How can I tell if I hit a steel target 800-1000yds away?

yea...real time when im shooting, i dont feel like i can see the bullets cut paper because the rifle is still moving backwards and then rocking back forward...i see them after the gun recoils and settles out...my vision is really good (lasik), but maybe my brain doesnt "see" that fast? i can definitely self spot at 100 yds because thats how i get new rifles/scopes on paper, i just shoot at the dirt and adjust from there

i have a 22creed barrel for my AI and if i could see it with anything, it would be that...#7 HV contour and it doesnt move at all, ive just never recorded shooting with it

this video is a braked 6.5 creed and shooting off dirt...much easier to stay on target

For sure dirt is much easier to self spot up close, the impact lasts longer and are way bigger than a little black dot. That is how I get on paper also. Thank you for the clarification. As I said to someone else, saying I have seen it and saying, I see it every shot are different. I have been shooting mostly rimfire and air rifle lately. Its easy to see with a 22lr, might be impossible with a springer air rifle. Makes me want my PCP air rifle back.

I mean up close with the springer. It can be easy or hard to spot 100y impacts with a .177 air rifle. You have plenty of time though.

I can see new splatter on the targets after some of the shots. But only after the rifle settles enough to make it out. Do you want me to frame by frame the video and show you how fast 1/10 of a second is and what is visible on the screen at that time? This is about target reaction and time. Remember you said white paper was the easiest to do this with. This is a splatter target in the video. A splatter target gives you almost 3 times the reaction as a single bullet hole. A tiny hole being made in paper is a tiny reaction that is very hard to see unless you are on at least 10x and the rifle is very still. More mag means easier to see but you need to be more still.
Again, this is about target reaction and time, not recoil management.

As I said 100 posts ago, sure you may could see it in real time with a rimfire or mayyyybe a 223 with a brake (probably not though)where the rifle does not move anyway, but you could also do that with a pellet gun. In that case just go shoot benchrest pellet gun and get praise from them.

Edit, I wrote the pellet gun part before I saw that you shoot mostly rimfire and pellet gun lol.

Couple of things.....
1, What in the AF does this have to do with anything?
2. Running the bolt fast is not the hard part of that. Picking and painting a target that quickly is the hard part of that. Running the bolt would prob make it a bit easier because he comes off the scope for a split second to pick his next target.

I really struggle being able to spot impacts on steel, or my misses. I also can NEVER hear my impacts, whether at 600 or 1000+. I don't know if it is the wind, or that I am just too good at putting in my earplugs (I only wear foamies, muffs give me a headache and I can't afford electronic plugs)... so seeing it is the only way. I only have a 10x scope on my rifle, which I think is the biggest part of my problem. Telling the difference between barely high or barely low or barely right or left is tough when you get a big puff of dust that's getting blown by the wind.

10x is fine. Especially when the sun is out, there won’t be much mirage. You have to get used to holding a steady sight picture on target, staring at it and making note of any of the subtle changes in the view. It’s something you get used to. For hanging targets, you should be able to see the reaction pretty easily unless we are talking about a heavy 36” gong.

Lots of steel doesn’t make a ding sound, especially the hanging smaller pieces. It’s more of a “whack” sound that can be masked by the environment. You have to know what you are listening for.

It can be tough depending on caliber and conditions. I stayed on 12x last time I was out to 1500 because mirage was so bad that is the only way I could see. I could still see impacts and splashes as long as mirage wasn’t boiling. If it’s windy at all or if there are other shooters it can make hearing an impact very difficult.

I only run higher end electronic muffs because it helps me hear everything way better...I never run below 15x unless it’s a really close (inside 400 yds) or really fast and big targets...I don’t use the scope to find targets, I look over the top so I dont usually need the wider FOV to transition

I have tried to run low mag before but it’s harder to see things clearly and it’s harder for my right eye to focus on the reticle (I’m left eye dominant and shoot right handed)...also on movers if I zoom out too much it’s hard for me to focus on the tiny reticle and hit my mark...position stages I’m usually ~15-20x and prone, I’m at 20-25x...imo it helps a ton to see everything in better detail, especially on edge hits

I’m also not a small guy @ 6’5 240 so I can absorb a little more recoil that most naturally...I’d rather zoom in and manage it, than zoom out and not be certain of what I see

Are you painting your targets? If not, spray them white. You can see a hit on white pretty clearly

Possibly. 600 is close enough to see hits on steel especially if it’s swinging. Last week I was shooting an unpainted 8” plate at 600 on about 12x and I could see the hit very easily. Definitely more challenging on fixed steel with a small caliber

I was wondering more about how much reaction was happening at the target. Past 800 and 223 impacts become very hard to see. I see my 6.5 impacts pretty easily at 1500 as long as conditions are good and steel is painted.

I just wanted to share my experience with this from yesterday. I had my 18x18 inch target painted in glossy white at 700m. There was a fair bit of mirage I could see the target but not clearly. Wind from 3:30-4 at 3mph average. I could not hear or see any impacts with my 12x swfa scope. I couldn't tell if the plate was moving or not with mirage. I fired 5 shots drive down to target to see only one had hit VERY Low on plate. Went back adjusted velocity in my calculator and added a few clicks up fired another 5 shots again not hearing or seeing anything. Drive back down all 5 shots hit still low but grouped 6.25 inches

I tried calling shots from dust impacts but I'm shooting on flat ground and with the mirage I thought I might have had 2 hits based off dust in the second 5 shot group but was actually 5.

Anyway with heavy mirage spotting hits on plate is impossible for me with a freshly painted paint and I cannot tell if the target is swinging on not as it's too blurry to tell.
