I would think that cops "back then" actually knew the dangers that came with the job and weren't afraid to get a few cuts and bruises every now and then without feeling the need to go for their gun anytime they felt the slightest bit nervous.

im no police officer...but its never ever shoot first. Its a dog for fuck sakes. I have really great dogs, however if you come into their home (my home) you are suspect until proven otherwise. Thats just animal nature, including humans.

WICHITA Kansas - Dec 2017 The dog can be seen moving in front of the girl and the officer says "OK, we got a dog inside here too...whoa whoa" and then fires his service weapon two times. The footage shows the girl immediately jumping up from the floor and runs in the other room while screaming that her eye has been hit. Officer Dexter Betts employment with the police department ended in January 2018, just weeks after the shooting. The video, released to the Wichita Eagle just days ago shows Betts firing his gun at the dog. The shot missed the dog and according to Wichita police, the bullet ricocheted. (No ricochet sound is heard) (They all gathered outside, You never hear cops call for Medical, but you do hear radio traffic ask what happened, probably the sargent, We know that the dumb ass cop outside didn't know anything, not even knowing the girl had been shot. You do here the Father screaming for help) (Uhh don't ever call the Wichita PD for help, They will kill you or let you die!!!) GEEESH! (NOW the real BS flows) The attorney for the family says a fragment struck the 9-year-old girl in the forehead just above her eye. In the video released by the DA, body camera footage shows the former officer walking through the home where several children are present. A young girl can be seen sitting on the floor near a couch and a mid-sized black and white dog. The attorney for officer Dexter Betts released the following statement Friday regarding the release of the body camera footage of the shooting: "Officer Betts responded to a 911 call that was highly volatile and presented a real danger for the responding officers’ safety. The 911 caller advised that a firearm had been used in violence in the caller’s house. Officer Betts’ supervisor directed Betts to enter the house and locate that firearm. (Now the cover up by the BLUE ISIS Starts) Acting in full compliance with the Wichita Police Department’s Policy Manual, Officer Betts did exactly what he was trained to do. The entire situation is unfortunate, but it is still a case of self‐defense. Officer Betts is innocent of the offense charged. Unfortunately The Wichita Eagle did not include the condition or Loss if any of the girl that was shot

if police dogs get the same legal protection as police....pet dogs should get the same legal protection as humans.
if you have to shoot a dog, you should then have to prove how you felt your life was in eminent danger, and there were no other means to subdue the animal...if you just show up and grease a dog, and it was not posing a threat, you get a minimum 10 year sentence.
if someone shoots one of my dogs, they will find you floating face down in the charles.....i care more about my dogs than most people.
honestly, if you are afraid of a barking dog, you are a fucking pussy.....and shouldnt be a cop in the first place.....and that officer in the video would not leave my house alive, ill tell you that much.....you dont just shoot my daughter and my dog and walk out like its no big deal

The issue with a taser on a dog is you have to remember to hold it sideways so both prongs hit the animal (taser prongs have vertical spreads for humans and dogs are obviously more horizontally shaped). So, unless you train to do this (very unlikely), you’ll probably miss.
There is no static SOP, but firing your service weapon means you need to be justified using deadly force, be it on a person or an animal. Each situation is entirely different.
Personally, I always pull out my baton if a dog charges me. Usually either moving directly at the dog (never back down from a dog, it will only become more aggressive) or a tap with a steel baton enough to let them know you mean business is plenty.
My own personal belief is also that this job comes with getting into fights, be it with people or animals. So, a dog would likely have to have pretty good hold of me to discharge my weapon. That’s a personal choice, so I can’t speak for other LEOs.
Also, rabies shots are in the shoulder now and no big deal.

99% of the time, the media/public aren’t properly informed, but there are definitely some bad ones out there.
I can show you a hundred years of popo work that did not kill family pets and family members on their porch at night. It happened right here in this country up til about 20 years ago, Tasers are new part of kit, cops just weren't trigger happy pussies like many are now. Enough with the woe is me bullshit about jobs being hard, cops job is not easy but its not even in the top 50 hard jobs. If you think your job being hard makes it okay for you to shoot innocent people you should be in jail.

No way I would have shot that dog so close to that little kid. No way. I would have taken the bite. The dog would have got shot eventually if it bit. If it nipped and retreated I wouldn't have shot it. If it latched on and you could do it with out shooting yourself, I would.
I love dogs. Never bad dogs just bad owners. I have shot one dog that chased a woman into an outhouse. When I arrived she was in the process of climbing into an open window of her car. Her husband pulled up to the door and left enough room so she could get in the car. When I arrived the dog had wondered off and was at the boat ramp. He was aggressive and ran at me. I yelled "No". He got it about 8 feet from me. His POS owner had been sicking him on peoples dogs at the campground. You can ruin a dog just as easy as you can ruin a kid. Owner needed shot too.

Officers responded to the report of a domestic disturbance and suicidal person at a home near 13th and Hillside. Police had said officers were told a 33-year-old man in the home had held a gun in his mouth and choked a dog.
The family's attorney, Charles O'Hara, tells KAKE News by the time police by the time police arrived, the situation has been resolved and the couple was standing outside, with no weapon and ready to talk to police.
"While the officers were retrieving the gun, a mid-sized mixed breed dog charged at one of the officers," police said in news release after the incident. "The officer pulled his service weapon and shot at the dog, missing it."

It looked to me like the dog wasnt so much charging but getting between and protecting the little girl. Exactly what he should do when unfamiliar people come in. That cop was way the fuck out of line. As Dune said, no way I would have shot in that situation. You take the pain you dont shoot near a little kid. If the DA wont punish him there are times and places for justice to be served.
He's been fired and charged with felonies. Trial in August.

I don't hear any stories about folks working jobs that are way harder and dangerous than being a cops such and logging, coal mining, construction work, etc. where the workers feel entitled to murder people and pets because their job is hard and dangerous.
Still need a deeper dive into what practices , training, personality, traits, etc etc contributed to this incident and many others we read about. Its not just a bad cop issue.
I'm thinking meth heads coming into my house would be less of a threat these days.
And if you shoot a meth head you will probably not get charged at all, certianly no billed at the worst.
If the home owner shot the cop for shooting his child, he wouldn't make it to jail they would kill everything standing.
If i was on jury duty I would no bill the home owner for protecting his family if he made it to jail.

Last real encounter had 2 cars show up for ? Burglery attempt and bad guys ran through my backyard.
Talked to one officer and backed off while they intervied my son and onother person.
Pd # 3 shows up and tells me to go home told him I was complaintant and it was my front yard, not goin anyware.
Guess he didn't like the fact the entire batch of us were open carry.
To damn bad, get over it, change jobs or leave Texas.
Today had retired leo hassled me at the gun show, rules (stupid ) are inside guns strapped, mags out and empty. Fine hate it!

He started in on his disertation of the rules, like I gave. A shit! I explained the ltc definition of premises to him and sent him on his way.

Reason I ask, if the prosecuting attorney charges him with something very high on the list of charges, it makes it much harder to compel a jury beyond a reasonable doubt.

Might be tough for a jury here. Cop is going to say the dog attacked him so fast he had to make a split second decision.
Jury is going to have to decide if they believe he acted knowingly and recklessly and not inside the scope of his job. Not an easy thing for an unbiased jury to do.
Will be interesting to see, but I expect the cop to be acquitted and the city to pay the family a large sum of money.

15 years in and I have yet to shoot a dog. I know a lot of guys that have and it burns me up. I had a pit rip the sole off my boot once, but I managed to get out of it without either of us getting seriously hurt. I also own a pit and has one of the best and sweetest dogs I've ever owned.

If you walk on his property, and he's territorial, he'll do the only thing he knows to do. Nothing to fault the dog for. Taser works, pepper spray is 50/50, but most of the time if you don't act like a scared ass, they will leave you alone. Now, have I been in a position where I could've shot dogs justifiably, absolutely. But somehow I've figured a way out of every one so far. The thought of killing a dog is sickening to me.

Agreed, Tucker, but a quick scroll through Youtube will show that this is, if not endemic, at least wide spread, and not just regarding dogs. Seems like the balance has shifted from when I was a kid " Shoot as an absolute last resort" to "Shoot first, and do all you can to weasel out of your mistake." I see a number of reasons for this, none of them good.

Like most things, the media coverage makes things seem much more prevalent than it really is.
Should we do whatever we can to weed out bad cops? Absolutely.
Is it even remotely close to the same galaxy as “endemic?” Absolutely not.
Statistically speaking, liberal gun grabbers have better evidence for their “gun control” measures than anyone claiming there is a huge problem with cops. Many, many more are killed in non police related gun violence.
