This popped up at my local gun shop. I'm pretty sure it was one of the CDNN Inv rifles sold awhile ago. Comes in a black hogue stock and is unfired. I'm only familiar with Rem 700's and Steyr's, so if you can let me know how this stacks up to Remington PSS rifles or similar, I'd appreciate it. Price is $600.

I have the FN patrol xp od green stock 18" flutted. Same ragged hole. Shot one the other day and could not tell were one hole began and the next started looked like one hole. It is based off the old winchester action.

Between my friends and I we have 16 FN PBRs both 20" and 24" they all shoot like you would expect a rifle costing many times there price.

I have a PSS in .308 and a FN SPR in .308. Both are great rifles, but the PSS will be the one to go when it's time for the next build.

HK TackDriver,

If the PBR you are looking at has "FNH USA, Fredericksburg, VA" engraved on the left rear of the receiver, it was from CDNN. If not, it is possibly original. If it is a pre-64 claw extractor and a black stock, it is likely from CDNN. A check of the receiver for the additional engraving will be the most definative marking. If it is a controlled-round push-feed and a black stock, it is likely it is an original standard PBR. Only the PBR-XP came with the claw extractor and only came with OD stocks. Standard PBRs came with black stocks and the sliding plate extractor. Either way, it is a good deal.

Hope this sheds some light.

When CDNN had the barreled actions you could order either stock you wanted, green or black. Just look for the claw extractor. I have one of the claw extractor actions and it is marked SPR Fredricksburg, VA. It's on GB now.

Action Guy is correct about the Black/Green stock thing before they went to CDNN
My first(bought right after they came out) one is marked PBR-XP and came in the Green Hogue and is a fine shooting rifle.

Re: FN Patrol 308 fluted, Hogue Stock - Accurate?

Thanks for the heads up guys. It's definitely a CDNN rifle, he told me as much right away. I just threw down $600 on a scope, so I'm going to build up some cash for the FN as a "lightweight" bolt gun. My current 308 precision rifle is ungodly heavy, so the FN with my Loopy 3.5-10x40m3 will fit the FN perfectly for a lighter weight package.

Last question - do you guys have any problems with the Hogue stock or will I have to eventually upgrade?

Re: FN Patrol 308 fluted, Hogue Stock - Accurate?

The green stock has the full length aluminum beding block and mine shot under MOA after I bedded it. I just did not like the rubber feel.
I bought a used HS. After I bedded it I think it shoots just a little bit better in the HS stock.

Re: FN Patrol 308 fluted, Hogue Stock - Accurate?

The Hogue is a good, light-weight stock. Keep your scope as low as possible because the design of the cheekpiece is more of a hunting-style stock. If you are shooting prone, a good cheekpiece is recommended, like the Eagle stock pack, to raise the comb a little to make prone shooting more comfortable and stable. I run Eagle Stock packs on all of my TSRs (PBR descendent, same stock) and it helps remarkably. Bedding the Hogue stock does help accuracy. Don't throw it away, give it a shot and see how it works for your needs for this lighter rifle.

I'll be the one to offer the opposing view.

I ordered a new barrel for my FN PBR-XP after the original failed in accuracy.

I originally bought the FN PBR-XP off of Gunbroker. Unbeknown-st to me: The seller has a habit of just listing guns, then ordering them from the wholesaler once he gets the winning bidders money in hand. Pretty good business model in that it allows him to drop ship from the wholesaler, and he carries no inventory cost/risk.

The down side is it took forever to get the gun, and the gun was in less than perfect shape. The gun had a nice scratch on the barrel with a nice patch of rust. I suspect the bore was not in the best of shape either as when I shot it with a pretty good sample of commercial ammo it shot like ass.

Given the hassles of dealing with the guy I just ate it and figured it would be a project gun. I had the gun restocked and bedded in a Manners T5-A stock (great stock), installed the Riflebasix trigger and ordered the new barrel same contour as my SPR build only 26" finished length and in 308WIN.

Once my barrel comes in for my 260 REM SPR build, I'll send them both off to Mark at Short Barreled Customs to have trued and built up, broken in, then disassembled for Melonite Case Hardening then Ion Bond coated in Flat Dark Earth and finally re-assembled...

Thats a good price on a great rifle. I like mine a lot and it is pretty accurate for what I paid. If you dont like the stock you can sell it and get something that fit you. Also look on the McMillan specials page as they sometimes have some nice tactical stocks for the Model 70 at a good price.

I took my new 20" TSR XP (replacement for PBR) and was able to get it to group a bit under MOA at 100yds w/ 175 GMM using my NF 3.5-15X50 when I did my part with the Hogue. I am just learning bolts so I believe a better driver could have steered the rifle more consistently than I am currently capable. I am also experimenting with ammo to see what it likes best. Seemed to like the GMM much more than the 150 Superformance.

As far as the Hogue in general... I think it will definitely need to be upgraded if you are going to spend a lot of time behind the rifle as the cheek weld is less than ideal. I am currently looking to upgrade but haven't settled on which one yet. Leaning towards a Manners or McMillian A5 or A3 adjustable.

There are far more dialed in bolt shooters on here than I am, they will be able to give you better details if I have left anything out.
