If the Government really wanted to do something to help citizens protect themselves they should do the following:

Teach Gun safety in school
Massive campaigns for free gun safety training
Massive campaign on why you should own an AR and a handgun to protect yourself from the crazys
Free how to defend yourself in a gun battle training
Etc. etc etc

Not that I support any kind of free government programs but hey that’s a fact of life now a days so we might as well have some free gun safety and defensive shooting programs

How many fought a Civil War over it loosing 650,000 citizens? In 1860 there were only about 32,000,000 people in the United States.

That's almost as many as in all wars since. Not to mention that by WWI there were 100,000,000 people by WWI, and 140,000,000 by WWII just to put in perspective of how massive was the death in the Civil War. It's on a scale you can't even imagine.

Besides, I’m sure they have warehouses full of surplus rifles in storage, why not have some kind of program where the citizens can get free 5 step program:

Firearms safety training in school
Proper firearms handling, storage and maintenance in school
Advanced adult firearms safety training
Practical defensive firearms training
Advanced civilian combat training.

Complete them all and get a gov issued rifle and handgun. Hell throw in a can of ammo!

Now that would help Americans protect themselves!

I like your post...BUT.....it goes way back before NAFTA. The early 1900's were not favorable to the republic but even before that was the civil war. The Fed gained way too much power/authority at the end of the Civil War. (I usually respond to anyone that claims that the North won the war with....The Republic lost way more than either side).
Probably the second biggest nail was the "Great Society" passed by Congress and then signed by Johnson.
