Guys,
I am currently somewhat torn about what semi to keep in the arsenal. I have a G3 clone, and debating selling it for a rock river AR.

Thoughts?

I owned a PTR G3 for a few years, I'm a self titled ameture gunsmith and I couldnt get the rifle to be under 2 MOA, trigger was heavy, and recoil was excessive for a 308, not to mention the ejected brass looked like a tank track drove over it.

The AR and the G3 are different animals, but I would opt for a AR15.

Isnt every ar that is sold a clone too. Like an original hk G3 is full auto and an original M16 which is also full auto, theirs a bunch of company's that make civilian semi clones of those original versions. i had a g3 clone and it ran like a top. LOVED the gun. LOVED it. but it destroyed brass. and since i reload, it was a no go. so i ended up selling it and got my .308 AR. glad i did.

Also to mention I think on the msg91 versions they kinda got a port buffer on it, its almost like the receiver metal was extended out at the back port and I barely get a ding on the side of the brass so I guess either i got lucky or they improved the gun and all my brass is reloadable.

Which "G3 Clone" are we talking about? Some are very nice...others are...well...garbage.

Also, what do you need/want out of a semi-auto? The HK91/G3 clones are very different in basically every respect from your basic AR (whether a 223/5.56 or 308/7.62 variant). Do you have other ARs already? What gap are you envisioning needing to fill with an AR that the clone doesn't?

In other words...a little more info would be helpful here.

ITs a Century Arms. seems like a great gun so far, yeah it destroys the brass, but I dont reload so no loss there.

my semi Im mainly wanting for a "what if" I someday need it. I like that its a big ish cal, same bullet as my bolt gun is nice. able to punch through some stuff in case the zombies are hiding behind walls/cars, etc. No matter what I have, gotta be reliable and easy to work on with widely available rounds and parts. I just plain love my dads RRA operator2. very nice and lots of cool factor. G3 is nice and rugged, reliable, simple.

I need to sell some blood and have both. ;0)

Would not trade a G3 type weapon for anything that says Rock River Arms on it. Bushmaster, Daniel Defense, Bravo Company... Then Yes I would trade.

The only HK91 that doesn't destroy brass is the one that won't shoot. I have never seen an HK91 not go bang. Clones have issues with flutes not getting cut deeply enough or the headspace is set up wrong.

Not sure how Bushmaster got on the recommended list with DD and BCM, but if your going to purchase an AR get one from a company that has a good reputation and doesn't cut corners. My personal favorites are BCM and Noveske.

The CAI (Century) clones are the absolute bottom of the barrel when it comes to anything. They can suffer from poor fit/finish, out-of-spec parts, and most of the ones I have seen/fired appeared to have been assembled by a crack team of blind monkeys with about as much welding/gunsmithing experience as your average burger-flipper at McD's. I would not hesitate in the least to dump it in favor of a quality AR-15, including Daniel Defense, Noveske, Colt, etc., etc., etc. While I have owned RRA rifles and find them to be of decent quality for "commercial"/entry-level ARs, if this rifle will be a SHTF gun on which you may be trusting your life/the lives of others...I'd skip it and go with a different make/model, including but not limited to those mfgs I and others have mentioned above (excluding the @#$% BM recommendation that is).

We all know that the G3 is a lisenced clone of a CETME! I have to agree with the other guys.

I have made the mistake of getting a Century <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">Gal</span>oni</span> and it has turned out to be a turd! How the fuck can you make a weapon based on the AK not function? Shit craftsmanship!

I fully plan on replacing it with a AR.

Since when?
The HK G3 (HK 91/93) is based on the MG 42 LMG That was invented in 1942. The AK was invented in 1944. The design based on the variant CETME was designed by Dr. Ludwig Vorgrimmler on the the StG 45 also a german rifle. The rollor delayed blow back. I don't see anything really in common with the AK other than maybe the use of stampings.

Mechanic, I was using my Galoni as a for instance to the craftsmanship of Century. Not calling the G3 a AK.

I prefer the AR platform, mainly due to the fact that the the AR is more accurate generally speaking. HK91/clones aren't anywhere near as ergonomic to me, or as easily manipulated, They're also a pain for trying to accessorize, and you're very limited with optic mounting options, bipods, etc.

Of course I'd prefer an AR-10 type rifle, if I were planning to replace a 91.

I've wondered which would be a more reliable SHTF/run in the mud type of rifle.

This is totally confusing and false. This military CAVIM cased ammo has been shot over six times in the HK.

I don't think we are on the same page or planet. You seem to be on your own trail going lalalalalal. Please remove your blinders and read before quoting and don't re-post pictures it's rude and expensive in band width for the board owners.

I think the "how does it work" means how does it not cave in the neck when it crushes backwards out the port. ;0)

Looks like in the pic you have a big "knob" behind the ejection port? That would pick up the side rather than the neck, and at a much slower rotation speed. Heard of those mods before, good to know they work.

Yeah, Century parts look like ass, far as I have seen tho the thing operates very well. I had bad ammo once, but thats the only compaint so far. Thanks guys!

And yes, if I had $2500 this would not be a question, I would be sporting a new Noviske or LaRue in a heartbeat. But Im limited to a grand. So seriously, whats wrong with RRA? everyone I have talked to in person loves it to death, it exceeded all promises.

Nothing really.

If it were between the two I'd take the AR.

Also, for a grand you can build your own. Only problem is some parts are scarce right now so you might end up waiting a month or two for 1 part to complete it.

I have a C93 I had rebarreled to a RCM 1in7" twist that's an absolute hammer. The guy that did it for me in Oklahoma specifically does HK work and I've never seen his work not function. That being said since the rebarrel mine is a hammer with 75g hornady steel match.

I have both.PTR-91 and DPMS ar-10. I like the AR. The AR is far easier to upgrade. The main reasons why I don't like the PTR is what it does to the brass. My fired brass has deep flutes in every case. I reload so destroying brass is a bad thing. I have read that you can reload these but I don't. The barrel is not free floating on the PTR like my AR. Also the but stock on the PTR is far to low for me. The lower receiver is one piece so I can't change the grip. The PTR is a VERY dirty system. There is a shit load of carbon fauling on the bolt and ejection port. Try putting the bolt back together with your eyes closed. I can field strip my AR with my eyes closed and put it back together no problem. I HATE putting the PTR bolt back together it really hurts my fingers. With all that said I do like the way it looks and cheep mags you can get. Got a 30 rd mag for it and a bunch of 20's for cheep.
MJ1 was wondering why your brass does not have the flutes ? Does the H&K not make the deep brass ruining flutes the PTR makes. Also what about the fouling in the chamber area do you not get this in the H&K ? After firing, my bras looks like it rolled around in a mud puddle. Can you show pics of once fired brass and the rifle after firing 40-60 rds. Would like to compare what yours does compared to mine. Also, if you don't mind, what are your groups like ? Do they open up when it gets hot , mine spread the hotter the barrel gets. And lastly what ammo does yours like ? Thanks......

___Mr/ammodog I will dig around later and see if I have some just fired brass. I use CAVIM and LC brass and a good dose of H4895 to drive the 150g M2 ball and IMR 4064 for the 169g SMK. Nothing special on the clean up I use hot soapy water to clean the brass then a light tumble in corncob media. Most of the flute/chamber marks are pressed out in the sizing die. Thanks for the clear and easy to understand question.Group size is a funny question when your dealing with a 17" barrel and depends on the quality of what you feed the rifle. at my range paper targets stop at 200 yards and then it's steel from 300 to 500 yards the size of basket balls. That would have been good enough in my day and was.
