My kids and I are learning practical long-range rifle together. Just a casual, fun-with-dad basic skill set.
We're already pretty experienced shooters, and the kids have good familiarity with windage and elevation corrections to 550 yards (local steel silhouette matches).
We want to lairn mil-dot ranging. We got some FFP mil/mil scopes. We're metrically challenged, but we understand feet and yards quite well.
So, how big is stuff?
When you estimate the size of an object for the purpose of mil/dot ranging, do you estimate it's size in yards or fractions thereof, or is there some other commonly used trick?
Does anyone have a relevant pdf or link or database they'd like to share (sizes of various common objects on earth)?
Stuff like small and large game animals, small car, big car, semi trailer lengths, small windows, big windows, doors, car windows, house heights, common bldg heights, airplanes, typical tree heights, traffic lights, street lights, billboards, common fence post spreads, etc etc.
The more the merrier.
Not because we're psychos.
Rather, because having a good understanding of basic underlying information and knowledge is part of learning the basics of a craft.
As a parting example, my kids have a small amount of experience in 3-gun and uspsa. Also piano, saxophone, guitar, welding, auto mechanics, good manners, skiing, snowboarding, and yhec. We didn't specialize in 3-gun, and we won't be specializing in lr rifle, but we do want the full picture.
Link, email, IM, or fax.
Thx!
