House caught fire yesterday

Got off work yesterday and came home to my street shut down and the fire dept putting a fire out at my house. We had very high winds and a tree fell on my power line to the house, which set it on fire. Only my dogs an cat were inside and they are ok (thankfully). My once pristine 1993 Mustang was damaged and the house has extensive damage on one side which includes the garage, utility room, kitchen and office. Smoke and water damage throughout and the roof and attic are toast. I'll know more later today when there's daylight and after I talk to my insurance companies. I'm basically living in a hotel for the time being.

It sucks but I'm glad my pets are alive. They were near the fire and in the next room. I had to tell the fire dept where they were so they could find them.

Dammit that just sucks! Hope you get help from the insurance companies. Fight 'em for every dollar. Glad you, yours, and the pets are okay though.

I have to say, when I think I got an issue I can't stand, I find it's pretty minimal in comparison to what some are about to go through.

If it made the news you need to get a "disaster" team out there ASAP. They will or at least should put up a fence around the home.

A home 4 houses down from my brother burnt to the ground, I mean all the way to the ground. It made the news, disaster company was there before the firefighters left. Fence was up in an hour or so.

This was on a quite little dead end street. Maybe sees 15 cars a day including the postman. That night a couple LEO were sitting in there cars all night about 50 yards away, fire truck stayed all night in case of a flare up (which it did at 2am and fire hoses were frozen).

My brother said the street was packed with cars all night. He talked to the LEO in the morning and they said they arrested 5 people who tried to get over the fence and were going to loot the ashes. LEO said they quit counting after 200 cars but they estimated over 400 cars drove by in 12ish hours. They ran plates on all of them and about 20% where from addresses over 70 miles away, 3 were over 110 miles.

LEO said news coverage more than quadruples the number of people who come to see stuff like this. Most just Gawkers, but you don't drive an hour each way just to gawk at a burned out building.

Sorry to hear, glad your pets are fine. You mind me asking how your boom sticks faired? Sounds like if you store them in the basement they were away from the flames but might still have water to contend with. Fire is right up there with theft for me in what I fear about regarding my firearms.

It truly is great to see the offering of help, by sincere folks who mean it. I have no idea how your insurance works 'down there', but what I've learned the hard way, up here is that you now have to 'mitigate your losses'... to which they mean that you are responsible for any further damages from this point on. Not them. And that requires site protection/security.

As I understand it, with you living in a hotel now, and if you came to the house one day and all the copper tubing has been ripped out, the insurance doesn't cover that. (this is how the adjuster explained it to me)

If ya'll have a different system, I don't know. But cover your ass, and check your status. Blessings on ya', and knee-mail sent. Hug your animals.

I would hire an adjuster that will deal with the insurance company. Even though they take a chunk of the settlement, you will get more than if you deal with them yourself

I seen this happen on another forum I used to frequent. The post on that forum got used against the guy in debates with Insurance company. It got crazy.....the guy finally came out and said "my attorney told me not to post anymore about this".....or something along those lines. I think they even pointed the arson finger at him. I don't recall all the details though. Probably 10 years ago, if not more!

Thanks all. I've been running around all day and taking phone calls from my homeowners and collector car insurance. The place was locked down pretty tight and I asked my neighbors to look after the place and call if they saw anything suspicious.

Unfortunately my insurance won't cover living expenses so my wife and I will have to fend for ourselves while still paying the mortgage. It's going to be tough for quite awhile, and I'll reach out if I need help.

Just saw this. Sorry to hear this. Fire can be devastating. I spent some weeks in the hospital after being in a fire when I was 20. It sounds like you’ve got most things under control but could use some assistance with hotel costs.

We are trying to find alternate living arrangements with friends.

The initial estimate for damage is $40-$50k

As far as living expenses, I apparently didn't have the added coverage for living expenses. I didn't even know that was an option otherwise I would have made sure I had it. Shitty apartments here are more than my mortgage, and most don't allow pets. Extended stay hotels are still $90-100 per day.

Also look into whether they cover upgrades on building code. It sounds like I may get screwed there. Basically means that they aren't obligated to pay to have the repairs brought up to code since my house is old enough (1955) where the codes have changed.

I'm looking at hiring a one stop restoration and repair company that also does insurance estimates. So we'll see where they are at as far as damage.
