Hi, I'm new to to this website and just getting started on what I need to shoot 600 yards. I'm sitting here bleary eyed after looking at rifles and scopes for hours. My question is when or why would you want a FFP scope over a SFP scope or vice versa ? Except for SFP being a little cheaper most times. Is there a steadfast way to determine which scope is for what type of shooting... IE hunting ,bench rest shooting or other ?
I'm leaning for FFP for range shooting up to 600 yards ,am I on the right path or is it just personal preference ? Thanks

It really depends on what you want to do. Shoot 600 yard targets, shoot everything in between? Your question has many answers. I have both first and second focal plane optics for various purposes.

Welcome to SH. There is an incredible amount of information here on just about every aspect of using a rifle. The site's search function works pretty well - use it. As a newcomer to the site and to the discipline, the great majority of the questions you have will be common ones, asked and answered here many times. Also, check the pinned topics in each of the sub-forums.

The short answer to your question is, for tactical rifle pursuits, you'll learn that FFP is the way to go. For hunting an maybe bench rest, SFP may be your appropriate option. Get some coffee and a comfortable chair. There's lots of info here about the subject. Just remember - for scopes or anything else - at the end of the day, it's what you prefer, not what other people prefer. And what you prefer will evolve. Enjoy the ride and bring $$.
