I am looking at a few scopes in the sightron lineup (S2 big sky and S3) and I have noticed that they offer a fine plex with a dot. My question is that when you are in the upper magnifications, does the dot take over the entire picture, or are you able to differentiate between target(s) still? This scope will be for target shooting only, with max range of 600 yards for now. Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: fine plex with target dot question

The dot would get smaller relative to the target at higher magnifications. I have an SIII with 1/4 MOA dot, and I do not feel that it obstructs view. At 1000 yards, its only blocking 2 1/2" of your target.

Re: fine plex with target dot question

I have 2 Leupolds 6.5-20X EFR's with fine cross hairs and target dot and have no problem with the dot obscuring the target at 100 yards.

Re: fine plex with target dot question

I have a couple of the 8-32's with the 1/8" target dot, it in now way hampers your ability to shoot small targets, in fact it is designed to aid with this. Excellent scopes for punching holes in known distance targets.

Re: fine plex with target dot question

these are second focal plane scopes so the target gets bigger as you zoom, and the dot/reticle stays the same and 1/8 MOA is only about 1.3" at 1000 yards. If you are planning on shooting stuff smaller than that at that range, more power to you...

Re: fine plex with target dot question

I took the sightron SIII 6-24X50 LRD (1/4MOA dot at max mag) and absolutely loved it for shooting paper. Did not cover up much of the target at all.

+1
I have two SIII 6x24x50. One w/ the dot on a 22-250 squirrel gun and one on my match/LR hunter .280AI w/ mil-dots. Like em both a lot for each intended purpose. I had bought the dot first and was gonna put it on the LR hunter, but was fearful that it would get lost in low light conditions. Good scopes for the price IMO. I shoot matches w/ the mildot and squirrels and steel in the daytime w/ the dot. GTG.

Re: fine plex with target dot question

From what I understand, the SII Big Sky's are SIIs with upgraded glass. I wonder how that glass compares to SIIIs. Could be worth putting on a .22 trainer.
