How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

I have a personal range that stays set up year round with large and small steel at 1,2,350,5, and 600 yards. I just added 1000 but you have to move from th efiring line to another location. I shoot atleast three times a week and seven days when I can get away with it

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

My rifle club gets range time on military ranges, in an ideal year we shoot past 500 12 to 14 times. Lately, due to the conflicts in Iraq/Afganistan the MOD have been nicking our range dates and we have lost a few.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Wonder if we could get together with him and shoot. Would be nice to take advantage of that calibre of range. Which store, Cabelas? Good resource.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Shooting NRA Long Range, Mid-Range, and Across the course I can get some form of 500+ every weekend from April through October if I want. Practice wise I'm limited to a 100yd range or my brother's inlaws farm which I can get 300+

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

I shoot out to 500 meters about once a week. As an NCO in the Swedish army combat engineers, I have access to the ranges at work every day (week days beteween 0700 and 2200, weekends between 0900 and 1700). Both when on and off duty.
3 min drive or 5 by bike from my home.

Quite happy with that! ;-)

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

We have a 500 yard range just out of town that I try to visit at least once a week. I have a 100 yard range for load development about 10 minutes away 2+ times a week. I also have steel to shoot at one mile.

That is actually the reason i started this thread, so that i could see which guys i should actually listen to there advice. I am only interested in opinions of guys that are actually doing it and not just reading/talking about it. </div></div>

So there you have it, looks like everyone..so you should listen to everything thats written!!

Awesome video Trip. "Wanna do it again?" "Uh Huh"-classic. Good stuff. </div></div>

Thanks....and to think he likes fishing better than shooting/hunting.

I'm the polar opposite.....

Vid shot on what's currently our 700 yard range, with steel hung at 300, 500, 600, 700, and one little bitty Humbler hung at 735. We just walk to where we want to shoot from and go at it, as long as the cattle and sheep cooperate. This all just a short walk from the house.....

If we go up top of the hill to the left of the range we can access most of the steel currently hung, as well as clear the ridge that currently serves as our backstop...which provides a total of 1230 from that spot to the far property line, also backstopped by another ridge.

In the process now of gathering more T-posts, chain, and target steel to make more target locations out to that 1230.......

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Every time I shoot my precision rifles unless I am load developing, checking zero or doing a dot drill is >500yds. Depends on the cows and what grass is tasting best....500...700...900yds. Frequency depends on what is in season. I shoot distance at least every 3-4 weeks, and when its not grouper, deer or turkey season I am shooting more often. Some times I just slip out for 10-12 rounds. Some times I may shoot 50-60 rounds.

The cows would be good reactive targets

To answer the OP - I rarely shoot under 400 unless I'm doing load devel. So 500+ 1-2 x per week. My club has a 600m steel range and I have a secret spot in the desert that's perfect for out to 1750yds within about a 45min drive. I probably do 1000yds shoots every other month

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Shooting mid range and long range FClass 2x per month with at least 1 practice/play session per week sometimes 2. Usually shoot something every weekend in the spring / summer months.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

how bad is it that i can be to a location to shoot out to 1100m or so within 20 min but with family, work, and whatever else i only go out about once or twice a month. and with working up load developments and dope and what not only 1/2 of that gets out to 500yds. my priority's are messed up.

True...and wind calls would be less important......as long as elevation is right you'll likely hit the cow somewhere! Only problem is they are black angus so my reticle washes out.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often

I shoot beyond 500 a couple times a year. Someone recently built a 1000yd range near me, but it's time to move again--oh-well. I shoot rifle at 100-200yds and pistol to 25yds once or twice a week, I just don't get to do much of the longer stuff.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

I belong to a gun club about twenty min. from my house. We have a 1k yard range. So far I have worked my way out to 600yds and feel extremely comfortable there. Will move out to 1k over the summer months. Man I love shooting precision rifles

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Local range is about 5 miles away and goes out to about 640 yards.

I start our f-class league sunday, which is shot at 300 and 600 yards, about twice a month.

308 is fun to listen to as it travels to the 640 yard ram, with electronic muffs, they muffle initial blast but still have time to catch the bullet in flight, and... the GONG!!!

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Up unto about a year ago we shot out to 650 every weekend but since diversified agriculture has bought up all the land access has been locked down tight. Our One and Only public range only has 100yd always avail. the 200yd line is only open on certain days.

Lookin to ask a few people for access hope it works out!

Aloha!

SO HOW MANY TIMES A YEAR DO YOU SHOOT 500YDS OR LONGER? </div></div>

My range is half an hour away, accommodates shooting paper to 600yds and steel out to 750. I shoot 500+yds 10-12 times a year work/family/weather permitting.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

If I had a range like some of you have right out my front or back door I would take the longest shot I could every day. I would probably one fire 1 or 2 shots but that is 1 or 2 more shots than I am currently shooting.

Practice makes perfect. It is nice to get out every day like when I take vacation to shoot PD. Recently I have been bringing one long range rifle and I will fire one or two rds every day at some far target. It is amazing how much easier it is on day 5 than it is on day 1. Now when I walk around I am always ranging things I can see. I guess than range it. Then always thinking about wind.

Hey i don't live in the city, i live on an island. The town I live in only has 3000 people in it. The rich retired people aren't real keen on shooting right next to the beach houses. </div></div>

What about finding a secluded section of beach, launch a boat and put out some target-bouys at various ranges..... in a safe direction of course...

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

I practice at the most 4 times a month. My farm is 2200 acres so I have the area to make 1500 yrd shots, but that would be a waste of ammo for me, just like 1000 yrd is. But I'm pretty deadly out to 750 on a 15inx15in steal plate, anything beyond that and i start wasting lead. I just can't see that good anymore, getting old sucks.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

Hey PGS, love those pics of Montana, you guys are fortunate to live out there, I love Montana, I have hunted there numerous times, and I drew a tag for this year, I will be going to southwest Montana in the upper ruby canyon hunting in the Beaverhead area.

Re: How many of you "actually" shoot 500yds+ often?

I'm very blessed. the club i'm a member at is about 20 minutes away and we have our own very nice 600 yard rifle range. it was the main reason i joined, but along the way i've made some awesome friends. I'm very blessed.
