I shipped GA Precision my M40A3 for a M40A5 upgrade and to cut the barrel down to 20 inches. In less than two weeks I received a call from Tracy saying it ready to ship back. As always top quality work from a top quality crew. Now to get that range report................

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

The "A5" doesn't refer to the stock. It refers to the 5th in the series of USMC M40 rifles. The difference between an A3 and an A5 is the barrel length, suppressor mount, and I believe the NV mount.

Also, the stock on the rifles is a McMillan A4

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Onemoretime,

Why did you go with the Badger EFR instead of the PGW night vision mount?

Awesome rifle! Are you going to suppress it as well?

Congrats, Wally

George is out of the PGW and they havent gave any lead time on the next batch. Per George the USMC has also used the Badger EFR for that same reason

Thats my plan if I can get the CLO sign off.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Of the rifles I've seen with the Surefire muzzle break, I know it has to be machined to fit. But why do the smiths leave bare metal and not refinish it? I'm talking about where the break meets the barrel and the suppressors attach to the break.

Cut

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Because it costs money. The rifle may have been finished prior the change to a 20 in barrel and or the addition of a brake. To GAP's credit they don't damage the prior finish; so there really is no reason to refinish. Frankly I have no idea how they manage to keep that finish untouched; pretty remarkable!

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Nice rig you got there Spooledup, have you decided which UNS you will use. I plan on putting the same Badger EFR mount on my M40A3, will have to start saving for the UNS, not a cheap unit.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Very nice!!!. I was going to do the same, but after seeing your's it's a done deal. Can I ask what the conversion cost? When you get a chance I would be interested in your range report vs. your prev. 25" barrel data. If you go NV device, try to get better than the 22 on the PVS units. That is hot! Jeff

Barrel is stainless, no worries about corrosion with no refinish. I wouldn't spend $200+ to refinish it either. If I had to have it black, I would either break out the krylon or a black sharpee.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

I have 2 rifles that I'm wanting to get a suppressor for. One is a AI AWSM and the other is a M40a4 in .300WM. I am leaning towards the Surefire and using their breaks and using the same suppressor for both rifles.

The cost of refinishing a barreled action is expensive for the small amount of bare steel left. Just making sure it wasn't a clearance issue with mounting the suppressor.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Awesome gun.

Just one question why couldn't they install the surefire brake like Surgeon does on their rifles? They seem to have a step down on the barrel so you don't have that huge gap.

Nice rifle though

If im correct that "crusty paint" is because it is a return stock, I wouldnt strip off the paint that a marine used in Irag to pop some camel riders, thats just my opinion though, it has a sentimental value to it and is a difficult find, if you want a OD one order one from McMillan

I concur, leave it as is.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Where do you get those return stocks? I have seen the older HTGs. But where do you pick up a A-4 Return stock? I am sure they come from Mcmillan. But how do you go about getting one?

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

You are correct it,s a return stock. George had 12 of them and sold 11 as complete M40A3's. I liked the way the M40A5 was setup so I sent the A3 in for the update.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Thanks. I have seen them on here before. Wanted to purchase one. But didnt know how to get one. That answers my question. Thanks. Nice rifle by the way love those return stocks.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

I'm thinking about a new GAP M40A5 build and prefer the PGW mount. I just e-mailed Ross at PGW to ask about obtaining their mount for a GAP build. Otherwise, I think I would go with only the SF brake.

Spooledup, how much difference is there with the SF brake versus no brake and a longer barrel?

When I emailed him to ask the same thing he quoted me 250 usd shipped to your door in the white. I'm thinking about getting the same thing done to my Eric Reid built gun.

Where did this even happen? I don't see any mention of an A2 anywhere in this thread.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

My M40A3 is a pretty heavy rifle. I haven't weighed it, but I suspect it weighs about 18 pounds. My other rifles seem lightweight by comparison! While I've shot only 80 rounds in the few weeks I've owned it, there seems to be little problem with recoil. The purpose of the brake on the A5 might be to recover the sight picture more quickly, I dunno. I hope Spooledup will give us the scoop.

I want to leave that rifle as a stock M40A3.

I think that is the SF can that is correct.

Ive contacted Ross as well , I have 20 on order but may never get them as PGW aparently doesnt plan on making them again unless the USMC orders more, Keeping my fingers crossed. Badger has sold quite a few of their mounts to the USMC so it may actully become the correct mount officially at some point.

Re: GAP M40A5 20'' Upgrade

Guys, not sure who posted it on SH, but I heard that PGW is doing a run of the mounts mid Jan... apparently... Last time I spoke with them (PGW on Nov), they were waiting on a USMC order to come through...
