I have a 16” SR15 I’m needing optics for. Plan on using it for classes which include some light vehicle work and shoot houses but also plenty of mid range shooting. I was thinking T2 because I’ve used them on m4 pattern with great success. With the flat top I’m not sure if I should be getting with the new way of doing things if there is one. I am very skeptical of lpvo’s because of eyebox but aren’t totally ruling them out. It just should be an option that isn’t fussy because it’s a self defense weapon. Also, I have a mams on a 16” and considering swapping for a KAC three prong pinned and welded for the tighter spaces and less concussion inside shoot houses. Am I screwing mused with that idea? I own now suppressors and don’t plan on ever needing more than a flash hider.

Have T1 ,,plan on NVG next 3 months.
That said,,Steiner PXI 1-4,,is a great choice
Also use a KAC 200-600 rear with a PRI front flip,,kept in upright .Replaced my POF front sight,,that I really enjoy.
Both fronts are HK style full circle style.
I'm old school,,still use a DD FF lite quad rail.
Easy on/off off of accessories.
Pic is before switch over to PRI rail mount flip up

LVPO all the way for a top tier AR (or any AR for that regards). with minimal practice your splits will be just as fast and you'll gain a ton of flexibility for target ID/mid range. what's your budget?

Probably 1500 or so. I’d love to get a 1-8 ATACR if I could swing it. Been liking what I see with the 1-6 from Khales but I’m not sold on the reliability with drops and wear and tear.

Where are you seeing reliability problems?

I did bend the diopter tube on one dropping it off a standing-height workbench onto a concrete floor. Took the impact from the rifle attached to it. Tube still turns, no debris in it, still zeroed, but does have an ugly flat edge on the protruding diopter tube.

Had the same thing happen to a Razor 1-6 when it was knocked off a table by someone else. That one landed on the turrets but did not do anything to the tube.

I've also had a Razor 1-6 and NF NX8 that did need to go back for reticle problems; nothing is infallible.

completely fair point. I’d say the limited lifetime warranty gives me cause for pause but it’s a bullshit excuse because plenty of people on the hide have used it with no issue after the 10 years.

If replicating an RDS is what you want, Kahles, Swarovski, and Vortex have some of the widest FOV and most forgiving eye boxes while the NX8 will get you closest in brightness.

Unfortunately I can't comment on the NF 1-8 or new Razor 1-10.

Pinned 14.5 SR15 makes for an almost perfect carbine I think. I used a warcomp, and didn't find it excessively 'blasty'

FWIW... I run a RDS on many AR's ... but leave enough room on the ass end of the picatinny rail for a QD / flip to the side magnifer.

With both mounted, it can be "bulky".. but useful for my needs.

That way I can just mount it or flip off to the side as desired.

My older eyes appreciate the magnification for the longer distances and more precision shooting... especially with the ACSS reticle equipped RDS's.

I have pinned stuff on the KAC Mod 2 has system but I don’t like it because you can’t service anything with that done. If you gas tube touches your carrier key you’ll be paying a gunsmith to take it apart. Just SBR it.

That said you should have some magnification, be it an Elcan, magnifier or LPVO. I have the first two and the next optic will be a 1-10.

the questions are how is your eyesight, and what is the usage and distance?
If you have excellent eyesight, and if your goal is to hit man size targets at 500 yards and in for self defense, hard to beat a red dot. I have friends who can't see shit past 50 yards, and depend on a lot of magnification for even 50 yards.

Advantage of red dots for self defense classes and application are better field of view, lighter weight, less bulk, and they're better in lower light conditions.

My go to rifle has a t2, my jp 3 gun rifle currently sports a swaro 1-6.

If you decide to go LPVO, in my experience, and I've owned most of them, the khales and swaro 1-6 are hard to beat.

I am not a huge fan of the elcan. I find using an acog rmr combo is lighter and faster.

I’m on the younger side and my vision is pretty good. I have no real perceived need to consistently id targets at 500 yards with this thing. I was kind of thinking lighter weight, easy to run, bump in the night. That’s why the main part of my question was how to mount the irons in relation to a t2. I am just trying to buy once and it seems like the opinion of most is a Kahles 1-6 with some training is functionally just as fast with added benefits.
