First time poster here...been lurking awhile and seem to get more and more confused the more I read. I have pretty much set my budget for optics to $1000(would love nightforce or Us Optics but just cant swing that much coin). So far I'm interested in Sightron SIII, Vortex PST, and Leupold Mark 4...I can get a Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x50 M1 for $970 and am wondering if I should go that route or if there is a better option at this price point? I'm mostly concerned with having a scope that has excellent tracking and nice glass...anything else would be a plus(Mil/Mil,FFP, etc...)

This will be going on a Rem SPS-VS in .308win. Thanks for the Help!

Re: Help with $1000 budget....

optics planet has a review tab that can be helpful. I don't have either of those scopes so I can't offer any other help. SFWA also has a good wesite.

The reason you pay more for a premium scope is not that it works better (although often they do), but it is more durable and there's less chance of getting a bad one.

If you can live with 9x, and I certainly could unless I was shooting comps where I had to read small numbers on small targets at 100-300 yards, the SWFA 3-9x42 FFP is probably the best value.

Re: Help with $1000 budget....

Thanks...I have also considered going with the SS 10x42HD...the rifle has a Bushnell 3200 10x40 right now that I like pretty good. Would the SS line of scopes be a significant upgrade over the Bushy? I'm mostly interested in shooting steel out to 1000yds and grouping from the bench at 100yds...no comps or intense target work.

Re: Help with $1000 budget....

If you are patient you might be able to find a steal on a used scope. I just picked up a NF 3.5-15 X 50 for $1100.

If you are looking for a NIB scope the SS 10HD seems to lead the pack if you can get away with a fixed power scope.

You are on the right track. Yes both the SWFA 3-9x42 or 10X HD are a significant step up from the Bushnell 3200. I use two of the 3-9X42 SS to shoot steel out to 800 yards, (will move up to 1000 when I'm ready) and this is plenty of scope. The 10X HD has parallax adjustments the 3-9X42 does not. The hide has a 10% discount code of SSHIDE when ordering either scope. You might like to read a couple of reviews.

Re: Help with $1000 budget....

I just purchased an IOR 4-14x50 30mm Tactical for $1190 shipped from SWFA.

This scope's optics are simply amazing (far better than any of the ablve listed except possibly the 10x HD SWFA). The illuminated MP-8 dot reticle is outstanding and the 25 MOA per turn elevation knob is good to 800-1000 yards in a single rotation for many long range capable rounds.

Based on your requirements listed you could not be dissapointed in this scope.

Check out some of the reviews by Ilya and compare the IOR glass to NF, S&B, USO and others.

it does not matter which rifle you install this on, as eventually you will get a better rifle and a good scope will "migrate" to the better rifle.

don't have the coin? save your money and wait until you do.

the Leupold MK4 LRT 4.5-14X50 is NOT really a MK4. Leupold "extended" their MK4 series with hunting scopes inorder to boost sales among those who don't know any better. the TRUE MK4 scopes are 3.5-10X M1,M2 & M3, the 10X M3 and the 16X M1.
