Any advice for treating viral pneumonia at home?

If hospitals get full we home treatment may be the only option.

Any medicines to stock?

My son had pneumonia a few times when he was young. Treatment at the hospital consisted of O2 (cannelure or tent), albuterol, and time. If you are old and/or immune compromised, have a lawyer and a priest on hand...

Ask your doctor, not the internet. Any antiviral medicines that will actually work will also require a prescription to obtain. Get your shot card updated while you’re there as well.

This^^^

I had double bronchial pnuemonia when I was about 38. sickest Ive ever been and lived. Didnt know what it was but it hit me in the middle of building a chimney for a customer. I wanted to finish it for him so kept on working until one day I saw little angles circling my head and figured it was time to go home and go to bed. Laid in bed for three days too sick to eat. Then I met Mr. Death FTF in a vision and knew I had to eat so shoved some bread down my throat with a finger. After about a week I felt good enough to get up and about and went back to work but was weak for a month and a half so finally went to the doc and he told me what I had. Nothing he could do at that point and after a few more weeks I got my strength back.

I think O2 would be good to keep you breathing well.

One of the only OTC options.

Pneumonia can very easily lead to sepsis, so never, ever try to treat it at home when a hospital is an option. I get it, this conversation is about when they're not an option, but there is so little that can be done that you really can't prepare for it. It is pretty unlikely you will get a doctor to prescribe an antiviral as a "just in case" option, only if you're presently exhibiting symptoms. Online drug options are sketchy and more often than not are not the real medication, instead fillers and any ingredient other than the real thing.

Oh yeah, @Redmanss is right.

Sepsis kills a lot of people every year. Early treatment often can keep you from having severe sepsis (which is when your organs are effected and you can lose digits or parts of limbs secondary to the life-saving treatments).

I helped write the job description for our Sepsis Coordinator 3 years ago when they were bolstering our program. I have a little knowledge....?

My though is if SHTF and there Is no space in the hospitals.

People might be forced to deal with Corona virus at home.

This is already playing out in China.

Is there anything over the counter that is worth procuring?

Not a doctor. Not sure about albuterol but I would be wary about the steroids with influenza The evidence using them at least in critical patients had been mixed, some studies shown that patients with steroids have worse outcomes. If you want to do more reading to on Google scholar and search pneumonia and steroids or look for the cochrane review on the subject. Also I have been working on a research project that prelim results suggest that oral systemic steroids are no bueno in outpatients with influenza..

Am a doctor. Steroids appear to worsen outcomes in flu and are not recommended.

What specifically about pneumonia? I ask because of the link below.

Yes, for bacterial pneumonia we don’t currently know the answer for sure, and there are people running around trying to say that steroids help. I’m not convinced yet by what is out there. We shall see.

If you look historically people in medicine have always loved steroids and wanted to find that they help all sorts of things, and most of this hasn’t panned out except for really treating immune-related things (asthma, COPD, transplant rejection, autoimmune stuff).

for viral pneumonia everything we have seen says they are bad.

They treated the Spanish Flu at home with baking soda- no kidding. 1/2 tsp every 2 hours on day 1 four times that day, then three times day 2, 2 times day 3, and once a day after that. Alkalizing the body prevents disease from growing. Lugols Iodine sold more than all items at the apothecary combined before the advent of antibiotics. We seem to have forgotten about how useful both are. I actually make my own Liposomal Vitamin C but you can buy it already made. Its the equivalent of a high dose Vitamin C IV and kills all sorts of nasty stuff.

Dont get pneumonia. Best plan.

@BoilerUP - I couldnt make a general recommendation. Albuterol use should be decided by a doctor who knows all your history and meds. Its generally pretty safe and a commonly part of the treatment. But it alone isnt going to fix a bacteria that is growing in your lungs.......

if you do get sick, stay hydrated. Deep breathing and coughing exercises are good if you get the respiratory crud to help keep things “busted up” and the alveoli from sticking shut vs opening.

There is no one easy answer.

A long term plan of keeping one’s self healthier by good eating, exercise, no tobacco, moderate alcohol, and sleeping adequately daily helps.
Reading up on general “home remedies” and the basic treatments to combat illness is also good.

I say bacon at least once a week, a little whiskey, and sex at least 3 times a week will keep a man much healthier because a mind at peace boosts the immune system.
And yes, I am happy to tell your wife that too.....

Google 'Alkaline diet foods' and be ready to learn some valuable stuff. One easy way to keep the body alkaline is grapefruit seed extract, bailable in any good healthfood store or pharmacy or online. Thats not a substitute for good diet, just an aid.

Large amounts of chlorella algae is how I do it. The only food that has all vitamins and minerals to boot to the point its what NASA plans to grow for long term space missions as a food source. Great stuff for detox as well but it does alkalize the body. Have to make up for all the red meat and coffee somehow-

But that involves staying healthy, which is tough to do when I'm spending 12 hours/day on the internet. Any other options?

This seems like the best medical advice ever offered on this forum.

As a side note, I don't have any idea if Albuterol helps with pneumonia, but it turns me into an animal on a bicycle for about 90-120 minutes. It's good shit.

The point of this thread is be prepared to deal with Coronavirus at home.

Hospitals may become completely overwhelmed.

Is there anything over-the-counter that may be useful?

Not a medical professional, just a dumbass airplane driver...but:

What about use of oral steriod like prednisone, inhaled steriod like flovent, and/or bronchodialators like albuterol?

Maybe this dumbass airplane driver wasn't that off base?

Another doctor here--NOT OFFERING MEDICAL ADVICE (just summarizing literature as of this date).
1) Prevention--get enough sleep and eat a healthy diet--low sugar, starch, and processed food; high green vegetables--the darker and more bitter the better. Vitamin C 1,000 mg once or twice a day, zinc glycinate (sometimes called "chelated") 60 mg once a day, and turmeric 300-600 mg once a day--all safe unless severe kidney or liver disease. Selenium glycinate--YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR LEVEL BEFORE STARTING IT. If your level is in the upper half of the reference range, you don't need it and it probably won't help. If your level is below this, it may help prevent COVID-19--your dose will depend on your level.
2) Monitoring--get a no-touch forehead thermometer and a pulse oximeter. Get baselines of both. If you develop a temperature 2F over your baseline or over 100.5F or cough or shortness of breath, call your doctor. If your O2 saturation falls below 92%, call your doctor.
3) Home treatment--stay hydrated (Gatorade [regular, none of the varieties] or Pedialyte--these should be kept in every home). Breathing exercise: take five deep breaths in, holding your breath each time for five seconds. On the sixth deep breath, do a big cough. Repeat that cycle once. Do this often. Lay flat on your stomach as much as you can otherwise. Your doctor may prescribe an albuterol inhaler (or xopenex--like albuterol but does not increase heart rate). It is unlikely that he/she will prescribe an anti-viral or steroid for home use (there is conflicting literature, but both may improve outcome in severely ill, hospitalized patients). There is also conflicting literature on hydroxychloroquine as preventative and/or treatment.
4) Hospitalization--all of the above plus O2 and IV therapy in an intensely monitored situation. Cooperate as best possible to try to avoid need for intubation and artificial ventilation. Outcome with artificial ventilation is much poorer than without. This is likely due to being so sick as to need artificial ventilation, but artificial ventilation itself may play a role.
Please note that I am NOT OFFERING MEDICAL ADVICE (just summarizing literature as of this date).

Pneumonia is usually bacteria. Hence why I usually treat it with zithromax(z-pack). If its viral treat your symptoms. Tylenol for fever and OTC meds for other symptoms, if you are treating at home and no access to hospital or a doctor. Plenty of fluids, usually an electrolyte drink. Plenty of rest also.
