Hi guys,

I'm new to Sniper's hide and was hoping you guys could help me narrow down some scope choices. First, a brief background on me, I live in Oregon, got a wife and 2 kids + a dog. I mostly bow hunt but I've been getting more into shooting lately and am going to opt for rifle tags this year. I primarily hunt deer and elk and won't be taking a shot further than 400 yards, at an animal anyway. That said, I would like to be able to reach 600 yards confidently at the range. I'm in the market for a new scope to put on my Tikka T3 Lite SS in .308. The scopes that have been catching my eye are:
  • Swaro Z3 4 x 12 x 50
  • Steiner GS3 - 4 x 20 x 50
  • Steiner GS3 - 2 x 10 x 42
  • Meopta MeoPro - 3.5 x 10 x 44
Right now, I'm leaning toward the Steiner 2x10x42, however I would really prefer a large objective lens, which is why the 50s have been catching my eye. I also wasn't sure that 10x would be enough at the 400-600 range. Seems like it would be perfect for 500 yards and under, but maybe a little under powered at 500+ yards (which I won't shoot much, but it's nice to have the option).

The Meopta also seems like it would be a solid choice and it's the most affordable.

The other Steiner, seems pretty perfect, although it's quite heavy compared to the others, which is the only flaw I'm seeing. It's also the second most expensive.

The Swaro is the most expensive but I'm the buy once, cry once type of guy so I don't mind biting the bullet if the quality is noticeably better.

I'd love to hear your recommendations.

Thanks for your help! Looking forward to being part of the SH community.

WELCOME TO SH: If you have a well stocked Gunshop or a Cabelas or Sportsmans Warehouse near you that has those scopes in stock. An employee can go outside with you so you can look through each individually mounted to their scope stock( a blank wood rifle stock with a rubber scope block that holds a scope). For the scope: Checking the edge to edge clarity L-R (9:00 -3:00).ie: not bending on a straight edge of a building (no curves) with the reticle that you like. Use the full magnification range and seek out random targets out to your desired range up to and including your 400 - 600 yards. to see how much detail of the target you can. Also, making sure your scope reticle, windage and elevation knobs match meaning MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA not a mix of the two. Whatever scope is the most clear to you, provides you with more than enough target clarity. Has the reticle you like (not busy to obscure your target) and the price is right for you. Its what you should go with. It's what I do when choosing a scope.
