oh its definately an issue. i have 2, one for AR and 1 for AK. Best way to deal with ND is only go binary when doing mag dumps.

If you want to have a full auto just for the novelty of having a full auto, go for it. The process of buying a transferrable full auto is the same as buying a suppressor. If your budget is less than $10,000 get a Mac 11. Then get the M11/9 tricked out with Lage Manufacturing uppers and 22 conversion, this gets you an SMG that performs like an UZI. Individuals usually list their full autos on sturmgewehr dot com NFA market board.
I bought mine as bucket list items. I rarely fire them anymore but still like that I have them. They have certainly been an investment and gone up in value quite a bit over the years.
I thought a SOT was more like $2K/year. Maybe I'm off on my numbers. Weaponsguild has a lot of info on the subject though and that'd probably be the first place I'd look especially after just getting a SOT.

Let’s just be clear you can’t just get an FFL and become an SOT. You have to show actual intention to operate a business to the ATF.
I'd be curious what you could get away with there. People make money with YouTube Videos. As a hobby machinist I would also think it potentially valuable if you were trying to develop semi auto conversions of formerly full auto weapons (the ATF will not send you back an "easily converted" full auto but will destroy it if you send it in for a ruling.) I believe SOTs are site bound but if not I would also be curious about weapons and their utility in movie shoots.
Shot full auto about 1/2 dozen times. My old gun club had a class 3 dealer who used to show up with a bunch of full auto guns every couple of months. Very nice guy and would generally let you put a mag down range if you were a regular/he knew you.
If you could pick one up for $1500 might be fun to have, but not something I'd be willing to pay $25,000 for. As others have said you can burn through $100 of ammo in a few minutes, you're much more likely to get jams and any semblance of precision shooting disappears after the first 5-6 rounds.
That being said, I'm old enough to remember when you could pick up a full auto Uzi for $4-5,000 and that I thought about doing so. Probably should have gone for it, as I could have shot the cr*p out of it and covered the cost of ammo when I went to sell it.

I used to own a registered, select fire M-16. I rarely shot it on full auto. 95% of it's use on full auto was when someone would learn that I owned it, and they would want to shoot it. I would tell them to buy some factory ball ammo, and bring it to the range. Most would show up with 2-3 boxes of 20 rounds each that would be gone in no time. Then they would hope to bum some ammo from me. I learned early on to NOT bring any extra ammo. During the years I owned it, I can only recall 4-5 times (out of dozens of times I let people shoot it) that anyone sent me home with extra ammo and a thank you. I eventually sold it, and frankly I don't really miss it.
I'm more into precise rifle fire, and agree with Jeff Cooper's assessment of full auto fire. Cooper essentially said that he wants the other guy to have full auto fire because they will usually spray and pray, and miss. While anyone who is serious about killing the other guy will use precisely placed rounds...not full auto. Cooper believed that full auto was best saved for squad and company level weapons, not for individual shooters.
But I gotta admit, it is fun to rattle off a magazine every so often. With some of the new triggers and some practice, a decent rifleman can unload an AIMED 30 rounds of 5.56 ammo in less than 15 seconds. That is only 2 rounds a second, and it is still an astounding amount of firepower.

I'm surprised by the amount of "full auto is stupid" posts in here, I wasn't aware that the hide had such a following from the gay community. I'm proud of you guys, it must really takes balls to be open like that with an audience that's mostly testosterone fueled pussy pounding men.
I would giggle like a little girl the whole time but I also realize full auto has its place especially when I am paying the ammo bill.
Now then if it did not require papers (and in turn cost) like it does I would certainly have a squad weapon like an mg42, 249 or mag58. If you are going that route go all the way and forget goofy mag fed rifles many of which are really too light for sustained full auto.
If I were building I would also make a few smgs. why not they are dirt the hell simple.
If you already own an ar, the cheapest bet would be to buy a registered lighting link. They came out in the 80’s. Or become an ffl that can sell class 3 firearms and buy a dealers sample for a 1/3 of the cost. Only problem is if you close shop the class 3 can only be sold to another class 3 dealer or demilled.

It's interesting hearing people talk about them. As an example with an MG42 people who have them basically consider the recuperator, the bolt and the booster consumable parts.
If I had the choice I'd much rather work on a machine gun in its original FA form (hell its original open bolt form would even be awesome) rather than the semi auto conversions done to most stuff. The semi auto versions are way more complex typically and the only benefit is keeping the ATF off your ass. The best machine guns tend to be dirt simple mechanically which reduces breaking provided the parts are heavy enough built. (that weight vs firepower dichotomy is a bitch in a lot of cases.)
I know of a night vision, dune buggy, desert machine gun shooting place about an hour away from Las Vegas...

Be on the lookout. I haven'y posted much about anything yet as the whole corona bullshit basically had us push the go live until early 2021. In the meantime, I was like, let's do a NV machine gun range too and started accumulating weapons.
Vegas is ok, but for MG stuff its basically sit through a safety brief and then stand at a pistol range where some guy comes and sets the gun infront of you and then sits ontop of you while you shoot it at some paper target at 50 yards. Fuck all that.
How about outside, 100s of yards, 2x steel ranges with the option to do it at night with nightvision and cosmic bowling with machineguns?

Easiest way is FFL/SOT, like most have said it gets old and expensive real quick. Currently have 14 FA’s, Scar16, M16, Uzi, Mac11, Mac10, MP5, Sterling, AK, Glock and Thompson and working on the M2. For rentals they are money makers, tabs run up quick. For me to play with, nah, it’s just a way for me to waste ammo that is not exactly easy to come by these days.
I did the transferable way years ago, sold all at a very nice profit, sold cause I never used them. Everyone wanted to shoot my Uzi when they didnt pay for ammo, very easy to go through 1000rds of ammo in a matter of minutes.

Full Auto is for fun, just like my 700HP supercar is 600HP more than I need to get down the road, but is a lot of fun!
