HOME DEFENSE: Handgun versus Small Frame AR

I'm 58 years old and have not had to shoot anyone yet. But I do need to be ready to repel a squad of armored up cartel assassins?

LOLWTF

My rifle is locked up with all the others. A handgun will do just fine, which I have on me or very near 24/7
Well the expert advice from the key board veterans seems to vacillate from an M-79 single shot 40 MM grenade launcher to a silenced 22 short AR with multi mags ........some where evolution has made my 357 magnum revolver obsolete on dropping hoodrats and my 6 K plus property taxes are for a crib in the projects . Shocking no one is pushing a 6 mm creep less whatever man bun gun .

i just like the idea of having a belt than I can secure around my waste with all my gear on my waste and i can still use both of my hands and I can always have my belt ready to go. It makes a lot of sense for me from a practicality standpoint. I can keep the 2011 in the safe during the day and use my belt setup for it before I go to bed or I can use the belt setup I have for my g19 conceal carry and just switch from my conceal carry holster to the belt and it has a lot of practicality in that I am pretty much always prepared. I just don't like having a rifle out during the day in case a worker or a technician needed to be in the house during the day.

The reality is I would rather have better situational awareness than an optimized weapon. If it gets that out of hand, "use whatever weapon you can get your hands on that goes bang when you want it to." This stuff doesn't happen when people are planning for it.

If I had to pick it would be a suppressed 5.56 SBR with some type of ammo that had adequate but not too much penetration. It is the easiest to maneuver, shoot well, and have good terminal effects.

Shooting unsuppressed AR's in a CQB setting sucks, even if a full 16" barrel. More importantly, the flash bang of each round going off WILL cause permanent hearing damage that is likely to plague you the rest of your life, and is extremely disorienting for that essential situational awareness. Most of us don't train for CQB on a daily basis and it will be hard enough trying not to shoot our loved ones under extreme duress.

Encouragement for some - build a few interior and exterior wall sections and space 'em out to represent typical room distances....shoot them and test out your thoughts / preferred ammo.....the exercise will give a practical understanding to the limitations on some of the commonly attributed penetration characteristics of various rounds.

I assume any Mikes on my part from any caliber I would pick up will travel through at least one wall, and exterior glass means it goes free range.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I know what a Glock 19 sounds like when fired in my basement without hearing protection.

Nor can I confirm nor deny that I have seen how a 147 grain Speer Gold Dot penetrates drywall and reacts to poured concrete.

I have astigmatism and I had cataract surgery in both eyes, I chose distance lenses. I cannot use irons, I have a couple of Primary Arms prism sites with etched reticles, a 1x on the 9mm AR and a 5x on a 16" 5.56 AR, any reason not to chose a 1x for the 5.56 HD rifle? Better choices with etched reticles? 1x LPVO?

For HD only a 1X something (reflex or prism) is perfect.
