Building a rifle on a Manners prs1 and I’m looking for barrel help. I’m a newb when it comes to anything long distance but have a goal to get into the sport and even try PRS. I’ve decided to go 6.5cm and have a deviant tactical waiting. I scored a flat top prs1 in scorched earth. I have a Tbac ultra 7 sitting in nfa jail for another few months. I’m leaning towards the heavy or medium Palma but open to suggestions. I would like fluting (mainly for looks) if that makes a difference. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. I appreciate everyone that has helped me so far!

i've gone from marksman to heavy palma to heavy varmint and dont see myself going back for a PRS rig

heavy palma with flutes or MTU with flutes. but there are plenty of people still running medium palmas just fine

Medium palma wasn't heavy enough for me to shoot suppressed and spot hits and misses with in a 6.5 Creed. I personally would go heavier profile or use a good brake. My rifle was only 14-1/2 lbs with the suppressor. I can manage the recoil better with a brake even though it is 3/4 lb lighter without the suppressor. My current match rifle is 18.5 lbs with a brake, 19.5 suppressed. I went 26" Bartlein light varmint in 22BR, so their is no recoil now. I am running an Area 419 Hellfire or a TBAC 30P-1.

My only custom barrel is a factory varmint contour (Savage Varmint, from Lothar-Walther). Aside from some additional length (28" instead of 24" for the .260 Rem), the barrel profile differs little from the Savage Factory contour. By using a standard contour, barrel channel issues become moot.

I like the additional length for several reasons. More velocity becomes available; but for me, that advantage is secondary to being able to make similar velocities with less mayhem in the engine room. IMHO, that length is most valuable as a hedge in favor of longevity; I've been shooting that barrel for 16 years.

Also, I avoid custom chambers. By staying with SAAMI chambers, I can put something off the shelf inside and not worry about issues. As one reaches greater age, it gives some comfort to know that one's not handing down any safety issues to one's descendants. The expected accuracy sacrifice is real, but not such a yawning leap that it bothers me at all.

I think that a well made barrel from a respected producer can often deliver excellent accuracy and repeatability without needing to be super heavy. The extra weight serves intentionally as a heat sink, mainly intended to offset internal stresses. But larger sinks have the overhead of needing more time to equalize temperature with the ambient, and may become inconvenient during a faster paced course of fire.

Contour becomes a hot topic.

For PRS stuff I like medium Palma with 1.5” extra on the shank end for future setback, finish length 26-27”.
I don’t run a can, and don’t see myself doing so in the future. I’m not a fan of adding variables, or the length they add.
If your fundamentals are solid there’s no reason you can’t spot your own hits from a 6.5CM in a fairly stable position with a med Palma.

MTU @ 26” and a good brake is plenty heavy to spot yourself even at short distances. It does make rifle front heavy and needs weight in the rear to balance it (more weight/ even heavier rifle) Manners will place weight to balance the rig but it’s HEAVY. Heavy Palma is about as big as many moving shooters go. An efficient brake will will help a lighter rifle work well for you.
Practice however will make most anything work for you.
Good Luck!
