Hi. Just thought I would introduce my self I have been shooting for a few years now using my fathers rifles and I am a competitive pistol shooter. I just purchased my first rifle. An A-bolt browning with synthetic stock (which I dont really like but there isnt really any option to change it in australia without paying more that what it would cost to get a different rifle) and medium weight varmint barrel, chambered in 223. WSSM. I was going to save and have a 22-250 custom built but this came along almost unfired for very little money. It came with leupold rings and bases and an Olivon 6-24by56 scope that really sucks. Now the questions start. In terms of accuracy is it worth removing the leupold rings and going to a picitiny rail or bridge mount and which would you consider the best for accuracy. Also do you think there would be any gains by welding in a floor plate converting it to single shot as it shouldnt be much work and I wont be using the 2 shot mag anyway.

Re: First Rifle

So I got back from developing some loads. I dont have my dies yet so I had to just use a 223 seating die and only use new brass without sizing it and just take a gues at how far in to seat it. suprisingly It shoots a lot better than I thought. at half a grain under sujested maximum load I shot 2 5 shot groups at 3/8th of an inch, using 52 grain match kings. It might even get a bit better when I get my dies and do some loads in thenths of a grain. I would think thats pritty good for a rifle straight out of the box. the scope on the other had, although it is accurate when I wind the elevation or windage knobs the shots just go anywhere. if I wind it 2 inches to the left it might go 4 inches, or not move at all, or move up instead of accross.
