Let me preface this by stating that I have shot pistol for years, but have just recently started shooting rifle. Earlier this year after a lot of research, I bought a 18" LaRue OBR, and have been extremely happy with it. I have been shooting it with the iron sights, and am now ready to purchase a scope. I will be using this mainly for target shooting but will probably use it to hunt with at a later time. With practice, I would like to get out to 800 or 1,000 yards target shooting. I was looking at the Leopold Mark 4, but after reading a lot of posts, have decided on a Nightforce. The way I see it, when you are spending that much cash, an extra $400 or so for a Nightforce is well worth it. So, I was looking at the 5.5-22x56 NXS mainly with zero stop and illuminated reticle. It is the same price as the 5.5-22x50, so I figured more light for the same price, why not. I saw a 8-32x56 NXS, but figure that is probably way more magnification than I need. The Benchrest models look interesting as well, but I don't really know the difference except for the MOA I guess, and that you can't get zero stop on them.
Two main questions. Any opinions on the 5.5-22x56 versus the other scopes that I mentioned in terms of what I am using it for. Pros and cons would be helpful. The other question is the reticle. I am stuck on this. I was first thinking mil dot, then TMR with the Leupold, but am now thinking about the MLR versus NP-R1. I know that people say that whatever you are used to is good, but as I am just learning, so I can learn with either one. Any preferences between the MLR versus the NP-R1 for long distance shooting, any pluses or minuses? Any other options on these scopes that I should consider? I figure that I will have this for the rest of my life, so might as well get something that will last.
Any info is helpful.
Thanks.
