I recently purchased a 6mm Creedmoor GAP-10 upper that was originally Cerakoted FDE by GAP. Is it possible to remove the FDE cerakote from the upper & hand guard without damaging the original black anodize below? I've got 3 other GAP-10's and I want it to match its brethren...

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!!

Edit: I'm not opposed to the idea of having it stripped and re-anodized just as long as the process used to remove the cerakote doesn't cause micro-pitting, etc... I want it to be exactly like my others!!! I'd even PAY to trade the FDE upper & hand guard (no barrel) for one that is the regular anodized black!!!

The short answer is No.

Since Cerakote is highly chemical resistant, the only way to effectivle remove it is by media blasting (aluminum oxide), which would damage the unerlying anodizing, no way around it. Your best option would be the trade, as even anodizing varies from procesor to processor and once its blasted down to the bare aluminum and then re-anodized your not likely to have an exact match with your others.

Im a bit confused. Are your other rifles just ano'd black? If that is the case get someone who does good anno work and have it stripped down and re done. If your other guns are cerakoted why not just strip the gun down and recoat?

As the prep for Cerakote is to media blast with 100/120 grit it stands to reason that it is no longer anodized under the Cerakote anyway. If you want it re anodized then Bead blast it to remove the Cerakote but as has been stated, the color will not match perfectly as they may not have the same die or the strength of the die bath may be different etc.
