So how do you think the FNP line of pistols stack up against the the H&K, Sig and other combat pistols (9mm-45acp).

Well let me be the first to say welcome to the hide! Friendly heads up some guys get grumpy if you don't fill out your profile. As for the FNP series they seem to be getting some pretty good reviews I believe there is currently a thread about the FNP45 tactical. I say get a H&K MK23 and quit screwing around but then again I'm one of very few H&K guys on here. I own 3 H&k's and love them all, 1 sig p220 supermatch and I will never buy a sig again, Glocks are good but personally I dont like them. Personally I cant wait for the chance to try out a FN pistol. Then again I'm trying to save my money for a few years and get myself a korth semi-auto.

I love my FNP-9 pistol. It's shoots great when I do my part! I haven't had a single problem with it yet after about 700 rounds or so. I've shot Wolf, Brown Bear, Hornady, and American Eagle rounds through no problem. It's pretty simple to clean and maintain.

My USG FNP 45 has been flawless for 2000 handloads. Shooting HP, SWC, WC whatever. Fits me better than the 1911 it replaced for 3 gun.

The FN is a lot of pistol for the money honey. Take your pick, the FNP or the fully ambi FNX. I'm a Glock 40 guy but just ordered a FNP 40 for myself to replace my G23 for concealed carry and my son ordered one of the instructor program FNP 40's in dark earth for his class and woods carry gun. I love that double action on all the FN pistols.

They only make one single action model to my knowledge. So, yes, they are that bad.

I think it's actually two models. The X-5 and the P220SA. Maybe I have my facts wrong.

I think they are very much underrated. Probably not going to be easily built into a full race USPSA pistol, but they are very solid and easily on par with any other combat pistol.

Reliability is irrelevant if it's not comfortable to shoot. Shot placement trumps all.

That is true. I have owned both brands of pistols. I had an HK USP Compact .45, a Sig P226 9mm DA/SA, and a Sig P226R DAK 9mm. I sold all three of them.

Of the three, if I was forced to have one of them again, it'd be the HK, because despite its high bore axis and other caveats, it can be carried cocked and locked and even converted to single action only.

Back on topic, bringing a new DA/SA pistol to market in the year 2010 is ridiculous in my opinion. Considering the light double actions, striker fired, and single action pistols, there's really no justification for a gun with two trigger pulls. It is hard to learn, even harder to master, and has no substantial advantages over the other three trigger systems.

Bringing/marketing a new product in our market is difficult. When I started shooting, there was no such thing as a "Springfield XD" or "S&W M&P." Both of these have proven successful because they brought something innovative to market (as in, there's something new on them that wasn't as nicely executed or non-existent before they were brought to market).

I'd postulate that nothing can be done to the DA/SA pistol that hasn't been done already. And so if I were in the market for one, I highly doubt that FN has produced something that'd sway me away from the traditional DA/SA options (Beretta, Sig, HK, etc.).

I love my FN bolt gun, but I just don't see anything innovative and new in their pistols. I don't get paid to shoot any particular pistol and I compete in USPSA Production, Single Stack, and Limited divisions, so I have a safe with a pretty broad plethora of choices. One thing I don't compete with or shoot with any regularity is DA/SA.

If nothing else, the grip shape and texture looks good, the controls look easy to access, etc. My choice of DA/SA pistols would probably be the CZ-75, though...unless weight was an issue.

I was in your shoes 6 months ago I ended up buying a H&K p30 9mm which is an outstanding pistol that I coulden't be happier with. That being said for the price you can't beat a FN-P I have smaller hands and the FNP-9 fits me perfect

I bought a Fn Fnp 9 about a year ago. I love it. it has a pretty nice trigger, is very accurate, is easy to disassemble and clean. It also came with 3 mags instead of just 2.

The only thing is that it took about 250 rounds to get everything running smoothly, but now i have probably 800 or so rounds through it and i never have any kind of problem.

It is a fine firearm.

no sigs are amazing IMO they are the best handguns you can buy. H&K's are great too. what made you not like either one of those

i deffinitely disagree with the DA/SA arguement too. Why settle for just one when you can have both. all you need to do is decock. Sometimes a heavy trigger pull is good and others you dont neccesarily need it but with a da/sa you dont have to chose. Granted they might be a little harder to learn but if it takes more time to get used to something that is better then i would say that it is time well spent. they are still a very valid system and used by our military as well as many LE agencies. You are correct in that sig and beretta have just about perfected the da/sa format but that doesnt mean that we shouldnt make them anymore. If that were the case bolt guns would have been out a long time ago.

however, back to the original reason for this thread, i do like the FNP handguns and almost bought one myself. They are very nice and i like the fact that they arent just another polymer striker fired gun with a jerky trigger pull. Also, i really like the beretta-esq safety/decock and i really like the fact that its located on the frame instead of in a weird position on the slide where you cant get to if you have big thumbs like the beretta. the only complaint that i have about them is they seem very slight in the grip, more similar to a glock style grip which i personally dont like. I prefer very full and large grips such as a sig and beretta. IMO theyre no sig or beretta but they are a very functional and modern handgun at a great price point that i think fits a good niche in the market.

I feel the same way you do about DA/SA pistols. That said, I have some friends(husband/wife) that are not gun people but decided they wanted to be. Asked myself and another friend who are dedicated Glock guys to help them find a gun.

Short version is, after hours of looking at everything made and trying some of our options, they were "uncomfortable with a gun without a safety." I have heard the same thing from several of my non-gun friends that thought they wanted a pistol and while it doesn't make much sense they cannot be disuaded from the notion that a safety lever will somehow keep "accidents" from happening. The husband/wife pair finally decided on the FNP 9, it was something they felt they could be comfortable with.

I must admit, while I'm not a huge fan of the DA/SA system, the FNP's are not too bad, I actually felt pretty good shooting it. It wouldn't be my first choice for a pistol but there are plenty on the list below it. And, they scored a pretty good deal on it as well.

Final thought, as far as DA/SA's go the FNP's are the best that I've shot and the only one I have found that I would own.

I've put around 600 rounds through my FNP45 USG and it has been reliable and very accurate so far. It's a big pistol though so it won't fit everyone. I have no experience with the other FNP's but I believe the FNP45 actually has more in common with the newer FNX's with its ambi mag release and ambi safety/decocker. The safety/decocker gives you the option of cocked and locked carry if you prefer. The 14 round flush magazines and 15 rounds extended mags are hard to beat if you want capacity in a 45acp.

My particular pistol had weak ejection with 230gr FMJ American Eagle and Winchester ammo. Never had a stoppage though. It was was lightly tossing the cases over my right arm at 4 o'clock and would occasionally send empty cases straight back into my forehead. My Sig P220 by comparison would launch cases 30 feet down the firing line. I shot some higher power defensive ammo to break it in and its been a lot better since then.

Accuracy is excellent if I do my part. It groups as well as my buddy's Nighthawk GRP at 15 yards.

There is no reason to dislike HKs because of the DA/SA setup. There are at least 9 different variants you can choose from, and I would put the Light LEM trigger on my HK45 against any non-1911 trigger out there.

Reliability is irrelevant? Uh, ok. If shot placement is everything, then no shot because of a malfunction means your dead.

DA/SA may be outdated, but so are 1911s. Both are still getting the job done. Or you can have the best of reliability and ease of operation with the LEM.

I had a bad experience with the FNP-45T and won't buy another.

I had an FN 45 Tactical. Not bad, but felt like a cordless drill in my hand. When folks say a lot of gun for they money, they <span style="font-style: italic">mean</span> it. They are B I G. Functioned flawlessly, and the point of aim was astoundingly natural - especially when compared to a Glock.

As for the HKs, I now have 4 of them. I have the .45 Tactical, the matching 9mm (tactical) and a pair of .40s. I had ALL of them converted to the LEM trigger (and retained the manual safety as well), and I will never go back to anything else!!

Could you elaborate?
I just bought an HK USP 45Tac over the FN 45T. The deciding factors against FN were: grip feeling sharp against my hands and tiny slide control; but the 15 cap mag was tempting. However, I found a Promag that holds 20 for HK USP 45. That tipped the decision for me. Shot it this weekend and hated the all-black sights, so ordered a Meprolight. Otherwise, love the recoil control, ergonomics (big but doesn't feel it), and placement of slide and decocker handles.

I really am impressed with the FN.. but I agree with the cordless drill comment.. I just don't like the feel of the gun. So, just a personal pref thing. I've only fired a couple dozen rounds through one so not a ton of experiance.

I do have to admit, it did peak my interest. I was set on buying a USP until about a week ago when I shot that FN.

What's with all the Sig haters all of the sudden? Seriously, curious

I admit, the double action on a DA/SA gun sucks and the trigger reset is a bit forward but the thing feels oh so good. I've got a 229 in .40 and I love shooting that gun, and for the most part I don't care for shooting .40

To the OP.. I'd say not to pigeon hole yourself into one make/model. The best way to choose a gun is to go in open minded. Feel, sight and most importantly shoot each model if possible. Choosing the right gun is a very personal choice. As you have read above each person has different needs and preferences. I myself have never shot the FN but have held one. Didn't suit my fancy compared to other manufactures/models available but YMMV. There are lots of reviews topics out there on these pistols. A quick Google search should reveal some data.

Good god. Why a MK23?? Perhaps the worst thing H&K ever built. Even the guys they were built for hated them and used USPs whenever possible.
