So I checked my bank balance because my pay check should be deposited any minute and I see a negative balance. Looking at the pending transactions I see three purchases I didn't make.

1: LaCasa Del Masajist Madrid ES $50.09
2: Music Piano Vitoria ES $414.30
3: Music Piano Vitoria ES $414.30

WTF? How did that happen? I called my banks CS not sure I'd get anyone at 00:55 but surprisingly I did get a human. I have to go to the branch tomorrow and fill out a fraudulent transaction report. He said it shouldn't be a problem getting the account refunded.......

Freaking out a bit. Anyone been in a similar situation?

Update tomorrow...later

Yes, just last week my wife told me that our Discover card had been comprised and someone had used it for thousands of dollars of purchases. She called Discover and had them cancel the card and they did not charge the account because she called it in within 24 hours of noticing the fraud. It happens more and more since we all do online shopping and banking.

Scary. </div></div>

+1, you are absolutely correct. The good thing is, you will get your money back. The bad thing is, the suspect's chances of getting caught are slim to none. If all of your credit/debit cards are accounted for, then you should change ALL of your financial and personal, online passwords. The bank should provide you with information on the source of the transaction so that should narrow it down. Sorry that you have to go through this.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Yup you will have no problem getting your money back, it may take a lttle while, but the bank will refund your money. Change your account and card #'s all that and you will be good to go. My brother in law just last week had 1600 taken out of his accounts, someone was buying a bunch of wal-mart giftcards in Texas and eating at expensive steakhouses down there, funny how he lives up here in Ct and has never been to Texas, but he got his money back pretty quick. With all the transactions going through electronically all over the place its just too easy for people to get your info and use it.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I get credit cards compromised every year. The last thief-kid ordered world of warcraft. They could have tracked him down but they didn't even bother. I figure the numbers were stolen at a restaurant. I have also had charges in Europe so that number must have been snatched in cyber space. The big pain is I have to change account number every time, so I have to re-do the auto charges like gym membership...

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Female friend of mine had her card jacked for some crap from France. Mine was used to attempt a purchase of servers in florida but in my case the company held up the purchase and called me.

Does seem to be the new highway robbery twist.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Was the purchase at a local music store, just curious when you go to the bank to find out. If so pay a visit to the store that sold those items without proper id. If it was online, call the store that sold the items and ask for "your" shipping address.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Just got home from the bank, they said the money should be credited in 48hrs. There were actually three more charges but they were denied. Seems like it is going to be pretty painless to get straightened out, just a minor inconvenience.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Life Lock. It's a pain in the ass if you go to get credit, but at least you know it's working. I have always been called by the bank and told someone was trying to use my account. They send a new card to me and that's it. I have never had to worry about recurring charges such as gym memberships because the credit card company takes care of that for me. BTW, Life Lock cost me and my family member $270 a year. In other words I pay to be insured on my credit.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Not to go off topic but has anyone seen if the hijack of the PS network has caused compromised cards? To the OP, I have had a few cards taken but I have never had a bad experience in recouping the loses. Seems that as long as you are not grossly negligent in the monitoring of your account and take rather immediate action you won't hit too many speed bumps in getting back your money. Glad to hear it worked out for you.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Pull your credit hisotry and make sure that the credit / debit card was the only thing that has been used. If you need some help PM me.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Friend of mine had his bank account cleaned out about a year ago. Used debit card at a eating establishment Spoke to someone who worked at a bank and they gave him this advice. Never use a debit card at resturant unless you keep it in sight. Too easy to photograph the card with cell phone etc. Mexican places are supposed to be the worst (don't ask me why, just was what the person told my friend). So I use my debit for eating out but I don't let the waiter or waitress take it away, if they do I use my credit card.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

We had some fraudulent charges a couple of years ago on a debit card. A friend recommended opening a second account and using the debit card from that account and not the primary one. We simply transfer money over to cover the charges we are planning on making. We can do it from ourt phones in a matter of a couple minutes so it really isn't a big deal. We have not had any problems since because there is typically not much money in there and when we transfer it we spend it.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Yea, about 6 months ago I got robbed for about the same amount. The cool thing was the bank actually called me and told me about it, and stopped a couple further transactions. The little nerd that stole my debit card info used it to buy memberships at like 3-4 different dating sites and then had a full weeks worth of "The Biggest Loser" meal plan sent to MY HOUSE, lol. Funny beings I'm about 155 pounds soaking wet.

Oh well, it was still a giant pain in the ass. I had to go over to the bank and fill out a form stating I didn't spend 800 bucks on dating sites and diet food. Then they had to cancel my old debit card and send me a new one in the mail (which took like a week). Then I had to wait for them to finish some sort of investigation before I got my money back.

All in all, it was a smooth process, and I really like how my bank caught it before I did, but like I said, just a hassle I shouldn't have had to deal with.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

The company I work for got hit for $120k by a hacker. Luckily the bank caught it before it was transferred out of the country.

Things are done a little differently now.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Happened to me with my visa card (not debit). Got a call from the card company asking me if I had just bought train tickets in Paris. Nope. They shut down the card and reissued with new numbers.

The ultimate downside is now my card gets denied/turned off a couple times each year. Usually when I buy a few songs on itunes or something lame it fails and I have to spend 5 minutes on the phone getting it turned back on.

Got locked two weeks ago over a $2400 purchase at a gun store... but that one was all mine.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I've had it happen twice to me in the past year.

First time was with a Government Travel Card, those that are issued the card will know how closely those things are monitored. I got a call saying that there was a couple of transaction at Ikea. If you've been to Minot, you will know that Ikea doesn't exist here, if even in the state for all I know. It was as simple as that, they closed my account right away and sent me a replacement hassle free.

Second time was with my debit card. I had a weird $14 charge show up on my statement, I called the bank and told them that it was not a purchase I had made, since it was at a weird location. They closed that card and refunded me the amount immediately and sent me a new card with no hassle.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Dang!

My Bank cancelled my debit card right away after a $.05 transaction was charged...
I was pissed at first, but then they explained that it was probably a "fishing" charge, used by card thieves... to see if the card number was legit or not!

I love my Credit Union!

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

It's all been squared away on my end. Funds are credited back to my acct this morning.

Thanks all!

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Yep same thing happened to me back in 1997, went to a gun show in Portland Oregon, pulled 400 bucks out of an ATM, went and bought a rifle. This was a Friday afternoon, there was about 2,000$ in checking at this moment, I had no bills at the time and was engaged to my wife at that time.

Monday evening we went to watch a movie, I go to pull 100 bucks out for the week and movie etc... Negative 380 dollars?!

This guy had gotten a hold of my debit card numbers, had a fake card, spent 54 dollars in Burger King, didn't even know that was possible. Flowers, candy, all sorts of stuff.

Now remember this is 97, so I hope the rules have changed, but I had to go to the bank, fill out paperwork, highlight charges that "you say are fraudulent". After all this, they said, we will give you a loan for the disputed amount, if after our investigation it turns out you are lying, you get some crazy interest on that loan. The money they gave me, didn't get to come to me till 20 business days (a month) and they finished their investigation (I was found not to have been lying) three months later.

Here is the sick stupid part... According to the investigation people, they caught the guy, but since he did not go above 5,000$ per PERSON robbed he didn't get a felony.

This was Key Bank, and I have not been "hacked" ever since. I had not bought anything over the internet, the ONLY thing I could come up with, was that ATM at the gun show.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Happened to me about 4 months ago. They charge a couple of bucks on the Apple store on music to check and see if it will work. If it goes through they hammer it. Had the bank contact me, and took about a week to get the money back.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I only use my debit card to get cash at top tier ATMs. I use my CC for all other purchases. CC companies can deal with fraud a lot easier than actual banks with cash missing from your account. I think a 48 hour turnaround and loans to cover investigations for my cash is unacceptable. With a CC fraud case you are never actually out of pocket any cash.

+1 for Lifelock... worth the piece of mind. They also reduced all of the relentless junk mail coming to my house.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

My wife manages our money, my parent's money, and our kid's money.

She has set it up so each person has different credit card accounts for purchases vs bill auto pay.

That way when a person becomes a victim of credit card fraud, the bills still get paid on time.

She gave me shit yesterday for writing a check from the wrong account. That account number is supposed to be a secret.

LOL thats the only thing I could think of while trying to read the other responses.

OP, Checking getting snatched sucks hope it turns out ok. Ad least its local and small of sorts to say. I have ahd my Credit(ID) stolen and it was like a wrecking ball especially since I needed to buy something at the time and didnt have enough credit. After many hours, reports and other shit I have it sorted out and am a LL customer.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

Actually you are paying for all of this rampant fraud, many in the form of credit card interest rates of over 27% and all the other bank fees, charges, etc.. Best bet like said is to use CCs for shopping, restaurants, etc. and your ATM card only at trusted ATM machines. Even those get compromised from time to time. Banks don't loose money in fraudulent transactions, they will get it back somehow.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

This is why I don't deal with plastic at all. I have one card from USAA that never leaves my safe unless I'm taking money out for the month, and it goes right back in. Am I paranoid, maybe, but I learned my lesson back in 2000 when over $2K disappeared out of my account.

I have no credit cards either.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I tried to go all cash one month but it scared the shit out of me to physically (as in a stack of cash) see how much it took to live each month. I prefer to use plastic and just pay it off at the end of the month...and I have a metric fuckton of freq flyer miles now

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I do some work in the technology industry and a customer of ours was a major rental chain. I got a call one day from the FBI and they asked if we could help them with a fraud case.

There were alot of people from all over the USA that were filing CC fraud cases and they all had one common purchase, at this particular rental agency's location they all rented a car.

Typically they would see this all isolated to a specific shift (i.e. Johnny took them on his 9-5 shift and sold them off) but it was spanning multiple shifts so it was harder to catch.

With surveillance we found that there was a group of people who would approach a clerk, and pay them $250 to plug this device in-line with the computer's keyboard. Note that the keyboards at the time were separate from the PC and had a stripe reader.

The PC's would encrypt the data but on the way to the PC it was unencrypted. This device plugged in-line to the keyboard and kept all track-1 and track-2 data (basically enough to print a duplicate credit card) and at end-of shift the people came back to collect their devices.

long story short they finally caught the guys and fired all of the staff that took the payments to plug the device inline.

Now most POS (point of sale) machines are integrated and there is no wire from the keyboard to the PC.

Another way they steal your card number on the integrated machines is to swipe it into a fake application and capture the track data, then switch to the real POS software and ask you to please re-swipe, the machine didn't take it the first time.....

I use LifeLock, i heard someone mention that already. I also subscribe to FreeCreditReport.com and check my credit monthly at a minimum.

I don't spend much at all. I still have $25 of the $40 I took out on Sunday.

I don't pay retail on flights anyways, and the plan I'm on doesn't allow Freq. Flyer miles. I have a contract with a ticketing agency, as I tend to fly about 60K miles a year.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I work in my departments financial crimes unit. This happens so often because it's so easy and so hard to actually prove a case. Most the time it's done over the internet or phone, if thats the case there will be no prosecution because you can never prove beyond a reasonable doubt who was actually typing on the keyboard or talking on the other end of the phone even after tracing an IP address or subpoenaing phone account holder records.

a lot of times is just running a random group of numbers until one hits and then going in sequence off of the last four.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I take these reports all the time and after it happened to me I really understood what the victims felt like as I took their information. Due to my credit union I got my money back the same day amd they made it painless as possible. It was a payday loan place in Houston Texas. Our white cooler crimes unit did not have much luck working with Houston pd even thought the store had the suspect on camera. To tell you the truth I still wish I could get my hands on that sob, he would regret pulling that shit.
Glad it worked out I now have identity theft protection through pre-paid legal and we will see how well it works.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

I hope thats the end of it for you, happened to me about 10 months ago, thought that was the end of it then 3 weeks later happened again. I had to change acct numbers and everything else. Took about 3 months to totally figure out what was what and finished dealing with the fraud dept. Keep an eye on it and good luck.

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

As of midnight last night my situation seems to concluded.....again. There was SNAFU with the "credit" on friday when they issued it. I guess it was entered for the wrong amount. Now it's all squared away again, for now

Re: Got robbed of $878.69 tonight...

somebody bought a bunch of spiral cut hams on my card from a well known store that specializes in them and had them shipped all over the US. Now thats stupid since they were all probably his family. But knowing our judicial system he probably got off scott free. They wouldnt even give me any information on the investigation. This probably means there wasnt one!
