Help! Refinishing stock problems

My SKS was the ugly red color with a few blemishes so I decided to re-finish the stock and iron all the dents out. My problem is that there are spots the stain didn't work on. I used a stripper to get the old finish off and made sure all the cosmolene was off. I didn't sand it down though and it seems that the finish was just rubing off like tacky paint. I did sand everything off now down to 600 grit and is ready to try again but I don't want to go through this all over again. I'm using ebony minwax stain and a laquer finish

There could be oil soaked into the wood.I've heard that you can pack the stock in cat litter and heat it in the oven.Draws out the oil so it can be soaked up.Just a suggestion.

Have to agree, read a lot that red colored wood is caused by gun oil..
