Ok, I see there is not much tolerence for inexperience here, and for those of you who spared me I would like to say thank you.
I dont know a lot about long range shooting so that is why I have been reading on this forum.
So to answer some of your questions I currently own couple AR-15's .223, Norinco SKS 7.62x39, a 12 gauge, a couple of 9mms, and a .22lr.
Yes i do reload and I'm just getting started so the cost of ammo will not be as bad as eveyone thinks. And yes I have already done my research and basiclly know what is going to cost me to shoot the .300.
I have shot large rifles before(7mm,30-06,.308) so I know about recoil just never owned one.
The reason I dont want to go with a .308 is just a matter of I have a couple buddies that shoot .308 and I dont want to play follow the leader. I dont hunt now so I more than likely will not be hunting with this rifle. More than likely no COMP either just want to be able to go out and shoot long range with others. My distance range I am looking for is anywhere from 600-1000 yards.
I am just looking at getting a base rifle to start. First thing on the list is a muzzle brake, bipod and a limb saver to help off set the almost 9lbs of recoil energy over the .308.
So as much as I have read on here and with your replies to my post maybe I should up my budget a little more and start with a better rifle. I hope this lets you know a little more about me and my intentions. </div></div>
There is plenty of tolerance despite you getting some friendly "poking" from some folks here. Don't take it personally. Also, threads similar to this one that you have started get posted VERY frequently and many times, end up being 14yr old, acne-faced, Mom/Dad's basement-dwelling trolls who all have two thing in common...everything they know is based on some incorrect crap they got off the Internet somewhere and the closest they have ever come to a firearm was playing Call of Duty (or [Insert Name of Game Here]) on their Playstation.
Back to your original questions then. Since you have already decided on the 300WM since you do NOT want a .308 for the reasons you have stated now, the recommendations for a quality, budget-minded rifle like the Remington 700P/PSS/Police or Sendero still hold true. New if you can scratch together a little more cash, or used in excellent shape/low round count if you can't spend more. I'd say a budget for a decent rifle (just the rifle) should be around $900 new give or take and around $750 give or take used.
As for a scope...as I said before...plan to spend at LEAST what you spent on your rifle for a decent scope. There is an incredible offer from SWFA going on right now for $500 off one of their new 5-20x50 SS units which makes them an incredible bargain at $999. That deal is good for the next month. If you absolutely cannot spend that much, I would look at a fixed power option (since you are just punching holes in paper and don't necessarily need a lower power range for shorter range work/observation/etc.). The SWFA SS 10x, 16x and 20x scopes are all excellent and can be had for a relative bargain starting at only $300. Add a decent base and set of rings (Badger Ord., Seekins, etc.) for a budget of around $200 (look in the PX here on the Hide for good deals on all things "accessory" such as scopes, rings/mounts, bipods, etc.).
For 1k shooting and in...just about any commercial match offering on the market will serve you well until you can get your reloading setup up and running. See if you can find a deal on Federal Gold Medal Match 190gr, Black Hills 190gr, as well as the newer offerings from Mike at Southwest Ammo (a Hide sponsor...look around here for more info). Ammo also comes up for good prices in the Px as well.
Barrel threading and a muzzle brake can all be had from any number of different smiths here on the Hide. I'd skip the recoil pad for now as the one that comes on the HS Precision stocks of the 700P and Sendero isn't bad. The brake will do more to assist you with recoil than the buttpad anyway.
Again...keep your eyes on the items that come up for sale here. Also, take a good read through past posts on people looking to build "budget" rifles. They are numerous and include some specifics on 300WM builds. Plenty of good "pointers" and ideas for builds to be found. </div></div>
Thank you for your input. I am going to search for budget builds now to see what I can find. Thanks again
