Greetings. I am thinking about adding a a few clicks behind zero into my zero stop. That way if the weather/altitude is different I can simply move the appropriate clicks while sighting then just make a mental adjustment of how many it took. Also will allow me to use other ammos and simply take note of how many clicks etc. Then when I dial in my dope back it off appropriately. What are your thoughts? How do you set yours?

I go 1 full MIL below. I’m not a PRS shooter or anyone that needs to quickly slam their turrets back to their Zero and shoot instantly though.

I can always hold down a bit but it’s not like it’s gonna change enough to worry about.

I like a half mil. But my reasoning is so I can go past zero and come back up to it. I can ensure I’m always coming up to my correction. Not up sometimes and down sometimes. I’ve never seen inconsistencies due to direction I landed on my numbers but it makes me feel good.
1mil below. Shooting 16.5” 308 and 24” 6.5CM from the same rifle you’ll need it
Currently I have .3 below zero but I am finding that in some situations I could use more. My next scope I will set to .5 below.
Zero and know your shorter distance hold unders. But if you shoot same rifle in different locations (altitude) then it differs. As with many things, it’s personal preference.

I shoot in a lot of different conditions, and have as many as 3 loads per rifle.
The original purpose of a zero stop is just to make sure you don’t end up a rotation low coming back down from a long range shot. The speed that was picked up is incidental, though very nice.
Being that I need flexibility, and I know for 100% certain that I am more precise when I dial and hold center, I set a zero stop about 2 minutes below a 100 yard zero.
Another way of looking at that is that my zero stop is LITERALLY at about zero elevation for that rifle/scope.
I do the same thing with irons, if they have enough elevation for me to “waste” some.

Dedicated optic to 1 barrel/rifle - Set at Zero
Switch barrel/caliber - Set at 1/2 mil low

I set mine to zero and note any offsets in my data book. Rifle stays zeroed with 175 FGMM and I just record any changes if/when I use different ammo.
My Razor gen2 goes .5 mil below zero though I'd prefer having the option to set it at true zero.
This. I used to set it dead-on, but got tired of dicking with it every time I changed something. My primary concern is now simply that I don't end up off by a full turn.
The Zero STOP...another time is when switching from suppressed to unsuppressed...this way you only reset the turret itself, and don’t have to dick around with the zero stop mechanism
I always leave room below just in case I shoot ammunition that my rifle isn’t zeroed for.
I can honestly say that I have never ever ran my turret down and bumped my zero stop on my scopes that have them. Not on accident and not on purpose.

I set mine at zero during spring/summer then recheck my zero when i start shooting in colder weather around 30 degrees or less, then reset my zerostop for any changes because of the colder weather. It gives me a reason to check my 100 yard zero a little more often
.5 mil. Not because of hold "under's", but because of zero changes in environmental to ammo speed.
I use .5 MIL since I sometimes swap my main scope between several rifles which are about .2 MIL different in elevation - I quickly learned setting the zero stop to "0" for my main rifle gave me no leeway to easily adjust the crosshairs to directly hold on target.

I go nearly 4 mil below that allows me to crank down to a shorter range if I want . I can't loose the cap zero I know where it is . It depends on the shim thickness where it lands . The gun is a switch caliber switch scope , turret cap 0 is @ 500 meters .

S&B MTC's can typically squeeze .4 or so out below the zero-stop. (You can't adjust it anyhow - although it can be defeated with some surgery).

I set dead at zero. It takes all of 30 seconds to reset the turret after zero'ing the rifle.
I'll hold under if the shot requires it. Although in 5 years of PRS, the only time I've needed to hold under were the 3 or 4 stages where holding under was required for the stage.

Yes, I’d confirm zero, but I don’t rezero. I know the offset with each caliber and account for it. The zero stop is set at 1mil below. That’s enough to account for everything. The main zero right now is for 6.5CM
Vortex Razor Gen II allows you to go .5 below which helps with changing from a practice to match load if they are different.
Another reason to set zero below is if matches you go to force you to shoot with the rifle on its side. I've only had one "match" that forced you to do this (MD did more carbine stuff that LR).
On my scope when I dial the turret up the POI goes up when I dial it down the POI goes down . Eventually it hits the zero stop which is as low as I can go .
You sound like you have no clue,
Shots inside 100 yards require you to dial UP, you have to overcome the mechanical offset of the sight over bore situation
