, that was 25+ years ago, it might have chnaged some since then, but based on guys I knew who stayed in MUCH longer than I, I think it was still pretty good at it at least until the mid-late 2000s)

I have been to Morehouse College, my senior year of college.

Enjoyed it. Met some great folks (and some spooky ones riding MARTA) and had some great food. There was the usual college BS, but the guys I met were serious students with excellent academics and big plans. They were living out MLKs idea of “how can I do great” and change things instead of waiting for a handout.
Even got to go to church in the MLK chapel therr with the cutest little thing from NC named Rachel. She was attending the all-girls school next door.....

I think back and am pretty sure that was the first time I met MtnCreek in person....... he was pissy because I was wearing long hair and a yarmulke......
