Government unions are probably going out of business.

Everytime there is a gov’t shutdown I am STILL REQUIRED TO SHOW UP WITHOUT PAY. Tell me of anyone else that has to show up to work with no pay. Oh, and I have put 25+ pedophiles behind bars the last 3 years. Can I RELEASE THEM ON YOUR STREET FOR FUN since you think I am worthless?! Oh, BTW, most federal L.E are not part of a union. We have to pay for our own liability insurance, etc. BTW since you are “army” I have 18 years in the service currently between active and guard time with multiple deployments. You are a clueless tin foil hat man with too much time on the Internetz.

While you worked without pay during the shut down were you made whole when "work" resumed?

Never heard of a shut down where employees were not paid after the fact.

It sucks that you must work without pay but you are used as pawns.

At least you can be prideful that you are essential personel as evidenced by your requirement to show up. The lucky ones are the dead weight told to stay home than paid after the fact when the shut down ends.

One side or the other wants you to squeal in a certain way and support their side.

Instead of serving the people you are being used to support a political agenda.

Id prefer my shut downs to be just that, no one shows up everything "shuts down".

No offense bud, but a lot of us civilians show up (a lot) even when we're not being paid, and we never get that time back (pay or comp'ed), unlike the government. As stated in another thread, mission first, everything else is a distant second.

Well I don't do pentesting per se, I'm IT but I work with some cool systems.

Boom.

Aloha,

Let me preface my post that I respect all that have posted and will post after my opinion has been stated.

I am a Fire Fighter, I do not have the right to strike or walkout.
I love my community and respect my employer(the City)
I believe in my Community and respect all that reside in it.

I work hard and do everything that is expected of me.
I believe in democracy, in government as well as in the workplace.

Like:
Weekends?
Holidays?
40hr work weeks?
Overtime?
Healthcare?

I do.

I train hard everyday to provide the best service that I can.
I am also a union representative. I push this mantra to all my members.

Please do not trivialize what I do. If you would like someone to provide this service to you and your family for free, then by all means beat your chest for it.

I myself would rather have a professional be there in my time of need.

I cannot speak for you, just for myself and my family.

Aloha,
Andy

They are OK with higher insurance premiums with doubled response times until it's their house or livelihood being consumed.

In my profession, non union would mean minimum wage, part-time employees with high turn over, little training and no quality assurance... 911 dispatch/LEO. I can only imagine the positive FF/LE threads we would have on the hide then. :p

Oh... and I don't retire till I'm 62.

Democracy isn't what you live in.

One of my buddies is a retired fire chief, and he has plenty of stories about the Fireman's union protecting some real bad actors and keeping them on the job; to the detriment of their fellow fire fighters and the public. I would be surprised if this were shocking to anyone who has been a firefighter for any length of time.

There is good and bad, but criticizing the union is a far cry from criticizing the profession or the people, and if you take that personally and like an attack on your union is an attack on you...well then, you are largely proving the point, and it gets a lot harder to argue that where your loyalties lie are beyond question. A lot of flowery language about service really doesn't mean that much to me, or probably to a lot of people who have "served".

I believe in Democracy too. I believe it is a dangerous poison, like a cancer drug, that is only beneficial in very small doses as a check on power.
Making it into a political system, or believing it to be some sort of talisman protecting liberty has always been utterly disastrous. It turned Greece from the first superpower into a dysfunctional backwater. It was abandon during the republic and then abandoned completely for a thousand years after the fall of Rome. Worst of all in it's service some of the central pillars of our own Constitution have been kicked out from under us, and democracy is centrally responsible for the concentration of power in Washington and the abandonment of Federalism. Did you know we did not used to directly elect Senators? Yes. Out State Legislatures used to elect them. That's why the States used to have power, and now they're nothing more than big, muni governments, as all power us sucked into Washington DC...federalism.
