Hello, I've been shooting for over half my life, however, just starting to get into shooting rifles at a distance. I picked up an FN SPR in .308 and now need to get some glass for it. I have ranges in about an hour drive out to 700 yards, but I don't expect to be shooting past 500 anytime soon. I was thinking Leupold MK 4, but it seems that many on this board feel the quality control has slipped to a point of no return. I can't afford a $3000 USO, however, a Nightforce is possible. If I could also get opinions on starting out with something like a USO ST-10, as opposed to a variable power Nighforce that would be great. Thank you in advance.

Here's the progression of scopes in my kit. I have the least time on the B&L so can't say much about its durability, but they have a good reputation.
B&L 3200 Elite 10X mil-dot - $180
Super Sniper 10X rear focus - $300
USO ST-10 fixed objective mil/mil covered #1 knobs/GAP reticle - $1100
USO SN-3 3.2-17 Ergo/EREK/covered #1 mil/mil GAP reticle - $2100
If in doubt get the super sniper for now. It will serve you well and has great resale. If you want to pop for a bit more go for the ST-10. HTH and welcome to the sport.

I come from the above school of thought, i guess my question is: is a fixed power scope as a first quality scope a good idea? Will it help develop good habits, etc?

the way i see it, yes.
i run a mark4 3.5-10, and i find myself taxed to think of a time when it was on anything other than 10x
the way i see it is, starting with a fixed to get the basics and moving to a variable if you start shooting comps and need flexibility.
its a good time to pick allegiance to mil or moa, and stick with it.

Take a run up to Brea and stop in the USO shop and see for yourself. Just give them a call, bunch of good fella's and they can answer all your questions and may even give you a nice deal

savvy a pre-owned vari-3...or a millet they will do everything you will care to have the SPR do....

+1 on a good used scope. A Leupold Mark 4 in the $700-800 price range, or a Night Force around $1000 would be where I would first look.
