Help me choose a LR/Precision Rifle!

I love my BigHorn TL3 action. Barrel swapping takes 5mins (if that). I can buy prefit barrels without sending in my action and they ship to my door. Drops into anything R700 footprint with no issues. Action is smooth and has control round feed and mechanical ejection. I will probably only buy this action from now on to keep things the same. Depending on what stock you want you can be into that for under 4K
The TL3s look like great,a little spendy, but generally you get what you pay for.
Will keep them in mind .... thx

Yes it was. I got to researching the Nucleus action a little more and just had to have it.:p However I blame you and your thread for making me realize my need. At least I'm not a hypocrite, I bought what I recommended, LOL
Ha! Knew it.
I see those Nucleus actions paired with nice barrels on the net. But I’m really liking the 6.5 PRC round ... at least on paper

I’d also look into the Sherman short cartridges.

I’m almost for sure getting a 7SS barrel for my nucleus when I get my expenses reimbursement.

Should make my really far shooting a bit easier than my 260.

1/2 moa at 1000 yards = 5" groups. (y) . Nice.
And with a 308 no less. Im guessing winds under 5 mph?
What do you attribute your accuracy to? Besides great skills, of course. Handloading?

Thanks! I guess three things really..
1) I am meticulous when I reload. Everything must be EXACT.
2) Once the rifle is up to a decent operating temperature, I will count between rounds. Baking each one in the chamber evenly and keeping a consistent barrel temp (which the factory barrel needs desperately).
3) Reading wind. It’s very important to me that before I release the shot, what I feel on the firing line matches what I see through my scope on the target end. As you guessed it was only a slightly breezy day though.
I guess those are the points I stress on the most. Using one heavy ass bullet helps too (given the 20” length and 1:10 twist barrel).

^ This particular load is barely supersonic at 1000. Probably moving at about 1250 fps. However I have found it to be extremely accurate. I haven’t seen any transition issues and I’ve been shooting this load for a good couple years now, and in all kinds of conditions. I have found it to move very predictably. However, the max load of varget for these bullets is 44 gr and I’m only using 42.5. So I do have plans to speed it up and see if I can still get the same kind of accuracy.

If going custom go with a impact action and can get a prefit barrel from a lot of good smiths, but I think you would be better off spending the money on ammo wearing out the barrel on the rpr. Take a few classes and practice, no substitute for trigger time!
I didn’t realize you could use a prefit on an Impact Action. Trying to decide at this time between a TL3 and IP. I will keep it in the 308 family as I already reload for 308 and 260. I prefer the rail not being pinned on IP, I can’t tell you why but prefer the idea of prefits.

I would check out Stuteville precision, they are listed on the impact website, they usually have a few calibers in stock and ready to ship.

I'm in the market for a 6.5 PRC rifle, and Ive created a "wish list" for my rifle.

Ive sent out this list below to about 10 possible vendors. Why so many?
I want this done in less than 6 weeks (Ya, Im praying too!)

I’d like to make a decision on a shop by the end of this week to get on with it.
Im sure there are other qualifies shops out there. If you think I missed somebody that I should not have,
don't hesitate to comment to comment and let me know.

Thx to everyone who chipped in and "baby stepped" :p me along the way!

Budget: under $3500
I’m not married to any particular brand of chassis, barrel, action, trigger or stock.
It looks like there are many very reliable and consistent models out there in my price range.
I'm open to suggestions. But I'm not into experimenting, this needs to be a solid, polished, consistent rifle.

Semi-Custom Sniper rifle (with lapping, etc, normalized barrels, etc)
1. Chassis: want sniper-heavy, not carbon-light, eg MPA, KRG? APAC?
RIGHT- HANDED

2. Stock: want Folding stock ONLY with the usual adjustments and canting ability.
Would like to also mount a an adjustable rear butt stock monopod that can flip 90’ when not in use.

3. Caliber/Chamber: 6.5 PRC only

4. Action: want Bolt action; there are many good ones out there, but of course I want one of the better ones
( Bighorn, Defiance, Surgeon, Curtis, Impact, etc) that is also a great match with the chassis and barrel

5. Trigger: crisp and consistent and can go down to about 1 lb pressure
(eg, Timmey, Trigger Tech, etc—> I’m open to brands, but of course I want high quality and to mate well with the action, chassis, etc)

6a. Barrel/Contour: I understand that 24-26” is pretty standard for 6.5 PRC, and I want a SL/switch lug barrel system that is a heavy/bull barrel
(not carbon- too light) or maybe an M24 or MTU. Would like your recommendations, and we can discuss.

6b. Twist Rate: 1:8 probably, whatever is best for the 6.5 PRC ROUNDS

7. Hand guard - free floating
8. Weight: Prefer 11-14 lbs

9. With a muzzle brake.
10. MOA: Must be 1/2” or better

11. Rails: I have a factory 20 MOA rail on my Ruger. The length of pull is about 13-15”.
But I don’t have enough eye relief, so I had to buy a cantilevered morning not for my NightForce in order to move the scope forward enough to get decent eye relief.
— I won’t be needing any fore end rails near the end of the barrel, since I won’t be mounting any lights or even a bipod at this point (shooting on bag)

If you want to buy someone else's idea of a rifle you have lots of stocks to choose from . Have you thought of a custom hand milled hard wood frame rifles ? not that i have found one for my self yet but there are a few makers out there that do that and the prices are in some cases are less others are more than a pre made stock that looks like what so many others have ? While I cannot really complain about my rpr it still leaves a lot on the table for me as far as looks and feel . but that's my opinion .

If you insist on the bull barrel (as I did), that’s going to require a more expensive action, and I think your price limit is a bit tight for it. $4,000 is more like it. If you find a builder who will use all new parts and build and deliver it for less than $3,500, that’s a bargain.

B-B-B-Barracuda,
I agree. I have an RPR and the replacement shroud is a POS. Looking to replace it with an LRI piece for $60.
As for the wood, I just found this: interesting look! By ARC.

about 1/2 of those vendors have gotten back to me with propositions. range is $3300-4700.
I hear ya, but I start lower $$ than higher $$ !!

Well, I just threw down on a rifle ..... Im so freakin tired of web research, phone calls, vendor lists, rifle lists, etc.

I went to the "Platinum Dealer" list on MPA site, started at the top of the list and just started calling.
Xtreme Guns & Ammo in Texas had a MPA Competition Chassis in 6.5 PRC that checked all my boxes, and for just under $3K.
I don't get the fancy Trigger Tech Diamond, but I get the next best one that goes down to 1 lb.

Here it is: https://xtremegunsandammo.com/shop/...prc-bolt-action-competition-rifle-switch-lug/

I get all these goodies: Curtis Custom Axiom, Folding stock, Switch Lug barrel, Spencer steel barrel, 26" in M24, vertical grip with thumb rest, etc.
She's a black beauty !!! IMO, this is hard to beat for under $3k. Barrel and action are hand-lapped, etc by MPA.
Rifle was built by the guys at MPA, not Xtreme Guns and Ammo.
