The junior guy isn’t obliged to salute an officer in or on a vehicle, or on a bike or motorcycle unless that senior officer is flying a flag with rank in it.

When I was enlisted, we didn’t have those (actually we didn’t even have cell phones, they weren’t invented yet), but I would have just said hi, or waived.

It's a pilot. Did you expect him to walk?

I have a little experience with the AF. It was a joke.

My first batt commander had us saluting in the field. He was 6'4" and wearing a ring with the 7.62 bullet that they dug out of his back from VN. He was a great leader but you wouldn't want to piss him off. As far as the af goes. Most of the jokes fit when I was in the army but and it's a big one. The reason I went in the service was because my uncle Bill (not blood but we called him that) was a Para rescue in Viet Nam. He did 5 tours there and I was enamored with what he had done and the way he carried himself. Low key and matter of fact in everything I saw him do.
