How much is enough ammo?

535 rounds which ironically is the number of people who want to take your arms at the federal level. State,County and Municipal well you can do the math there, add all those numbers together and add 10,000 and thats how much ammo you really need.

My standards are H4350, H4831, H1000 and Unique. This gets 300RUM, 280AI, 30/06, 260 Rem. 6.5CM, 25/06, 40, 45ACP.
I don't load 5.56 or 9mm, it's cheap enough and I don't burn enough to not just buy commercial ammo when on sale to stockpile. I have a few other powders on hand but I've got a good load for all above spun up with these powders first.

Lots of good discussion.

  1. Match grade .223/5.56 and .308/7.62, and high quality JHP 9mm are what I keep in what I consider to be large quantities.
  2. .45 ACP, 12 gauge, Match grade 6.5 Creedmoor and .22 rimfire in decent quantity.
  3. I also have a bit of 6.8 SPC
What no one else has mentioned is 7.62x39??? No one keeps that in supply. I think my AK will be the busiest of all if a SHTF event occurs. It is also very widely available. I keep it in category 2 quantity.

I have always stressed having spare parts in inventory including barrel/gas system assembly, extractor/ejector, triggers, buffer springs, magazine parts and tools. Luckily for me, I use an AI so swapping barrels/calibers is a snap. I also use Larue tOBRs to avoid needing special tools to change the barrel.

I need a bigger house. Ammo takes up a lot of room. I am continually feeling the need to start reloading but haven’t talked myself into it yet.

When uncle Sam sends out our tax refund as I mentioned prior i will be ordering another 3000 rounds of 7.62x39 for my sks, more .223,556. I can see why ammo is key to staying in the game for the long haul. Farm living now since retirement from a LODI spine injury . Our farm is exposed on 3 sides by 1/2 to 1 mile, 380 yards on the back side that's my concern point .308 & 7.62×39 is my main choice for covering the rear. I will need something more than my RPR 6.5 To reach out past the 1/2 MIle markers... Im getting old 57 so I guess I'm getting the kids all situated for what's sure to happen in their lifetime oldest is 30, youngest is 25 with 7 gand kids.

Haha imagine all your people inheriting a metric shit ton of ammo in the future. Like getting 20,000 obsidian tipped arrows in 1930 when Chief Whatever finally died...

Hoard gold like a normal psycho and your kin will thank ye very much on their way to the Space Casino guarded by laser wielding snipers (perfect BC on that bitch)

Amen. I inherited 6 smaller fire safes full of ammo. I have built guns just to try and get rid of it. A PCC is an extremely efficient way to unload 9mm.

BTW my reasoning for buying certain amounts of ammo have changed over the years-although not really. When I started a while ago it was because it was available and at a good price. That is still the case-even more so today. Between then and now however I realized the difference between ammo being readily available to not being readily available is exactly the reason to buy it in the first place.

The point of 'having' ammo... is to shoot it and stay proficient and/or build proficiency.

And then reload it and shoot it again... Getting better and more proficient with your guns... with every round you put downrange.

If SHTF or Zombie apocalypse ever does happen... ammo will be currency. And survival. I get that. But 'having' a stockpile is less important than being able/willing to use it.

That means proficiency before SHTF.

Just my two percent of a dollar....

Cheers,

Sirhr
