Has anyone here quit or "quit" tobacco?

I've had a bit of a run at things on this topic myself. Presently I consider myself an "former" cigarette smoker & dipper but I still have my momentary relapses. Other than that- I still enjoy the occasional cigar (which I absolutely refuse to give up completely) and I'm also a regular pipe smoker these days (imagine how that comes across here in 2025... but hey I've always did things my way).

I imagine I started smoking cigarettes as either a freshman or sophomore in High School (things were a bit different then, not exactly "accepted" but a blind eye was often turned by our 'elders'). In a lot of ways, I'd reckon that I started smoking (1) because it was still socially acceptable (if you went to a restaurant you would be asked smoking or non-smoking) and (2) most of the elders I looked up to (almost exclusively WWII Vets) all smoked like it was going out of fashion and on that matter (3) smoking was still very much a common thing on TV as well.

In a lot of ways- I did things... I'll say differently as I was all about the menthol cigarettes at the time. I'm pretty sure I started smoking Marlboro Milds (the blue pack years before legislation came down to alter how cigarettes were labeled). I eventually moved to Marlboro menthols (full flavor/green packs) but took a side route into smoking Camel Turkish Jades.. I still think about those even though they've been discontinued for likely over 20 years now.

At that time, it was fairly common to see gas stations offer "buy one-get one" type of deals and I ran the gamut I'd suppose. I loved my Turkish Jades and also Marlboro Menthols- but would often take advantage of the deals and would smoke Kool's, Salem 'Blacks' (they had a cool pack that slid sideways), and also Parliament's (the smoke with the recessed filter). Occasionally I'd smoke Newports (hey I went to HS in the inner city and sometimes that's all that was available). But primarily Camels & Marlboro's were my thing. Camel also came out with 'premier' type of smokes that came in a tin rather than a cardboard box and they had otherwise exquisite/other worldly flavors in that line for a short time before that got shut down by the government.

After HS, I somehow got introduced to dipping and supplemented my smoking with dips, at the time Kayak (I remember that being one of my first cans), but also Shoal & Grizzly (want to say peach was my preferred flavor there, but also enjoyed green apple). There was a berry blend (I seem to remember it being from Skoal) that just gave me absolute heartburn so that was short-lived but there was also a vanilla type of blend that caught my fancy. I also was smoking "cigars", quotations being that they were swisher sweets/Philly blunts/etc.

Shortly afterwards- I got lost navigating college and found myself wearing a uniform because (believe it or not) I was afraid I'd miss being able to participate in the 'war' that started after 9/11. I remember going through BCT & AIT and not being allowed any tobacco and it being hell but after months without it, as soon as I was able to, I went back into it without any reservations.

My 'tastes' had changed somewhat though- I now was enjoying non-menthol cigarettes (primarily Marlboro Reds & Camel Filters) and when it came to dip I was all about the Copenhagen (would argue with others about the 'born on date' on the cardboard half of the can, and we'd get it so fresh/like within a week). That was some good stuff there.

Most folks that were also wearing a uniform seemed to gravitate towards the snuff but I never could make that work for me so I was primarily a 'long cut' guy (at least until Copenhagen briefly introduces their 'black' line that was mid-cut which I also enjoyed the hell out of.

Eventually I deployed and got what I was chasing after and dip became a crutch just to stay awake often times. I was also fully exploring chew- I remember before enlisting trying mail pouch tobacco which was just 'bleh' but Levi garret & southern pride (?) that was some tasty stuff there (and inexpensive). While deployed I was also introduced to 'good' cigars, real cuban long leaf type and that's where I fell in love with those/quality cigars in general.

Fast forwarding- I had enough of wearing a uniform and got out when my contract was over. I pretty much gave up on the chew (mainly because my situation had changed) but kept up with the Marlboro's/Camel's & Copenhagen. I eventually started dating locally and as odd as it sounds- I quite literally accidentally 'gave up' the Copenhagen because the lady I was courting didn't care for it and I was rather smitten with her (I eventually ended up marrying her) but it was never an intentional choice to stop enjoying Copenhagen, just one of those things that happened.

Cigarettes however- that's a different story all together. Long story short- I've quit at least a half dozen times and presently I tend to stick with smoking a pipe regularly and having the occasional cigar. BUT- anymore, although I say I've quit cigarettes, at least 2 or 3 times a year since then I cave and just have to give into whatever stressor is going on and buy a pack or two. It's gotten a bit harder to resist now that Lucky Strike cigarettes are back (and I have history with those).

But it is what it is I suppose- but one of the things that shocks me is I know cigarettes were never all that amazing and were primarily just an addiction (same with the dip/chew) but I can go months without any of it but still dream about smoking/dipping/chewing. Just strikes me as a bit crazy.

Anyway- that's my cliff notes about tobacco- just curious if anyone else had any similar stories is all.

Nicotine gum, quit when I was 50, chewed ever since. I was pissed at the price, the amount in taxes and where those taxes went. I used hatred and anger.
I can get behind that- I still remember buying my 1st carton of smokes after I got out and it was something like $40 at that time and I was absolutely blown away. I said I just bought a carton for less than $30 last week. I also went to Newport, RI for work and asked for 2 packs of whatever and they said something along the lines of "that'll be 20 something or another" and I told them I only asked for 2 packs and they looked at me like I had a 3rd eyeball in my forehead.

I'm at the top of my game thus far income wise (hopefully that momentum will continue) but now a carton of cigarettes is well over $100 and frankly I just can't afford the habit anymore.

Quit cold turkey, 2-3 packs a day to nothing, in 1982. Never cheated once. Never restarted or dipped or cigars or pipes. Nothing. Quit cold and kept it that way for 43 years now.
I always hear about folks that are able to do that- I came dang close myself- cold turkey for 51 1/2 weeks but I had to start over.

Sincerely- that's amazing and good for you. That's rather remarkable and something to be proud of.

You have to have a reason that is personal to you and you alone. You must decide for yourself. Someone else cannot make the decision for you. Someone else's reason won't work for you. It's not one day at a time, it's one smoke at a time. The urge to smoke lasts about 6-8 minutes. Who can't resist to smoke for 6-8 minutes? The urge will return but all you have to do is resist for 6-8 minutes each time you get the urge.

I smoked and dipped. Smoking is how it started. Then dipping when cigarettes were a nogo deployed.

    Then back to cigarettes.

One day I just decided to dial it back. Got a vape. It was so gay I just shamed my addiction away. One day I threw the whole thing away and haven’t touched anything with nicotine or anything like since.

Dip was always my issue. I liked chilling and throwing in a fatty lip, or having one on a long drive.

    Quit cold turkey...dipping only.

From high school through 8 years in the corps and after.

Finally decided to take that same money and dedicate it to shooting , mostly pistol competition, USPSA, IFPA, STEEL, ETC. Then changed it into buying long range rifles for hunting, target, competition. Best decision I ever made, never looked back, never started or even had an urge again.

Once you hit the 30 day mark, it's easy.

That's pretty cool, at today's prices I can only imagine how much you were able to divert to that pursuit. To clarify though- I do the same thing but still fail several times a year buying a couple of packs of smokes (pipe tobacco & cigars excluded though).

Smoked for 7 years straight and quit cold turkey and went three months. Got a little too confident and relapsed. I’ll quit again soon and won’t go back this time since I’ve learned from my mistake.
Good luck to you- putting numbers to... well life, 7 years into my smoking cigarettes would have put me at around age 20/21. I'm quite a bit older than that now. As I've said- I've 'mostly' quit but about 3-4x a year I just relapse and have to buy a pack or two (or three).

This won't be received well, but the wife and I vape (since 2008).
    Lots of disinformation out there.
We don't do high wattage smoke plumes and don't do strange flavors.
I mix our own juice from VG/PG 50/50, 1 percent Nicotine and 8 to 10% flavor, a liter at a time, kept in the freezer.
Not pop corn flavors or Dragon Farts, or dairy or pastry.
At 74 my brain cells are fully developed and the Nicotine just might be crossing the brain barrier as Nicotinic Acid (Niacin (vitamin B3)).
While not good for young people, it might be something that helps in old age.
Quitting cold turkey is obviously best but I still see SMOKERS my age.

In grade school I started smoking cigarettes with my year-older brother and our friends who were our age- most of us quit within a couple of months because we realized how stupid and unhealthy it was. I've never used tobacco products except for that short time.

When you have to force your lungs to take in such bad air & smoke- that's called a clue.

You won't get any crap from me.

I haven't had a single lip of Copenhagen in almost 10 years but I still get the most random of cravings for it and still dream about it.

If you & your wife vape and that's your choice- you won't hear anything from me saying otherwise. You're both adults and are entitled to making your own decisions.

Smoked from 95-2016. Dipped when I was in the corps in the field. Was smoking 2 packs a day, decided to try and quit. Went to electronic cigarettes for awhile, then to vapes. Vaping was gay but got me off cigarettes. Quit vaping for nicotine gum and then switched to nicotine pouches which I’m still doing. Haven’t smoked or even thought about it since 2015. Don’t really have any plans on quitting the pouches.

No shame in doing what you gotta do to get off cigarettes and no judgment here. Fruity flavors and big plumes of vape beats the hell out of nasty ass cigarette smoke.

Getting off cigarettes / Tobacco is what matters. You do what you gotta do 👍🏻

Happy to hear things worked out for you. I tried the patches before but they gave me the worst dreams imaginable.

So I'm sticking with the pipes & cigars and occasional failures with cigarettes.

Thanks man. Patches never worked for me. Xyn and Rougue nicotine pouches is what I use now. They’ve worked well for me.

The other thing I tried (working with my doctor) was between trying Chantix, which I didn’t want to do because I saw the ‘rare’ side effects and it causing a complete mental breakdown.

So I tried option ‘B’, which was Welbutrion, that prescription works for many others, but it damned near made me suicidal. So no-go for me.

I smoked from about age 17 to I think about 35. Then quit the smokes and starting dipping.

A few years into dipping I started the Zyn. I’d have a pouch in my lip from the time I woke up to the time I went to bed.

One day I decided enough was enough and quit cold turkey. Wow did that suck.

I quit the Zyn about four months ago. Every once in a while I’ll enjoy a heater or a dip just for the buzz. But I’m confident I won’t be regular user like I once was. Too goddamned expensive.

I'm an advocate of responsible vaping.
By that I mean age appropriate (old farts) low wattage, low nic levels.
I stay away from commercial "E-Juice", prefilled Pods, Gay Pen vapes :).
Vaping will NOT help you if you are not committed.
There will be an initial $ outlay to get started, maybe as much as a new set of reloading dies.
We currently use vapes with a replaceable 18650 battery, variable wattage (capable of 80 watts) at a low 8-10 watts with a Nicotine strength level of 8-10 mg/ml. Some pods are 50mg/ml
One way or another get off SMOKES.

Started with Lancaster chew, and occasional cigar. Messed up and tried dipping, Silver Creek at the outset, then Skoal Vanilla, loved that shit, and various other flavors. Currently on Skoal Peach and Citrus, occasionally chew Starr peach flavor.

After about 40 years of the habit I quit cold turkey a couple times, longest was 2 months, craved the shit EVERY DAY, irritable SOB with even less patience than normal.
Weened myself down to a can a week currently but can’t talk myself into quitting full time, and not sure I can quit. I have cut stuff from my diet cold turkey and had no problem not relapsing, nicotine is a completely different animal for me, can’t believe how much I crave it when I do try quitting. Cudos to those who have kicked the habit.

Smoked for 25 years, 2-3 packs a day for a lot of that time. When I rotated back to the States in 2014, the price of a pack was enough to make me quit...but I had to get a douche flute for the nicotine. Quit drinking over a year ago, but for some reason I still vape.

Started in the early seventies. Everyone’s dad smoke. It was a social norm. Quit 17 APR 81, 1105AM…approximately. I don't think gum or patches were a thing yet.

Opened a fresh pack and told myself, this is it. Destroyed the rest of three cartons. Stretched that pack for three days and haven’t touched one since.

I have smoked for 25ish years. 2+ packs a day. Dec 22 was my last cigarette. Hasn’t even been a month yet but I’m proud of myself. Still want one every day. My girls will be seven in February. They are my reason for quitting

I wanted one for years. Especially after a meal or drinking a beer.

This is the only way to quit. Just do it or don't do it.

I smoked for about 15 years and then quit. That was over 15 years ago and have not though about it since.

Skoal or Copenhagen for yrs and yrs. All through High-school and after. Quit in 1993. Absolutely the best thing I've ever done and the hardest thing I've ever been through in my life so far. Took me yrs to loose the cravings. Sunflower seeds saved me.

    Hayden.

I did the same thing. 2 packs a day to cold turkey picked a Monday and woke up that morning and never smoked another one again. Never a drag or cheating or anything and its been just over 14yrs... Had my first child in March of that year and December 12 same year I quit cold. Just didnt want my kids seeing my smoking and the birth of my son did it for me..

Tried Chantix 2x. Never lasted more than 2 weeks on it. Made me cranky / irritable. Mental stuff was rough. Tried Wellbutrin but that stuff made me feel dull and slow mentally. Didnt last on that either.

I quit smoking "lucky strikes" back in '85. I got desperate one night while driving my 18 wheeler. Parked along side of an interstate, ran across 2 lanes of interstate to a convience store for smokes. In a snowstorm. They were a buck a pack back then. When I got back, sparked up one and got to thinking. What a dumass you are. Those smokes could've gotten me killed. Threw them out the window and never smoked again. I breathe better. Sleep better. Food taste better. No stink in my truck or on my clothes. Now they are $11 @ pack around here. Wonder how much I've saved in 40 yrs? Never regretted it. Just my 2 cents. Rob

If my memory is correct, $2.19 a carton in the commissary when I quit.

I was a 2 pack a day smoker until November of 1989. One day a little voice in my head informed me that this was my last day as a smoker. I smoked for the rest of the day and went to bed. I've never picked up since.

From that day until now represents my first attempt at quitting smoking.

A couple of weeks in to it I promised myself that I might start again, but I would put myself through quitting again. Those first few weeks purely sucked.

I haven’t been drinking the past few weeks either because I know as soon as I have a drink I’m going to want a smoke

Meal and drinking were 1000% the hardest times the first 3 months. I literally didnt go out or socialize just to avoid this. haha

Quit Cope like four years ago, cold...because of my new addiction lab-grade nicotine. Better flavor, better high, cleaner teeth, no bad breath, less expensive! Goddamm, it was like a healthy fucking alternative (disregard the borderline hypertension and prolonged sinus tachycardia). I'm currently cold-turkey quit on the lab-grade too, 10 days in and counting. Promised myself something nice with the quitting dividend if I make it to the end of the year...

    Funny story on this.

I had a friend hand me a partial box of the highest strength quit smoking patches. I dont even remember what the brand was. This was Thursday before the Monday I picked to quit. He said, smoke your brains out, get it all in this weekend, then wake up Monday and put the patch on. He said it helped him and here is a partial box of the initial high strength patches you start out with. So I smoked all weekend, I remember my last cig, 11:36pm on Dec 12, 2010. I woke up Monday morning, took a shower, slapped a patch on.

Went to work, I was agitated and wanting a cig but I guess this patch kept the edge off just enough that I didnt give in. Came home from work that night, ate dinner and went to bed.

I had THE WORST FUCKING NIGHTMARES OF MY LIFE. I am talking CRAZY, WILD, murderous shit about me and my close friends. You wouldnt believe me if I told you the dreams. Just nuts murderous shit. And the thing is, I am one of those people that dont dream. I might remember a dream once or twice a year.

I woke up Tuesday morning and said holy shit wtf was that. I tell me wife and shes like man thats some crazy shit.. I rip the patch off, shower, slap another one on and go to work day 2. This repeats the next 2 nights....

I finally see my buddy that gave me this partial box of patches Thursday afternoon.. I tell him how the week has gone and about these insane nightmares. He looks at me and said.. asshole did you read the directions? Uh, no.. I just slapped the patch on in the morning and rinse and repeat daily..

He says read the directions when you get home. Sure enough, I read the box and it says right on the back. "WARNING do not sleep with the patch on. Remove before bed. Will cause vivid nightmares.":p:D:Do_Oo_O

I cracked up, finished off day 7 of this partial 14 day box and never bought another box or used another patch again after the first 7 days.

    I smoked cigarettes from May 25, 1982 until January 28, 2018, almost 36 years.

I had been trying a vape but I liked cigarettes. But I had a cold and I was having trouble breathing. But I liked the taste of tobacco.

So, I made a deal with myself. I will tug on the vape as many times as I want as long as I don't touch another cigarette. And I kept that promise even though it was difficult at times. My job is so hugely stressful that it defies explanation.

Anyway, so, starting at 33 watts, I eventually decreased usage and wattage. Now, it is down to 15 watts. I may take one drag in the morning before leaving the house and it is really just for taste, not inhaling. And that is why I went with tobacco flavor.

I can go 6 or 8 or 10 hours. Mostly I keep it around as a "security blanket," even if I don't touch it all day.

As a singer, my voice had been suffering but dropping cigarettes, the first thing to come back was my voice, along with the easier breathing. So, last night, driving home, I was singing "Peace of Mind" by Boston. All of it.

Funny thing is, I was not trying to live longer, that's just a side effect. I am glad to have my voice back.

Because of my history, my doctor put me in a lung cancer study. I have had two annual exams. Totally clear. I lucked out big time. Cancer does not run in my family, which may have been part of that.

I understand about wanting to smoke while drinking. I still like my whiskey but don't need a cig to go with it.
