Just received this ammunition with this lot number. Anyone have any expereince with this lot number? I know a few have said there was some lots out there hotter then others so I just wanted to see if anybody has this lot and what velocities they are seeing, along with barrel brand and length.

If anyone has pulled and weighed charge for this lot number would be appreciated as well.

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232

Recently I ordered a 200 round case and recieved the Lot # listed above. I finally got around to shooting it as I indicated in a few other threads regarding 6.5 Creedmoor info.

The gun is a Surgeon 591 with a 21" Rock Creek barrel.

    I chrono'd 6 round and got
    -2856
    -2826
    -2829
    -2806
    -2819
    -2838

I imediately thought that was high, but I was on steel at the average velocity. Ended up tailoring it an average of 2800 even at 460 yards.

Fastex500 pulled a few rounds for me and he got 42.2,42.2, and 42.4 for the charges. Bullets were 140.2,139.8, and 140.2.

Very sad now becuase I can no longer get the same lot number. This Lot shot under 1/2 MOA at a hundred and MOA or less on steel.

OK boys and girls... here's some photo proof. This was FAST and accurate ammo!

Just to clarify, powder charge weight doesn't mean anything. As I have posted many times before, Hornady loads to a specific velocity/pressure spec. Just because it doesnt come in at 41.5grns as the box says doesn't mean it's hot. The load is adjusted for different lots of H4350 that are used in production. Some lots might need more powder than the original lot that was used to spec the load when developed.

So even if I get a LOT that has say, an average of 41.7 grains then it will or should achieve the same velocity? Do they load to peak pressure or pressure under the curve? If they load to peak then in theory I figure I could achieve the same velocity with the lower charge but if it's pressure under the curve it seems I will no doubt have lower velocities with a lower charge if pressure under the curve for both lots is equal.

Does anyone know where to find this ammo in stock? Every online retailer I know of is sold out, and google didn't come up with anything.

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

I'm wondering the same thing. I just had a rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor but I'm wondering if I made a mistake. Can't find 140 Amax in stock anywhere. Well, not in decent quantities and at reasonable prices anyway.

What is the problem at Hornady? I can't imagine that demand for 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition suddenly skyrocketed.

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

Interesting. I've been loading for my new creedmoor and found It likes 42.5g of H4350 with the 140 amax. I've got a 24" Bartlien but I'm not quite breaking 2800 fps though. My 8# can of H4350 is getting low so I need to buy a few new ones and see what it likes with the new lot.

I've actually pushed it up to 43g with the 140 vld hunting and it shoots that load the best going 1/4-1/2 moa and clocking 2810 with no pressure signs. I hope to find a load with the Amax that shoots that good because of the price difference in bullets, and the Amax gives a better pop on rock chucks too.

I guess I called right after election and the dude said they had a "bunch". Like they had enough not to run out...I figured there would be a run and bought some. Gonna be disappointed if this ends up like the last time...really expected the manufacturers to be prepared for the run.

I ordered a case from Cheaper Than Dirt and they replied the same thing, they had about 3000 rounds. Two weeks later...sold out. I lucked out and ordered about 5 cases, unfortunately I got three different lot numbers but beggers cant be choosers. You might have to pay a little more but McCourt Munitions will load you what ever you need in new Winchester brass and his stuff shoots!

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

I would expect a run on .308 or .223, your common military rounds, but not 6.5 Creedmoor? After I shoot the factory loads I plan to reload the cases so I would like to get a couple hundred rounds from the same lot. Just ordered a couple hundred from Midway. Expected delivery date 12/17. Hopefully they will all be from same lot number.

I didn't know Winchester made 6.5 Creedmoor brass. New to reloading so I have to ask. How does Winchester brass compare to Hornady?

You'll be waiting a long time for that November 31 date.

I've been on this earth 52 years and still haven't seen a November 31st. Seen meteors, three comets and an attempted tethered satellite, missed the Rapture three times and counting, but never seen that date arrive.

Sorry about the typo, meant 10/31.

I ended up cancelling the order a couple of days after it got pushed back to December 17.

I got two different lot numbers from pv which sort of disappointed me. I figured they would know better...next time I will.

It is has been a hard time finding the 140AMAX. I have a 6.5mm Creedmoor build, that is about to be completed, so I need to start buying some STUFF. I ended up getting the 120 AMAX...all I need are the cases to get started reloading, and as for waiting for the sale from Midway, that date will keep on changing forward as the old date comes due. I have played that game on numerous occasions and it is frustrating. I just wiped out Palmetto Arms on the 120 AMAX ammo and they only had 8 boxes left.

Same situation here. Been watching items go in and out of stock for about 3 months steady. I ended up buying dies from sinclair, but the micrometer bullet seating stem from Midway.

Check Creedmoor Sports for stuff too. I've never dealt with them, but they don't show "out of stock" on everything...I'd call first.

Weird....I ordered 200 rounds of 140 amax at the sale price last night and I've already got my tracking #

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

I decided to try the Hornady Superformance 129gr SST load while waiting for my shipment of 140gr AMAX to arrive, since a local store had some on the shelf. The SST bullet has a G1 BC of 0.485 according to Hornady, and with a 100m zero it took 7.1mils to reach 979m with my rifle. I initially entered their estimated velocity of 2950fps in two different ballistic calculators (iPhone KAC BulletFlight and Horus Kestrel), both of which gave me an elevation estimate of ~8.5mils (ended up missing almost 1.5mils high). I had to bump up the velocity to right around 3150fps in both calculators to account for the 7.1mil elevation hold. It grouped a little over 1MOA during zeroing.

Unless the 140gr AMAX load has a similarly underestimated muzzle velocity, it won't really have a ballistic advantage over the SST. Software shows 1.7 vs 1.8mil wind hold for a 10mph wind at 979m, with a 1.5mil larger elevation hold. Guess I'll find out the truth this weekend.

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

How will it have a ballistics advantage versus a bullet that has a BC of .585 and is heavier?

The SST may have a flatter trajectory but even if the 140 Amax is slower the BC and weight will make a huge difference in the wind, trust me.

The only problem I for see if you run the Superfirmance is spikes in pressure in warmer climates. I would stick with the Amax, accuracy SHOULD be better (not for certain) and the Amax will still do it's job on game if you are hunting with it. If you are target shooting you always want to stay with a more accurate projectile. If your SST is 1 MOA at 100 but the Amax is shooting 1/2 MOA of better at a hundred you may think that's not a significant difference but when you start stretching it out the it will show you the difference.

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

A 129 SST at 3150 shows 3.1 MOA drift for a 10 mph full value wind.

140 Amax at 2850 shows a 2.9 MOA drift for a 10 mph full value wind.

Just as the above stated, it will own the target in energy as well. Let us know how each works out. Let me know what lot number/s you receive as well, if you don't mind.

    Re: Hornady 6.5 Creed 140 Amax Lot# 3121232 ***Update

My 140 AMAX showed up, lot number is 3120878.

All I meant to say above is that given equal accuracy, for target shooting I'd rather use the significantly flatter shooting round that requires only a touch more wind hold. If the AMAX load turns out to be more accurate and/or is close in elevation to SST, then the above goes out the window. Either way I'll know by the end of the weekend, and will also post results.

Also, heavier or lighter doesn't mean anything when comparing BCs, since by definition a coefficient is a dimentionless quantity. Meaning a 1000gr bullet with a BC of .5 will have the same trajectory and wind drift as a 100gr bullet with a BC of .5 so long as both are launched at the same velocity. You can check this easily by adjusting the bullet weight up or down without changing any other values in any ballistic calculator, you'll note it has no effect on your ballistic data aside from kinetic energy.
