Hey Guys I am currently wrapping up a my first custom rifle. I have a defiance machine action and I want to cote it. I know there is all kinds of options available. I'm not sure what to go with...Dura cote, cera cote, teflon, black ice,Karbon Kote. I dont really know the difference and looking for advise. Thanks

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

i've been using norell's moly-resin for a few years now. it is easy to apply, looks great and holds up great. i have no reason to try anything else.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

I like Cerakote as a base, always.
Duracoat is easier to work with if you are doing the painting at home. It can be used to do more detailed airbrushing, I think it flows better thru an airbrush. I have limited time with coatings but from what I have done, basic solid colors and simple made up camo patterns..... but I still find duracoat the easiest to work with, but cerakote is the superior products when it comes to protection and durability.

+1. Very resistant to scratching more so than Duracote IMO.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

IMHO, Duracoat is for stocks and optics and putting camo on top of your primary barrier coating. It's quick and easy.

GunKote or Cerakote make a much better "I did it at home" barrier coat for protecting the metal of your barreled action from the elements. But you will need to make some sort of provisions to bake it. I personally like GunKote because I feel I can apply it a bit thinner than Cerakote, but that's probably more personal superstition than anything.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

I would suggest Duracoat if your doing it yourself. Cerakote is more durable but it can be a pain if you don't know what you are doing. Also not alot of people have access to an oven that will fit large pieces that need to bake for several hours. If cost is no matter and you are willing to wait BIRDSONG is probably as good as it gets. Green and black will be your only color choices though.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

I've done a few guns in duracoat. It is a nice finish, but isn't very abrasion or impact resistant. I used the stuff that you have to put on wit an airgun. I blasted the rifle, degreased it and followed all instructions. I'm still getting inexplicable dings and scratches that are right down to the metal.

On the plus side, it is very resistant to chemicals and does a good job of protecting the metal underneath.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

To my limited knowlege...durcoat is for stocks and CeraKote is for metal ...the later is "baked" on. I have not had a problem with my CeraKoted metal...anything can chip but it is pretty tough stuff.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

After seeing the "naval" (not tac ops) Green-T finish in real life, I love it.

W.E. Birdsong finishes FTW.

Its the flattest color i've ever seen. Its a slightly brown olive, but features in the metal dissapear because of its visual properties. Neat stuff, and I now know why its such a well kept secret.

Yup

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

If you are doing it yourself then stick with the DuraCoat. Cerakote is a bit of a PITA to get it done right.

It really depends upon what you are trying to accomplish by coating your rifle. If you want a durable coating that looks beautiful, provides great corrosion resistance, and has built-in lubricity I suggest <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">"Birdsong"</span></span> or <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">"ionbond"</span></span>. Read my <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">"Birdsong Finishes"</span></span> thread for accurate info on Birdsong "T" finishes.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

After about 6 guns later, Norell's just seems to get easier to use every time. Pretty tough finish to boot.

Re: Gun Finish- Which do you prefer?

That hi-power looks really nice. i like the norell's finish. i have done an amd-65, an ar15 that i found an old colt a1 upper, and matched the old colt gray with a new, black lower. didn't even have to do the upper, it matched so well. also did the badger dbm, and will be doing the 700 action and barrel when that gets finished
