How long do you wait?

I sold an item to a member a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't received any $$ or any reply to a pm.
It's only $75, and it's not like I'm needing the money to buy my heart pills, but 2 weeks is a while not to even hear back from somebody.
I'm thinking another week would be reasonable.
What do y'all think?

Re: How long do you wait?

I have little to no tolerance for people who say they'll buy things and then completely fall off the face of the earth when it comes to paying. That said, not all situations are the same and sometimes things happen that prevent people from engaging in PM/online comms that make it seem like they are ducking/dodging you.

Has the purported buyer: 1) been on the Hide since the "deal" was made? (you can look up the member in the user list tab and it will give you their last date/time online); 2) is the PM "unread" or has it been read and then ignored for 2wks?; 3) do you have an e-mail addy for the purported buyer or other method of contact? If so, try that and see if the guy responds to that form of comm.

If he doesn't respond within the next few days (in one method of communicaton or another), relist the item for sale and don't lose any sleep over it whatsoever. Also, be sure to let us know who the alleged deadbeat is so that the rest of us can avoid the same situation in the future.

Im not sure about outing someone here. I have the record of all communication with a guy who commited to buy a scope and then just dropped off the face of the planet. Would it be right for me to publish that...hes a member here.

The buyer has not been on the Hide since the deal was made.
My pm is still "unread".
I just sent an email to the address in his profile.

I don't have any intentions of "outing" anybody, but anybody that wants any more info can check my recent posts.
The guy has been a Hide member way longer than I have.

Re: How long do you wait?

I'd send him a PM telling him if you don't hear from hear from him within X number of days, you're going to re-post the item for sale. It's your item, and you've given him the opportunity to buy it, which he hasn't taken. Just be glad that no money or items hadn't traded hands and this business occurred. While him not keeping his word is bad business, there's no permanent or long-term harm on either end. Post your item back up.

Re: How long do you wait?

i had the opposite situation on a different forum. i told a guy i will take his item and didnt hear from him for two weeks... very frustrating, i emailed a half a dozen times and nothin. i figured he changed his mind, then all of a sudden i got a message from him saying he would ship/meet me with it depending on where i lived. long story short it took over a month to deal with him and i didnt like it.
i say do what youre comfortable with, but dont feel bad if you relist it. he put you in this situation, he can take responsibility for his own shortcomings on proper business etiquitte.

Re: How long do you wait?

Well, I got a "failure to deliver" notice back from his email address in his profile.
I'll give him another week to reply to his pm.

Thanks for the replies!

Re: How long do you wait?

Leave the ball in their court, PM them that they have x number of days form that PM to respond and confirm their intentions, or the offer is withdrawn and the item will be relisted for sale. Period.

Re: How long do you wait?

I had one of our members agree to buy something and then just carry on without paying or returning my contact attempts. I gave him time to respond, then just put the item back up for sale. I then sent him a PM advising that since he failed to respond, despite logging in and posting after the sale date, our gentleman's agreement was voided. In your case, you've done more than enough to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, so re-list and don't forget his name.

Re: How long do you wait?

You guys are very forgiving. I had this happen once, got to be about a week since making the sale. I had sent two PMs in the meantime. I sent him a final PM saying since he wasn't communicating and I hadn't received the money, I would be relisting the item.

I did, and have no regrets. In today's world its pretty ridiculous to not be able to take 30 seconds and send an email. I understand things happen, I'd give a guy I've never met all the time in the world if he was like "Hey, my Dog is sick" or "My father in law is in the hospital." I don't need all the details but be at least willing to tell me SOMETHING is going on that's taking up your time so I know I'm not just being ignored.

Communication is key these days.
