First rem 700 Help with a new build.

So I just picked up a rem 700 sps varmint .223 (tupperware stock)
Thinking about doing this stock (hs prec m24)

Any reviews? I plan to "learn" to shoot with this one, can anyone tell me the weight is on one of these stocks? Anyone have pics?

Also thinking about the bushnell 10x40 mill dot (fixed power)

Really new to it all, used to travel and shoot archery competitions- plan to tinker with this and see how it goes. What ammo do you guys reccomend? I may reload someday, but not today

Also what is a good bipod that will rock side to side for easy leveling?

Probably just gonna shoot a few varmints, shoot a little paper and maybe work up to longer distances and eventually a .308.

Also looking at the one peice bases for it, I see some are alum??? Will that work.

Depending on your budget:

-Optic choice is ok.
-Consider upgrading that factory trigger to a Timney or Shilen.
-Check out the Bell & Carlson Stocks. Will save you some money and they are every bit the equal of the HS's. Their A2 stock is very similar to the HS you show. Chek 'em out <span style="color: #3333FF">HERE</span>.
-You are going to be limited by the twist rate (1-12) on your Varmint. 60 grain stuff is gonna be about the heaviest you can go. Take a look at several manufacturers offering in 55 gr Ballistics Tips or V-Max's. Should work well out to 300 yards and beyond (with good wind-reading skills).
-Aluminum bases are fine for what you're doing. TPS, EGW are both decent bases.

Thanks for the quick response! I did consider that stock but if you scroll down it shows them to be sold out for the remington.

I also looked at the bobby hart lrt (which is similar to the bell and carlson in design) But not sure I like the looks. I really like the olive / black web of the b/c and hs.

Will I run in to any problems with not having parallax adj on the bushnell fixed power?

I can't get much more than 350 yard shot anywhere close. I live in a very mountainous region.

Also what is a good cheek rest that I could use on that stock, can it be drilled if needed? It says aramid fiberglass???

You could also check Shooters Discount <span style="color: #3333FF">HERE</span>. They may have some. Check out B&C's A3 stock with the butthook too. You will be fine at 10x without parallax adjustment. As far as cheekrests go, I've always used a stockpack (like Eagle or the like) and just added foam or something else under to adjust height. You get the benefit of having a pack for ammo, etc., on the gun. Don't know about drilling the HS stock, but I have added flushcups to a B&C stock before.

See if you can find a old police model, most had 1:9 barrels. Then you can take 69s and maybe 75 gr pills.

For a bipod, a notch leg swivel Harris would attach to your existing sling stud.

An Atlas bipod would be the cat's meow, but would require a rail. From the spacing of your front sling studs, I would think that you'd be able to remove the sling studs and use the insert (assuming there is one) to attach the rail for the Atlas.

I have one of those stocks, and the barrel channel is huge. They are cut for thicker barrels. Honestly I did'nt like the look of it, (big gap down the sides) and took it off. I ended up using a "P" stock instead cut for the varmint profile barrel. Doing it again I'd go with the B&C M40 stock. They look pretty good. Good luck.

I recently bought a Rem 700 SPS Varmint in .308 for a build project. As I do with any new rifle, I took it to the range and shot it first to learn its capabilities. I installed a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 with a Z-Plex (just a duplex) reticle using 2-piece Leupold STD bases and STD Medium rings.

Using a Harris swivel 9"-13" bipod and a rabbit ears rear bag, I shot 5 3-shot groups at 100 yds that averaged 0.35 inches with the best two being 0.192" and 0.225" (I measure the outsides of the bullet holes with my calipers and subtract the bullet diameter). One of those two groups was with Federal GMM factory ammo with 168gr Sierra Match King bullets and one was with my hand load of 42.0gr of RL-15 and a 168gr SMK bullet.

My conclusion is that the Rem "Tupperware" stock was just fine for the moment and the barrel and action were in pretty good shape. I was going to install an AICS 1.5 as a first mod but I'll wait. I will, however, get a different scope. Now, you might want to try your new rifle before you start throwing money at it...you may find out that it has different needs than you thought.

Just my $0.02 and YMMV.

Yeah, not saying the factory stock doesn't shoot good, I just don't care for it. Thanks again for all of the input. I also just checked out the B&C A5. I really like it, by the time I put an adj cheek weld one of the other stocks it will just about pay off to buy the a5.

Stocky's shows them out of stock... how often do they get something like that back in?

Is the a5 a good choice.
