Rifle Scopes ftr build starting with a scope. why did you pick your particular scope.

hi all. newbie. 2nd post after intro. im starting my ftr build from the scope. mainly because there are so many different aspects involved. so maybe here i can get people to quickly say which scope they picked and why for ftr that would be great. im getting all muddled up with how much zoom you need for 1000yd, reticle type, moa versus mil versus mrad versus plain cross hair, 1/4 adjustment v 1/8, first focal v 2nd focal, mmmm have i missed anything? im sure you all know what i mean. bit i also wanna know why you chose your particular scope. and just a quick run down, i like the sound of savage and sightron to do my build. if im doing anything wrong here let me know. cheers, cant wait to participate! hay that rhymes! sorry its midnight saturday here n i like straight whiskey

Hey there. A couple questions before I can give a good answer. What is your price range for your optic? What cartridge are you leaning toward?

Mil and mrad are two ways of saying the same thing. They are both short for milliradian.

hi light! cheers re mrad. clears that up price range is around $1000 usd. i dont need the best but i dont want to need to get a better one in a years time if i get right into the sport. im never going to be hardcore, more just for enjoyment on the range. i like the sightrons. cartridge i figured .308. seems better for getting upto 1000yd? cheers for your reply. so far im thinking moa-moa 1/8th. but theres so much involved! cheers

Well for your price range you cant go wrong with a sightron. On the swfa sample list they have a sightron s3 8-32x56 with the lrmoa reticle. Believe it was $750 and is moa/moa with 1/8" clicks. This would be a great scope for casual ftr shooting. They do have really good glass in the. Another that fits your bill but may be $200ish above your limit is the new leupy vx6 4-24 with tmoa reticle. That one has a 34mm tube and plenty of adjustment just like the sightron would.

If you want more features the vortex viper pst sfp 6-24 can be had for under $700. The glass isnt quite with the other two mentioned but real close. It does have alot more bells and whistles like zero stop, illum, moa or mil reticles with matching turrets. It would also be plenty for shooting out to 1000yds or more.

I just bought a bushnell hdmr and love the thing. I think liberty optics is selling them for $1129 right now which to me is a steal. You would need to decide if you want ffp or sfp reticle as the bushy is ffp. The vortex can be had in ffp and still stay under $1000. If it were me and only intended use was known distance shooting id go with a 2nd focal plane and spend the cash you save on a good bipod or reloading components.

Curious as to what cartridge s you are leaning toward with this one.

ah very cool il check thos out. the vortex looks interesting n id like to see the bushnell. but something you mentioned was ffp v sfp which is something iv had trouble with. but your saying if im only doing fclass at 600 and 1000 and what ever other ranges they do then i dont need ffp? from what iv read you need ffp so the reticle zooms so its more accurate for adjustment?

and sib im starting with the scope mainly because im guessing the club im joining will try convince me to start with a cheaper rifle which is fine but i may as well getva scope i wont have to change just because il be changing rifle. i like the savage 12 ftr but im sure il be told to get a 2nd hand rem or something. wrong way around domyou think?

Well its true sfp scopes do shift point of impact with power changes you shouldn't be changing your nagnification during a string if you can help it. The main advantage of ffp is the subtensions (distance between the hashes) stays the same no matter what the power setting is. Where sfp stays the same size and is only calibrated for one power setting although can be used at different power settings with a little simple math. The only issue I see with an ffp for ftr is that some ffp scopes the reticle gets pretty thick on max power to shoot tiny groups like is the goal in these shooting disciplines.

The nice part of an ffp is that no matter what power your on your wind holds or hold overs wont change.

Always good to see a newbie starting out. Dont be discouraged by people giving you sarcastic answers or talking down because you dont ask the right question. Keep asking and learn as much as you can. Not sure why people even take the time to reply just to be an asshole to somebody who is trying to learn. Feel free to pm me and talk scopes or maybe rifles to go with your new scope.

Light, I'm not sure this is correct. An SFP scope does NOT change POI (or shouldn't) if you change the scope power. Now if you're talking about using the reticle for holdovers and windage, then yes, the POI will change if you use the same 2 mil Dot on 10x and then on 25x. But if you hold the center cross on the same spot on the target, the bullet should go to the same place whether on 5x or 25x. I think I understood what you were trying to say, it was just confusingly worded.

cool mate, im thinking 2nd focal plane is the way to go for ftr. im thinking plain crosshair too. ah who knows!

Dont know if you ever check out accurate shooter but a guy is selling an 8-32 sightron with crosshair dot reticle for $650 I believe. That would serve you well. Good luck! Pm anytime. Im no expert but can add my opinions and experiences anytime.

i think i get what your both saying. basicaly (which is the way o need it) 2nd focal plane at 300 the 1 dash for some windage wont be 1 dash at 1000 wheres as if you used 1st focal it would because its zoomed! i think

Lol I just noticed the nagification remark was from my post. You saw it here if they start that show I get royalties.

The only way to change a wifes nagification setting is called xanax lol.

Oh and im sure we all know I meant magnification. My sausage fingers dont work with a phone keyboard.

My wording was bad on that one. The values of each has will change with the power setting. I have had a couple scopes where the poi shifted slightly when I changed power. This shouldnt happen though.

The xanax solution is an ingenious one; if you can't get the wife to take the xanax and thus lower her nagification setting, you can take the xanax and it acts as good hearing protection acts on the firing line. She's nagging, but after you ingest a proper dose of xanax, you could give a phuck less what's coming out of her mouth.

Correct on both. The mil dots or hashes for measuring or holdover will change as the zoom changes. But the center crosshair should be the same no matter what setting you have it on. If it changes, you have a bad scope.

And I'm so totally going to steal "nagnification". I wonder how long I would have lived if I had ever said: "hey honey, could you dial your nagnification down a little bit?"

mark the kiwi, for my dedicated FTR rifle, I am using a NXS 12-42x56 NPR1 reticle, it works for me, (I like the reticle) changed the elevation turret out to 1/8moa, I think it something to think about for making that adjustment at 1000. Nightforce came out with the new Competition series, then made changes based on input from the F class shooters using it, pretty awesome. Sightron series 3 is excellent value for money, if you looking at shooting 1000 primarily, magnification does help.

wow you can actually change a single turret from 1/4 to a 1/8? Is that only nf scopes?is a cool looking reticle. Iv checked out the nf competition scopes. If i ever get to that level of comp then id go for one of them for sure

cheers mate. Thinking the same but its nice to have someone say the same. Whats your scope? The mags still confusing. Some say get as big as you can n others say theres no point cus you they dont ever get to full mag n usually no where near it! Ha fun n games. Im getting closer tho. Still a long way from reticle choice. I still think plain thing crosshair but not many others seem to. Might be different if i was changing distance all the time but ftr is a set few distances that with practice i should know my moa adjustments to each distance and i should learn how much to hold on the horizontal to counter wind, assuming i dont adjust the scope for wind which most people say not to do.

I dont shoot F class, if i did i'd shoot F open rather than FTR, at least you run what you want. Best bet is to go along to your local F class shoot and see what the guys there are using scope wise.

Yeah thats the plan. Im writing up a list and gonna go around the group n find out what they have and what the might be willing to sell. Id still buy a new scope but the rest doesnt matter n maybe new gun by the end of the year to go with the scope. Unfortunitly last weekend was called off as it was too hot. Laid out in the sun when its over 40c is not my idea of a good time either ) especially since the snakes love those conditions!)
