Gear Question about Savage 110BA .338LM...

I sent my Savage 110BA .338LM back to Savage for repair on a wonky mag release tab and ill-fitting magazines. The rifle was returned to me with the repairs made, a spare magazine, as well as a full top rail section (full monolithic top rail) freshly wrapped in factory paper and never mounted. There was no explanation as to why this was in the box with the rifle. I never mentioned having any problems with the top rail and the rail that was on the rifle was the original because the nick I put in it when I bumped it on the tailgate was still there.

1. Why did I get a new rail?
2. Why such scant gunsmith notes from the repair?
3. What do you think the rail may be worth on the forums?

It appears that it will bolt right onto the new 110 FCP HS Precision.

Because it was dented, the repairs were prob just a fit issue and $10. I'll pm you my address.

Sounds like good service to me.

I would just call it good CS and call it a day!! Who really cares why that rail came with it...just free stuff for you lol. Not sure what the rail is worth. A lot of guys take them off. I just ordered the FCP version and I'm just going with the 20MOA base that's on it. Unless somebody iss going to use NV it wouldn't be of too much use to anybody but I'd see what you can do, you never know. I'd just ask $150 or best offer. Figure a standard base is at least $80-90 for 20 MOA built in so just throw out a price and accept offers. Better start getting your post count up thought

Re: Gear Question about Savage 110BA .338LM...

Today at the range my 110BA started spraying shots all over the paper after some really good groupings. Jostled the scope and the NF unimount was solid, but the rail was way loose. Maybe Savage is refitting with simpler rails to take some of the stress off the mounts? I'd be curious to see if the BAs shipping from Savage in the coming months include both in the box. I'm lucky this happened while doing a load development at 100 yards and not at 500 where an errant shot may have cleared a berm. If it comes loose again I'm switching to simpler rail.

Re: Gear Question about Savage 110BA .338LM...

I'm guessing the retailer or the shop I had it shipped to mounted the rail, but I didn't know until later that the rail doesn't come pre-installed from Savage. I'm guessing it was the shop I picked it up from as they mounted my bipod backwards and didn't use a torque driver when they were mounting my scope. I'm either going to pull it off and re-install it myself or, if it looks like it could be bedded better, I'll bring it to my smith for a proper job.

I don't think you'll be interested in the load I'm using. I'm guessing no other BA owners on these forums are using 168gr MatchKings.

No I don't think so, how did you come upon using 168s??

Re: Gear Question about Savage 110BA .338LM...

Under 600-800 yards the 168gr and 175gr offer the best performance, but beyond 800 yards the 190gr stabilize better and get more consistent groupings.

Remember that not all 110BAs are .338LM
