Mainly wanted to give a big thanks to everyone that gave me advise while I was building my first rifle. I finished it up a couple months ago and finally got to do some hunting with it for the spring black bear here in oregon. Got my second bear and my first kill on the gun. Worked great!

Finally got the viper vortex to go along with it as well.

It scores 19 & 3/4 which will make it into the Oregon records book but missed boone and crocket by 1/4 inch. Weight comes in somewhere from 350 to 400 pounds.

Thanks again for everyones help!

Re: First Kill with the 6.5x284

It is a 6.5x284 28 inch free floating mcgowen fluted heavy sporter barrel, bedded savage long action with the accutrigger with the drop hingeplate and without the barrel nut. It has a .294 neck and .188 freebore. The stock is sporter thumbhole gary microfit. The scope is a 4-16 viper vortex ffp mrad reticle with the sunshade. I did all the chambering and reaming work with the advise from mainly the forum at my college Oregon Tech in my machining class. Haven't got to shoot it very much but the first time out it shot just over a 1 inch group at 100 yards with my first set of loads so it seems to be very promising. I am using the 142gr smk's and the H4831sc.

Great looking bear and very nice looking stick!!!!

The 6.5-284 is such a work horse! You can build a 6.5 that shoots faster but day in and day out the 6.5-284 just gets it done. Again, congrats!

Re: First Kill with the 6.5x284

Great bear and good pics.

I have so many hunting calibers that I really like, but it's my 6.5x284 that comes out the most for hunting North America.

I've been using the 130 grain Swift Sirocco II and Nosler Accubonds for game from pronghorn to big northern states deer.

Congrats.

Re: First Kill with the 6.5x284

Great chambering for a hunting rifle. I just had my first kill with mine last December on my Texas hunt. Shot this whitetail at 603 yards with my 6.5-284 Norma. I used 140 grain Berger Hunting VLD.
