I just went to the optometrist this weekend and my eyes have gotten worse since my last checkup...

I went from a L(-4.5), R(-4.25) to a L(-5.0), R(-4.75). Sucks. But the good news is that with the new prescription, my corrected vision is slightly better than 20/20.

The bad news is that now the reticles are blurry on all of my scopes. I am going to have to adjust the diopters, which is a minor pain.

I was wondering who else on the Hide has crappy vision... and how you shoot with it. I correct with contact lenses. Has anyone here had corrective surgery and how did it turn out?

Re: How bad are your eyes?

Well, my vision is 15:20 in my good eye and somewhere around 300:20 in my bad eye.

Corrective surgery? One guy I know (older guy) got it and he was worse afterwards, to be honest it really screwed him up. Went from being slightly farsighted to having the visual acuity of a drunken mole. Another person I know (friend's girlfriend) went from being 400:20 (I tell him her not being able to see was the reason she went out with him) to being 50:20, but that was several years ago and she is getting worse again, needs thicker glasses. Unless your glasses look like coke bottles I don't know that surgery is worth it.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My sister got Lasik done about 15 years ago and is needing a touch up now. It would certainly be liberating to wake up and not have to reach for a pair of glasses. At least once a week, I will forget to find my glasses before taking my contacts out and be completely helpless wandering around feeling countertops where I would normally set them.

Mundane things like going on a camping trip suck because I either have to wear glasses, which fog up when I hike and are generally uncomfortable, or tote along cleaning solution, saline solution, a lens case, and then figure out how I am going to sterilize my hands. People with good eyes don't know how good they have it.

On the other hand, this new prescription is great. It really makes a difference.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My wife had lasik about 7 months ago. She spent a week in bed with severe pain. For a week we werent sure if she was going to be able to see and neither was the very well respected eye doc that did it. Said only 2 other people ever had the same issue she had. BS.....She wished she never would have done it and the entire time she couldnt see kept saying glasses arent that bad..

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I run about negative 10 in each eye. I cannot see the big "E" on the eye exam chart. I think the last time I had such a modest prescription was in high school. As a practical matter, my poor eyesight has not had any effect on my shooting because with contacts I correct to better than 20/20.

I'm waiting until they can grown an entire new eyeball before I get lasik. But, that being said the bulk of people I know have had great luck with lasik. One of my friends did have dry eye problems.

So what about now? Did it take? That is scary to potentially lose it all. For that reason, a lot of doctors try to do one eye at a time. Sorry for you and your wife...

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'm nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other, I had a severe eye injury in my right eye over 20 years ago and have had cataract surgery.

It makes it fun when you have to shoot strong side, then weak hand side with a scope, a fast focus eyepiece really helps!

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I can see pretty well with my contacts, had them for years. -4.50 in rt eye and astigmatism in left.

My problem is my pistol sight are one big blur, scopes are ok that's why I got out of the pistol game and into precision rifle.

The pistol COF's in tactical matches don't require bulls eye precision.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I have to have corrective lens to read but am okay otherwise. If I leave my glasses on when looking thru a scope if messes me up. That's shooting righ handed. I don't even think about it left handed as I have a lazy left eye. I can see w/ it but that's it. Just see. An old full bird Col. down at Ft McClellan told me in 1979 to take care of my right eye cause there was nothing they could do for my left one as far as correcting it. So if I were to ever loose the sight in my right eye I would just have to shoot w/ a shotgun and hope for the best...lol.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My eyes are so bad I have a hard time with reticle focus. very few scopes have enough neg adjustment for me to see well. Been thinking about PRK but as of yet I'm undecided on it.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

The image we see in the scope is "in the scope" so it is a near vision image (I believe this is right, correct me if I am wrong). Something around a foot away?

I am somewhat far sighted so I wear my reading glasses for shooting. My far vision is fine without correction. I need the close up ability my glasses give me to adjust the scope and other tasks at hand. It's not very convenient switching my glasses back and forth (I wear sunglasses the rest of the time) but that is what I do. Not sure what others do.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I had PRK and their are pros and con to eye surgery.
Pros
No Glasses!
My eye sight is perfect
I can buy sunglasses anytime anywhere

cons
Wanted to rip my eyes out for the first week.
Every now and then when I wake up my adjust take a second to adjust.
Weird dryness every now and then.

But I don't regret it, love not wearing glasses

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'm 20/24 and 20/26. I have worn glasses ever since my eyes went from 20/10 and 20/15 when I was around 35. I figure I gotta wear safety glasses for shooting anyhow, so I'll deal with it. I do pretty well in practical rifle assault type matches, but age hits me harder than vision. In the sniper type matches where there isn't too much jump up and run stuff, I do really well. Adjusting the scope reticles isn't a big deal for me. Hell, you gotta adjust the parallax anyhow, so why not set the reticle focus first?

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'm somewhere in the neighborhood of -4.5 in both eyes. I don't really see it as a problem (pun intended). I just point my rifle in the direction I think my target is supposed to be at the range and hope I don't shoot the guy next to me (LOL). Seriously, I'm just fortunate that it's still fully correctable (contact lenses). It also gives me a valid reason to vehemently dislike anyone claiming a 1-4x scope is more than enough scope for 600yd.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

Im +7.0 and +7.5. Glasses can be a bit of a pain shooting and hunting. the shame thing is none of the major sunglasses manafactuers make a decent heavy duty every day wear wrap round prescription frames. that would eleviate some of the annoyance

Try Oakley, before I got surgery I had them make some ballistic rated sunglasses. Not cheap but beats inserts

Re: How bad are your eyes?

Im short sighted. I hate wearing glasses out in the field for hunting, but I need to otherwise I wont see game at long distances.

Will probably arrange a check up soon and get some contacts.

I want to try laser.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My right eye is -1.75 -1.25 110 and my left is -2.75 -1.25 070 with astigmatism in both. Not sure what all that means but I really hate contacts and glasses. I guess they are better than not seeing but only by a little. I wish there was a sure fire way to have your eyes fixed. My dad had one method done(lasik I think) and my brother had what ever the military does before he deployed. They both are happy with their results. I am still kinda iffy about it if there is a negative side effect to something I get it every damn time. The Cipro I had to take last month is still kickin my ass.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

Blind as a bat until I had Lasik.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'm -7.5 and -6.5; useless without my contacts/glasses. I use glasses to get to/from bed, and that's about it; the rest of the time I'm wearing contacts. The draw of Lasik is strong, but the downsides if things go pear-shaped are so severe that I can't quite get myself to do it at this point...

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'll stick with my glasses. Granted I don't have a very strong prescription yet, but consider the following:

1. Wear sun glasses when outside and when shooting anyway. Really don't ever get away from the glasses issue even with surgery or contacts.

2. Probably the most interesting - you ever notice that when you go in for an eye exam or other eye appointment, that the doctors and techs all still just wear glasses? I figure if contacts or surgery was "all that" then you'd seem more docs and techs without glasses. Every office I've ever been in, yup, you guessed it, they have glasses, every single one of them.

3. Over time I can buy many pairs of glasses for what a disposable contacts perscription or surgery costs.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My optometrist that I am using know thinks outside of the box. He says that a significant portion of the people that do the surgery have some complication. When I started with him about 6 months ago, I was about -4.25 in both eyes. I am no longer wearing contacts, only stress relieving lens when I do up close work. We are doing something called orthokeratology, which is basically hard lens that reshape the cornea like the surgery does. You can read all about it online. The other approach that we are using in combination is called visual training which teaches the brain and eyes to work together. You can find more information about that by going to http://www.visiontherapysolutions.net/ They have a list of providers on the site, so you might be able to find one in your area that doesn't just want to just keep upping your prescription.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I am -7.5 in both eyes. Legally blind without contacts. Without them everything from 12" on out is a blur.

Paul, I'm with you, I'll stick with contacts. Even with the slim chance something goes wrong with the surgery, if it does go wrong, it goes way wrong.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I am -.75 in one eye and +.75 in the other, with astigmatism... Makes shooting support side transitions a little wonky sometimes but it depends on the day it seems, some days I barely notice it and other days I have to really focus on getting a clear support side reticle.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

Used to be 20-200 right eye, and 20-400 left eye; got the surgery done and ended up with two benefits. First, my eyes corrected to 20-10 in each eye. Additionally, the surgeon noted that my eyes dilate to 8mm, and he was afraid I would have issues with glare, so he removed my natural lenses and inserted prosthetic lenses that have an anti-glare coating. So, I've had better than average night vision, but couldn't see well enough to take advantage of it prior to my surgery.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My vision is around +3 to +4. All my glasses, including for driving and shooting are magnifiers. VA provides me with 2 pairs every two years, one for reading and once for distance. Normally, it would be one pair of bifocals, but I absolutely can't use them, so they make me one of each.

I use less expensive scopes, and they seem to work fine. I sometimes consider the possibility that with my vision, dropping large bucks on expensive glass may not be an effective use for said bucks. If it's the opposite, I don't have the large bucks, so the consideration becomes academic anyway.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

My eyes are horrible. Worst part is they change so offten. Been trying to get my contact prescription correct for over 6 months. Eyes keep changing around a bit. Been that way for years now. Really makes shooting a pain some days. Some days they are great. Never get to 20/20 anymore. Here is really bad part, I am only 32.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

Just wanted to throw this out there to you all. We have had a few customers over the years that have had some pretty bad eyesight and have bordered on not having enough diopter adjustment in our standard eyepiece. We can set the eyepiece so that you can have a range of diopter adjustment that can be used as your eyesight gets any worse. No extra charge on a custom build, just ask for it.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

mine are a real pain for hunting. im nearsighted by just a bit. i see much better(like 20/15) corrected but it gives me headaches if i weart em very long. cant seem to shoot at all while wearing glasses makes sight picture fuzzy. so i end up wearing glasses until i see a target then pull them off and shoot, not real handy.

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'm a 2.75 in my right eye and a 1.90 in my left. Without correction, the reticle is too fuzzy to use. With my contacts, it is fine as long as my contacts don't get twisted. I have astigmatisms so my contacts are weighted and have to stay lined up right. I can't shoot with glasses cause I can't seem to get a proper cheek weld! I'd love to have corrrective surgery, contacts are a pain in the ass!!

Re: How bad are your eyes?

I'm 9.50 in both eyes. The problem when you get to that level they don't make diopters that match your prescription exactly. In my experience they are broke down in .25 steps. As a result of this I choose to see far (9.50), or see close better(9.25). I have looked into lasik surgery and the first place said I wasn't a canidate. I guess I need another opinion. I have had several friends that have had great success with lasik. I would like to have it done and be finished with contacts, glasses and the rest of the bullshit! goodluck on keeping great vision- it's worth it's weight in gold! Rhtur
