So if you shot this competition and used the Atlas, I'd like to hear from you as I value objective feedback.

I wasn't shooting but was an RO. Main issue I saw was that it just took too long to get them switched into another position when under time restraint.

I think the crux of the issue is the speed at which a Harris can be deployed and adjusted for height being much faster then the atlas v7 & 8 (I have a 7 but the 8 does not seem to be much faster). In a few stages I had found for the most stable position in each shooting position I would need to start with the bipod folded, unfold it for a few shots, refold for a few, and then unfold and adjust for height for the last few shots prone (truck stage mostly but others too). This took much longer having to pull down and swing each leg then just pulling a 550 cord loop a few harris users were running. The leg height adjustment was WAY more involving then just simply releasing the leg with a push button. The time burnt up adjusting the bipod was appreciable...

The Atlas has some nice features like the traverse and easy preload, but the harris is faster to manipulate. I have very rarely used the 45degree leg positions and the Harris can be pod locked down to a more solid platform then the Atlas tension knob provides.

I plan on keeping my v7 spigot and playing with a larue harris on an atlas 3 rail spigot and seeing how that works out in the next year.

I also want to commend you on your customer service and if our feedback helps produce a "v9" that addresses the speed issue, I'll be right back in line for one.

Hey Kasey,

(I shot last weekend with my V8.)

I'm a big fan of the Atlas and have two (v7&8). When it's deployed the thing feels solid and the function is perfect. Though I admit it's rather difficult to adjust the legs and deploy quickly under pressure... Just my experience last weekend. It seems to take a little more digital manipulation to get it where you want but it's also more adjustable than other bipods so I'm not sure I would change it.

LVMIKE, Regarding the speed in deploying the legs from folded, I don't know that we will ever beat the Harris as far as being able to pull a "rip cord" to deploy the legs. I have thought of a way to get the legs from folded back to deployed into the 90 with one hand. We'll see, maybe we do a competitors bipod with nothing but speed in mind.

Regarding the speed in adjusting the leg length, if starting with both legs deployed at the 90 degree position, the Harris uses a detent the Atlas a spring loaded collar. I'm not sure I see where one would be faster than the other. (I have shot from the Harris, notch version, and sometimes the legs would stick and require both hands to pull the inner leg out. Which in part was the nucleus behind making the outer leg of the Atlas move or adjust on "fixed" inner leg.)

I appreciate your patronage and will always strive to not only gain your business but keep it.

rksimple, what were you trying to manipulate, the leg position or leg length?

Regarding the grit, (see above) my thinking, was with the Atlas you have the part that moves in your hand, and you should be able to clear it and move it with one hand.

Regarding the one that fell, (of course I'd want to talk to that shooter to get first hand information) I suspect it is a V7. There is no way for the legs on the V8 to do that UNLESS the detent is not engaged.

For clarity, were you guys both running Atlas bipods in the match?

The fall was mine, let me elaborate as I dont know exactly how it happened because of being focused elsewhere. It was a v7 spigot Atlas on an AI AW that I used for the entire match. I was very pleased with how it preformed on many other stages, so the 400$ Larue-Atlas-Pheonix-Harris setup I just finished pricing is going to have to be amazing to get kept.

The stage was in the wash series of stages and involved running through a pipe and taking a shot from the other side of it prone with part of your body inside. Given the uphill angle I had deployed the bipod and extended the legs prior to starting the stage. I went through the tunnel (clumsily) to the end carrying the rifle by the middle in my right hand and thrust it forward onto the bipod legs while dropping prone. When the bipod legs hit I was letting go with my right hand to move to the grip when the front right leg folded to the 45 position and put the rifle into the mud. The rifle still worked fine but it cost a second to pull the rifle back close enough to fix the leg out and re-setup. I am sure that prior to entering the tunnel it was firmly locked. I dont think a v8 would have done this and I suspect it may have been some kind of bounce because the rifle hit kinda hard.

I just observed that it was hard to adjust height quickly while in position. Lots of fumbling when competitors would realize the height wasn't going to work for a particular part of a COF. I wasn't running one personally.

As for the grit, I think it was the locking ring thing. The leg wouldn't lock to a specific height. It slid freely.

ah, that helps Mike, and first let me apologize for that experience. I never thought about several dynamics when doing that leg positioning system. One is the FACT that the V7 bipod legs that are pulled to move into position can get dis-engaged un-intentionally. If the rubber foot catches anything and the rifle moved in a linear manner away from the foot, it is dis-engaged. I totally missed that "possibility" as I did the same dis-engagement under heavy recoil in the 45 degree position on any surface where the foot will drag. For me, this was never a problem but again shooting fixed from dirt, not rocks or sewer pipes!

How many competitors did you observe having problems adjusting the Atlas legs?

The "Collar" is what is pulled (spring loaded) to adjust the leg length. And in theory should spring back once the leg notch is located and engaged. In use where grit lives, keeping the fingers on the collar controls the collar and you can force it into the "hold" position.

Another member did a modification to these collars after the Mammoth shoot which he shared with me. That conversation inspired a change to these collars that should make it easier to manipulate them with one hand in the cold and wet.

Ahh, no worries Kasey. It will be in the mail soon for that upgrade. I thought about it a bit more and the v8 does seem like an improvement in speed to deploy as disengaging the lock is more tactile with the v8 button then the v7 pull. I remember having not pulled far enough down to rotate the leg a few times. The button can be pressed easier when supporting the rifle with one arm then trying to pull it and support it. So I am encouraged to do the upgrade now after playing with the v7 in ways typical range time doesn't stress it.

You are right the V8 should be faster as there is no need to pull the leg in a straight linear motion to rotate. Just grab leg, press button and rotate leg into desired location, release button and check for engagement.

The V8 is more positive that way for sure.

Same here. Some of the stages had challenges where extended was too high, sucked in was too low and folded was the only was to get on target, all in the same 2 minutes for 5 shots from 5 positions.

Granted-I did not see many competitors think of using the 45* feature to solve those problems and it would might have...

On the course that I was RO of, I saw the Atlas worked better than a Harris when both were used with the fronts of the legs butted up against a barricade, but in most other situations I saw no clear advantage.

In all fairness when we ran the RO's through the COF Friday, my Harris' swivel and leg assembly sheared from the attachment plate on Matt's barricade, forcing me to strip my kneepads off and use them under the stock for the final firing position of the pbstacle course.

If I had the dough I'd replace it with a V8 to give it a try jsut to see if the V7 to V8 evololution cured the places I wasn't thrilled with on the V7.

I ran with a V8 and the only thing I saw as a minor disadvantage was the ability to instantly deploy the legs from folded to open with one hand. I was otherwise very happy with mine and I'm not about to go back. In fact, I've got an order in for 3 and need to up it to 8.

Seriously though, I noticed on my stage that a few Harris legs were knocked out of alignment or the push buttons were engaged when pushing the rifle against a barricade for support only to see them have one leg extended and another short when they went prone, nothing is perfect.

I think it's great that Kasey is seeking out input from the community to make his product the best it possibly can be. He also donated a gift certificate to the AZ TPRC for one of our side matches which can't be said from the other maker mentioned.

This has been an eye opener for me, not that the Atlas is fail-proof, it is made by man, but I never thought that by adding options, it would create the desire on the shooters part to "manipulate it into perfect" for a given shot. Under a timer, I'm thinking "good" is good enough, "perfect" is for when you have the time for perfection! I'm also glad you offered your experience at TPRC RO day as well. We are getting a few parts that are blemished so some day we'll end up with a blemished Atlas. Name it and claim it Brother! (probably be 15% off).

Ran a V7 with leg extensions on the AR. That gave two heights right there, one straight down and @45 degrees. The extra length came in handy esp. in the wash stages. Also having the longer legs folded back helped in some stages.

I did not run it in TPRC (flight school $$$ is keeping me home...), but I did run the V8 in our local NCPPRC steel match, as well as last months LR match. I just got it a week before the Jan 2011 LR match, and was itchin to try it out.

It's very ironic that I ran into this thread because after last weekends match, I left with an opinion very similar to those posted above.


First impression when zeroing prone on the concrete was - it sits a tad higher than the Harris, but definately more sure footed, and the pan looked real promising for movers. Last month at out LR match I got in some some deep gravel, so I went to make a quick adjustment on the legs,and found that a quick adjustment when prone and waiting for targets to come up was not that easy. Ended up not getting the first shot off at 900yds. That happened a couple times that day.

This last weekend our MD's decided to shake things up a lil on the steel program, and really light our asses on fire timewise. Almost no prep, and real quick shoot times, in multiple positions. Gear management was make or break. I found myself in the position wishing I could fold the legs up faster, so I could go from prone, down into a doghouse and bust a few shots out the lil windows. I felt distracted by it. I saw a couple V8's in that same pickle.

So basically my only hangup is the issue of deploying the legs predictably with one hand in position, quickly,and folding it up and down taking a lot more digital movement and time.

This is no doubt a superbly crafted piece of kit, and this is all just my 0.02

First of all Kasey, I think that is awesome that you go to a forum like this to discuss your product. It shows us that you really care about our input and truly care about improving your product. Other suppliers should be so brave!

Now for my 2 cents, deployment is the main issue. This is the 2nd match that I have shot a V8. Didn't really bother me at Rifles Only, but was a real issue at TPRC. Several stages where I would have rather folded the bipod quickly and moved on, then deployed again at another shooting location. For the most part, I left the legs deployed, which put me in some odd shooting positions.

I did have trouble in "the wash" with grit getting between the ball bearings and the collar making locking nearly impossible.

I'm all for a "comp" version. I'm sure you will not starve for input from all of us.

While 'I' did not have the problem with the collars not locking, this is my only real area of concern. I'd like to see two things in this area.

One, some sort of dust cover for the bearing area, like a rubber boot. The real challenge there is making it replaceable after it finally tears, which would mean being able to remove the outer leg. Tools are fine here, since it's not a field repair.

Two, I'd like to see more of a flange at the bottom of the collar to facilitate the pull down to extend/retract the leg. The knurling is nice, but not enough when cold, wet and muddy.

(Actually, match conditions were pretty good, we had sleep, could be well fed if we liked and no one was trying to kill us, so all in all, the conditions were just fine.

Cory, these are pretty easy to disassamble in the shop, so a cover on the collars would not be hard to do.

The flange on the bottom of the collar is in the works. I came up with a mod that added a lever to the collars for this reason. I talked to Kasey about it and he came up with a solution that will work well.

Regarding the collar and not locking. We have subjected them to grit and could clear them by pulling the collar and sliding the outer leg to the "stops" at each end. Rotating the collar will also help clear any debris. I know, this takes time.
Are you running a V7 Atlas or V8?

CoryT, the boot would have to seal top and bottom and I'm of the opinion whatever got in there, and it would, it would be trapped. Maybe we can just add some tolerance to the bearing surfaces and ball holes?

Regarding the collar manipulation, gugubica was the first to point this out to me and the solution is as you describe.

And your perspective on the match is priceless.

Since it easy enough to remove the foot, you might be able to deal with the grit issues by some flutes inside the collar area. Then a twist of the colar could clear it, if it indeed accumulated enough to block it.

Another idea, though I don't have mine here in the office to look at. It might work to install a plate above the collar area, E clipped or threaded to the outer leg body. Put in O rings that the outer collar and inner leg would seal against. Extend the outer collar until the O ring stays covered in operation. Clipped in or screwed in, you could remove the plate with a spanner for O ring replacement. Loss or damage of this part would not affect operation. That's better than that boot idea, which if I'd been a litle more awake at the time I'd have discarded before typing it.

Kasey, First off, I would like to express how great it is that you are so proactive about your product. It is really something to have someone else care as much about improving my shooting (and everyone elses too), as much as I do. Thank you for your time.

As for the "leg adjustment", I was refering to changing the length of the legs when in firing position. This particular day I was squaded in a particularly deep side of the berms. I found myself having to change leg length seems like every berm. This gravel is really small and coarse like 5/16- drain rock or something, and if your pod was not seated on the hard ground beneath before you fire, you will be after the first shot. Once I got prone I could see that the muzzle needed to comeup a good few inches after sinking and for the life of me I could not get the leg lenghth adjusted before the targets came up. This could also be me just having to learn another way to skin the cat.

Getting the legs to stow in a timely manner is the other the other issue, but after posting on this thread last night I just started playing with the pod, and found that if you wrap your hands over both legs, and depress both releases' simultaneously with your thumb, and index finger, I can get the legs to fold down and stow up in a pretty reasonable amount of time. This might be highly subjective though, as I'm 6'6" 250# with gorilla hands. Seems like this can be an aquired skill, that could possibly get quicker, and more consistant with a lil practice? ?????

I'm not ruling out that since this pod is so radically different from the norm, I might just need a lil more match time and practice behind it to get the unique fundamentals of operation down to were the speed and efficiency come naturally due to an intimate knowledge on how to use this pod most efficiently. Time will tell. Hopefully before TBRC.

I bought a new V8 or possibly a 7.5

from you at the 2010 Shot Show.It had "the fix" on it.Let me start off by saying I was very impressed with your personal demeanor and business attitude.You're the kind of person I would prefer to buy products from.I also thought the bipod to be a improvement over others in more than a few ways.Thanks for being a sponsor at the TPRC by the way!

Onto the TPRC.I used the V8 at the 2010 TPRC not the 2011.I sold it shortly thereafter for a few reasons which I thought at the time were problems with no viable solutions for a fix.

The main problem was it still turned during longer stages as the tension nut became loose and although I can't prove it I swear it changed where the bullet impacted because I was missing where I really thought I should have been nailing stuff.Maybe the way the rifle was tracking back? I don't know.I also had the the legs fall a few times when I put them at the 45* angle.

If there was any way you could incorporate a separate locking mechanism for the tension nut and/or legs I think that would be a big +.I don't want those legs swiveling at all "zero chance" when I don't want them to.

Another suggestion.I use a 9-13" Harris with a tall rear bag.The reason is the taller bipod helps in stages like the sniper hooch for instance and my neck doesn't get so strained having to lay so low like with the 6-9.I'm old,sorry..

With a next generation Atlas if there was a 3 tubes in one leg design so one could quickly get the Atlas even taller that would be fantastic.Separate legs that have to be attached or detached when needed doesn't appeal to me.Just more to add,think about or possibly loose with all the other gear we have to carry with us.

I ran a V8 Atlas at the TPRC on my AICS 2.0 with one of Kasey's Spigot adapters. I definately noticed those extra few seconds it takes to fold the legs from 90 degrees back to flat and vice versa... but then again, that was the first time I had ever done it under pressure. By the end of the match I managed to learn how to quickly move the legs with one hand by squeezing both buttons at once. The atlas was a trooper. I love mine!

CoryT, the collar design was taken from air compressor connectors which see industrial use. My thinking was that based on this origin, and personal observation, the user could always clear the workings of this collar by rotating and/or sliding.

And I wanted the manipulation of the leg to be able to be done with one hand and one hand position. I guess we could go to the push button system seen on the Harris notch legs. But that is orientated which means the legs would need to be made to not rotate.

I wanted to avoid such orientations of controls.

And that last part, I do not follow you there. Sorry.

Heavy Haulin, lol, I know no other way to be. And I'm always ready to do what I can to make using our products a better experience. Nobody likes range day to be an "argument" with the gear so learning the gear prior to is a good thing!

And thanks for the clarification. The new collar design should help in adjusting the leg length. I tried the thumb and index finger to fold the legs up and I believe that would work well with some practice. It is a sad but true tale, there are people out there that have told and demonstrated to me ways it can be used and manipulated, you have now joined that club! Good job!

gugubica, so everybody knows this thumb index finger trick but me??? lol BTW, the new design on the stock collars are in the works. Again, thank you for the inspiration.

Boss, thanks for the clarification. Regarding the "improper shooter training" I was hoping for the Atlas to be a bit more intuitive but I know there is a learning curve based on the design and features it delivers. I appreciate your willingness to "learn" it and I hope there is a benefit realized from your efforts. Please keep me posted.

Do you remember if you pushed a button to move the legs or pulled the legs to move them?

We continue to have people ask for the ability to LOCK the Pan, Cant and legs up, we can do this but really it is a different bipod. And the application I see is F class shooting, not comps where the shooting positions are dynamic. Mayhap I am wrong.

Either way, we will be doing a V10 bipod that will lock, weigh more and not be as compact.

And we can look at doing something to gain length adjustability to the legs without the extensions.

ahh, you had a V7 then.

I used the V7 only 3 times and one of them on a "dynamic" match.

I was used to a Harris with Pod Lock and what I really found anoying on the V7 bipod is that the cant/rotate lock looses very easy and when put the legs out (spread at 90 or 45 angle) they are one leg in front of the other at an angle (the bipod "rotated").

I can live with the cant free design, but every time I put the legs out I have to adjust (rotate) the bipod so they are in a transverse line within the barrel. And it costed me some seconds that I would prefer to spend shooting and not rotating the bipod.

Do the V8 does the same thing?

I have yet to have my cant loosen on my V8.

It did onsome on the V7, but that has been corrected.

I understand competitive time restraints, really I do... But if the 1-2 seconds difference it takes to "rip cord" open your Harris vs deploying your Atlas is going to cost you a stage, than me thinks you were gonna loose anyhow.

I have a slew of Harris bi-pods and one Atlas. There is no negligible difference to me using either of them in regards to deployment. I can use either with great success or great failure.

I will say this though, timed events and hustle are one thing, but this isn't drag racing. If you're in that much of a hurry your prolly jerkin' shots.

LRCampos, How are you?!

I believe what you are saying is that due to the PAN feature, the legs do not stay perpendicular to the bore.

I thought about putting a lock on it but then that too becomes another feature that requires manipulation. I also considered that when shooing off surfaces other than solid, rare did I have both legs "bite" into the dirt evenly. It seems it was one leg better than the other, which resulted in digging the feet into the dirt.

Anyhow currently,the best I can suggest is to observe the legs as you go into position and then set the rifle down to compensate for the leg positions, then just straighten the rifle out as you get into the rifle and pan it into the target. Its 15 degrees one way or the other.

And we can do the V7 to V8 for 49.95 plus 15.00 for international S&H.

I agree with this statement completely but this is not the only issue we were having. Many of the stages were better shot with several up and down deployments of the bipod legs, therefore both deployment and folding of the legs rapidly was beneficial. It's not just swinging them down, but up.

I ran a V8 and did not care of all of the issues which have already been menioned above. This is not to say it is not a great bipod. It is. It says a lot about a company to post a thread about problems with their product and accept the feedback, good or bad.

If I was just shooting F Class I would choose the Atlas, but competitions like these the Harris wins out in my opinion.

Now if we could just get Harris to make their damn rubber feet stationary so they don't spin I would be happy. I have a hell of a time loading my Harris on concrete-type surfaces.

jeepone, Thanks for sharing your experience. I fully understand the leg folding up/down is slower with the Atlas (the method described above definitely speeds up the folding up). I did not understand this;
