How do you work up a load the right way?

What I would like to know is, when do you feel you should start trying different seating depths as opposed to faster bullets.

Some folks are into the lands and some are 10 thou or more off the lands.

What is the best thing to try first or is there a certain order that is best to follow?

Well it depends on your ammo use goal.

- one of my first considerations is does it need to be magazine length or under or is single loading of over mag length bullets desired for max accuracy.

-if I desire a magazine compatable load I'll load about 8-10 thousandths under mag length and walk up the powder charge. Tune for the best and then adjust seating depth depth shorter in 10 thousanths increments until I find the best of that.

-then you can tune for neck tension; 0.001, 0.002, 0.003, or 0.004" tension. For this to work you need to be consistent with cleaning the carbon and lube out of the inside of the neck or your wasting your time. I use a bore brush with a wrap of steel wool to remove the carbon. it may be overkill and it might not.

I'm still learning the precision accuracty game from a lot of folks here but those are my findings.

another thing that my experience has show me; either jam a bullet into the lands a few thousandths or get at least 10 thousanths away. If I'm less than that away the variance in ogive distance to the lands is enough to cause my ES/SD to jump. This is my experience in my rifle, other guys might disagree in their experience with their rifles. At 300 yards my 0.005" jump loads were more than double than my 0.010" jump. I'm thinking this is all about the consistency of the build up of the pressure curve.

Look up Creighton Auddette Method of reloading. It does a great job of showing YOUR gun's harmonic nodes. It is easy and uses WAY less components.

As far as seating depth, are you hunting or bench shooting? If hunting, seat off the lands around .010-.020. Seating on or into the lands when hunting in cold weather doesn't work well

The key is consistency. I wouldn't waste my time working up a load if I was going to bed or adjust any part of my rifle. Make sure your work on the rifle is complete before working up a load. Everything you do will change POI. Good luck.

I have a gas gun and 2 bolts I need to work up some loads for. One for High power, one for hunting and one for Long range shooting.

I've really just been kinda winging it on loads by trying out loads that worked in some one elses gun.

After reading about the tuning for a powder charge it seems like a pretty straight forward process. Not easy, but I can see how its done and it makes sense.
