Okay, it's not a great platform but I know someone here can point me in the right direction. :)

Details:
Receiver: Federal Ordnance (Early – Ser. 69XX) USGI M14 Parts, most TRW
Mount: Sadlak Aluminum 2007 – scope work by Heart Mountain precision out of Wyoming
Rings: TPS 30mm Low (.925”) 7075 Alloy
Scope: 30mm Falcon Optics Menace 4-14x44mmFFP
Ammo: American Tactical 147gr FMJ

Problem: At 145yds/133m the impact point is 9 3/4” low. I can no longer make adjustments as the scope has reached the end of its limit (only +2.05, I can still rotate the cam +3.05 but there is no change in the point of aim)

The scope has also reached full deflection to the left. I had a gusty wind from 2 o’clock 8-15mph.

So guys, where do I go from here? Do I need new rings to compensate for elevation? What about the windage? When I look down onto the rifle from above the forward bell of the scope appears to be somewhat left of center.

remove scope and optically zero the scope with a couple of "V" blocks you can make them out of wood or anything laying around the house. Then still on "V" blocks check for correct tracking agianst a yardstick at 100 yards. If its bad you will find out right away. This check will tell you if you have a bad scope or you mount, or mounting is the failure.

I have a similar set up on my M1A super match. Did you manually center your scope before you mounted it? What's the moa on your scope ie elev.?

I didn't manually center first, forgive me, but how is this accomplished?

Just did a google search for optically-centering instructions. Should be set, will try in the am.

Windage and Elevation:
MOA Models
1/4MOA per click. 15MOA per turret revolution.
Total elevation adjustment = 75MOA

I have the MRAD model:
0.1 MRAD Models
0.1MRAD per click. 60 clicks per turret revolution.
Total elevation = 22.00MRAD

Re: Frustrated: Using glass, not on target, out of adj

There may not be anything wrong with the scope or the mount, it could very well be the grooves on the side of the receiver the mount dovertails into could very well be off.

One option is the use of Burris rings with Phonelic inserts to compensate for elevation and windage. Yhey may not be tacticool, but functional and troublefree.

Re: Frustrated: Using glass, not on target, out of adj

I have remounted everything and will be heading out to see if there are any changes.

I spent a little time trying to find the correct Burris rings, with very little luck. I can do without the tacticool, looking for function, this isn't a wall hanger after all.

On a side note... My other toy is a AN/TPS-75.

sub....not so great a platform ....the whole lash-up up screams for the srcap pile.......junk this crap and move on to something you can hit with.....just how much brain damage are you willing to go through to get to what end????

seriously...its one wear point chasing another...the next can of worms will be how to load and get match grade ammo for something that won't produce match grade anything based upon a system that uncle maynard had just after korea as a infantry rifle....

and so you lash-up all these parts and expect what....precision ???

seriously ?

Re: Frustrated: Using glass, not on target, out of adj

Not really expecting precision, but tagging man sized targets out to 500-600m is exciting for me at this point. After my first 15rds ever fired from a .308/M1A, I had a 5 shot 2.5" group at 100m.

Back from the range, same issues and no change.

Another very annoying occurrence is when I adjust the windage left the elevation will decrease. This happens near the end of the adjustment.

The closest I can get to sighting in my rig is right and low 5”. When I adjust the windage, centered on the target, the elevation error is 12.5” low. When I adjust the elevation, centered on the target, the windage error is 11” right.
My groups at 100m were 3” today.

I jump between metric/imperial a lot.

I think I better look into rings... or bolt gun.

Went ahead and ordered the Burris Zee Signature 30mm Rifle Scope Mount Rings. If this will not correct the issue I'll scrap the program.

Sub,

After reviewing your last range report and the inconsistancies with your scope adjustment these are my thoughts:

1. Something is loose in your mount or rings. I torque my mount at 65 in/lb and my rings at 20-25 in/lb after every 100 rds.

2. I'm not familiar with your scope and the max MOA travel. To center your scope do the following: Turn either the elevation or windage dial until it stops. Now turn it back the other direction counting the clicks until it stops. Now turn it back half way and you're centered. Keep the numbers.

3. Internal malfunction of your scope?

4. If you can use extra low rings to bring your scope as far down as possible to the bore.

5. Sadlak offer a fitting service for that mount and checking your receiver. 45.00 for piece of mind.

6. Here's the biggie. Is your rifle bedded? If not then unless you have an extrmely well fitting stock, everything moves with every shot. Is that an old M14 stock on it? If you're serious use a fiberglass Mcmillan or glass and pillar bed it.

7. Use match ammo like HSM when diagnosing or even shooting.

8. It can be done with some cash, detail and patience. Like Boltripper said a bolt gun will be the pinnacle, but it's nice to have an accurate semi also. Like I said either loose mounts or bedding can cause you to be all over the place.

9. I use a marine camo supermatch with ARMS mount, TPS extra low rings, Leupold MKIV 3.5-10x40 TMR, 168 and 175 gr HPBT 800-1k without any issues.

Yours is a nice looking rig. Good luck!

Re: Frustrated: Using glass, not on target, out of adj

I want you to try an experiment. It may do nothing, but is easy and cheap to try.

Remove scope from rings.
Reverse rings on Picatinny rail.
Reinstall scope.
