Ask any veteran still alive from wwII what they think of the Japs. My grandfather was in Pearl Harbor directly after the attack, for the cleanup. If he had his way, a lot more nukes would have been dropped. I respect the opinions of the ones that lived it.
My Father lived /fought through the Pacific Guadalcanal, a couple atolls,Tinian ,Okinawa. Shot shrapneled, burned end result : despised the japs when he heard the bombing news his platoon was hoping for a couple more to be dropped. Both of my Grandfathers & their Brothers were in the Pacific during WW2 with one Grandfather part of the occupational forces in Japan after the Bombs were dropped .
My view is it was necessary to do what was done to end the War, as unpleasant as that now seems to some people.

I dug around this afternoon but couldn’t find the de-milled ww2 Japanese civilian grenades my dad collected to take pics. Those fuckers are made out of thick fine ceramic and definitely would put a hurting on any US troops on the receiving end. They supposedly made enough to give to every man, woman, and child one on mainland Japan in the event that America invaded. The atomic bombs put a hurting on Japan but if an invasion happened a hell of a lot more people would be dead.
Or if we didn’t fund , arm, & train our attackers 20 years prior to start shit with Russia
Saipan, Pelelieu, Iwo, and Okinawa taught us that the Japanese had changed their tactics from winning the battle to bleeding us into negotiation.
The civilian populations where they existed chose suicide before capture or they were shot by their own troops if they considered surrender. Not so much Oki as the people were not pure ethnic Japanese and somewhat suffered at the hand of their "countrymen".
MacArthur was likely the only one looking forward to invading Japan so as to add shine to his ribbon rack, everyone else knew it was a shit show.
LeMay burned more people fire bombing Tokyo than died in Hiroshima.
When the Emperor advocated for surrender he was resisted by an armed Coup and basically jailed in his residence for a time.
Russia also started marching East at the date specified by Potsdam.
The two bombs saved a lot of misery for people that would have been crushed by the American hammer on the Soviet anvil.
Japan still had a very strong military - it was all isolated at posts too far away to defend the homeland.
The only means to get them to surrender was to have Tokyo issue the order.

I understand you probably wished Russia had won that ideological war, Marxism still might win, but the conflict between Communism and Capitalism is an existential threat.
We had to make choices along the lines of the "The enemy of my enemy...." type thinking.
I agree we could do a better job in choosing our "friends" but sometimes some distasteful tactics must be employed for strategic gains.
My issue with our current war mongering is
1. No achievable defined strategic goal.
We only go to war to achieve the stated objective than we end it and leave. Any conflict could be summed up in one or two sentences that are in plain understandable English, define the area of operation and clearly state the objective.
Example....."In response to the 9/11 attacks and lacking any lawful means to bring the perpetrators to justice within the Taliban provided sanctuary of Afghanistan, the US military will develop and conduct operations/tactics so as to close with and destroy the Al Quaida group and anyone providing them aid. Primary planners and perpetrators of the 9/11 attack shall be captured or killed. The handover of Osama Bin Ladin either alive or dead will allow any nation in which US forces deem it necessary to operate to conduct this war to than experience the rapid departure of US Forces and the Conclusion of hostilities. The strategic goal of this war is to emphasize that attacks upon US Citizens or property will be met with the assured arrest or destruction of the attackers".
2. No formal declaration putting people on record. No politicain will be able to say "I was for the war before I was against it".
3. No national mobilization, to include a draft, that requires every person in the nation have skin in the game. No one cared about the war while less than 1% fought it. Everyone must sacrifice or its not an existential event.
WW II was unique in that the Japanese attacked us first. The enlistment lines were long on 8 Dec. Everybody want a piece of the Jap's ASS and while we're at it, let's get some Kraut ASS too.
I really do think that unless a person is actually going hands on with an enemy, killing them as they also kill your friends with you, and doing their best to kill you too, you really don't have any idea what HATE really is. You may think you do, but you don't know shit from shinola unless you were there, Maybe it starts off with you having lost a friend to that enemy? but it boils down to a hatred for that enemy and you want to destroy them and everything they have.
It is a hate that goes clear to the center of your heart.
My Father was a tail gunner on a B-24 out of Italy bombing Germany and flew all of his missions to be rotated out but stuck around for 17 more mission before being hurt bad enough to not be able to carry on. 1 bail out and 2 hard landing in Yugoslavia during his tour.
My Father would not allow ANYTHING that was made in Germany or Japan in his house and would do without if that was the only thing around.
Everything we has was Made in the USA.
I learned a thing or 2 from him and you will not find clothing or anything else made in Vietnam in my house nor will you find tires made by Michelin, collaborators with the NVA and VC to protect their interests over there, and yes I did fight in the Michelin plantations over there and dealt directly with Frenchy. It was not good. Frenchy lost.
My Squaw bought a new car last year that had Michelin tires on it and in order to seal the deal, the Michelins came off and were replaced with other tires before she could bring it home.
I don't care that the Michelin tires were the best in the west, they will not be on any vehicle down to a skateboard in my driveway, and yes it did cost me some bucks but I can live with that.
What I am trying to tell all of you bleeding hearts is that unless you have battled with the enemy you have NO idea what HATE really is, I know what it is and am getting ready to put some HATE out, when I was drafted and sworn in to protect the constitution from All enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC.
More people need to think back and remember the Oath they took and take to heart such as I did and realize it does not stop with ETS.
You should carry that Oath for your lifetime. FM

My father was w/ the Chinese National Army through WWII. He recalled two rare exuberant days during the war: the day US bombers reached Tokyo, and the day the first atomic bomb was detonated. During the 8 year Sino-Japanese War, thousands of troops and ten times more civilians died everyday there. Shortening the war by even one month would have saved more lives in Asia than the loss of lives in Japan. I guess it depends on how to do the calculation...
Millions of people who died during the war would have chosen to be vaporized rather than the actual way In which they died in the hands of Japanese occupiers.

Although, it appears more and more that the people that need to know this the most are at the same time, the least likely to understand or care.....
I think an example of how bad our Fathers and Grandfathers, Uncles etc. hated the Japanese is how they destroyed all of the airplanes etc. that they captured with no thought that it might be good in a museum for we that came later.

I've been to the island of Tinian where the nukes were loaded and saw the actual pits. I was also picked up by the mayor and had a coconut crab feast prepared by his wife. I also snorkeled to the tanks left rotting in the ocean on Saipan from WWII. The most haunting thing was scuba diving in Palau with the airplanes that had been shot down and were still well preserved. So much cool history over there!

All 3 of your points are the direct result of socializing our national security, which is one of the most important issues that should be left to the market. Or it should at least be left to the states to decide how to figure that out
And before I get the “well, I guess you just want to be invaded” argument. There’s no fucking country that’s going to invade us. We have too strategic of a position on the planet and too many guns for anybody to dare that shit
