How much would it take for you to quit your job?

Screw it, I flatly refuse to help you prolong your little personal pissing contest. </div></div>

Greg, I have upset you and it was not my intent and I would like to apologize. I was not "trolling" you but the very direct way that I responded could have been construed as being confrontational and I regret it.

I would very much like for the USA to regain its competitive advantage and go head to head with the rest of the world. It has been my personal experience that Washington and lots of different self interest groups have gotten in the way.

I personally think that the best way to tear down these impediments at this point is to quit propping up dieing industries and let them fail. After the collapse new companies can step in and hopefully compete.

I understand and recognize your point about anti-competitive business practices and think that the US Government should step in and protect domestic industries from dumping.

If you take a look at rifles for instance, there really isn't a need for any of us to go chase a rifle from India or China. The quality of the actions, barrels, stocks and any number of parts that go into making a precision piece of equipment are readily available here and because of this the U.S. is a fierce competitor in this market.

If you look at scopes on the other hand, it seems to be agreed that the quality of the glass and the manufacturing process at the high end is better in Germany and Japan. I would love it if a domestic company would step up to the plate and compete and because I am a little xenophobic I would probably buy there product.

Again no disrespect intended.

Cool. Apology happily accepted, but it really wasn't necessary at all. I could certainly have been a lot less direct myself.

All along in this, I got the impression neither of us was really phrasing arguments from our preferred poition.

In fact, your position led me to a very enlightening and enjoyable bit of research on the Jones Act via wikipedia. I really didn't recognize the reference and felt it deserved a better understanding on my part. So think you for introducing me to a pleasant exercise.

I agree that where failing industries are concerned, the best way to fix a slow leak is to stop refilling the tire, let it go flat, change the tire, and fix the leak the right way after all.

My only real concern is similar to what happened when Henry VIII sacked the catherdals and convents. He got rich, but he also put an end to education and scholarship in England for centuries to come. I'm concerned that what we're doing to our economy and society right about now may be pushing us over the slope into a similarly irrevocable slide.

You need to revisit your history books. The centuries after Henry VIII were full of scholarly achievements and significant innovation. Shakespeare, Marlowe, William Penn, the steam engine, the Industrial Revolution, Isaac Newton etc.

Just to name a few...
