Is their anyway to avoid detection from heat sensing devices at night, other than buring yourself in the dirt. presume these heat sensors can be used during the day also.

Have seen a dumb crook get lucky by hiding among some rocks that were still heated up from the day. That was some years back, I would suspect the FLIR is more sensitive today than it was then.

Think about the system and what it requires!! There is no easy way to beat it but it can be done. FLIR Technology is incredible these days especially the new (relative term) advanced systems which I have been lucky enough to play with.
If you ever get a chance look at the LRS and M2A3 thermal systems to get an idea of how efficient and awesome they truly are!

I know that igloos work, and are themselves hard to see at night with or without FLIR - even when doing low passes in a slip to check what will soon be the runway.

Just carry around an igloo.

I'd read that mylar would help. I can see that (somewhat) subduing convective radiation but I'd guess it eventually would experience conductive heating. Maybe a portable blind made from mylar backed with a thin sheet of styrofoam. But you'd still need a silhouette that blended and didn't scream HUMAN INSIDE.

Just read some interesing info on polar bears, apparantly they cant be seen with detectors due to their coat color, presume one could wear a polar bear coat to avoid detection.

I saw a video with John Plaster where they had this blanket you could cover yourself with to conceal your heat image. It's probably on you tube. Wish I knew the name of it. The blanket was see through up realclose (like from the inside looking out) but was camo on the outside. It shows it being used with thermal detection devices and looked like it worked pretty good. Do some research and see what pops up.

since you comment about insecure responses, I'll ask a question....what's your intended purpose?

Can thermals be defeated? Yes. Am I going to tell you how? No. And definitely not over the internet. Why? Because there are some of us on this board who use thermals, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, or the southern border, etc. and we do not want the enemy to know the weaknesses in our capabilities. Even if you're interest is purely academic, I'm not (and more than likely anyone else who uses these systems for work) going to share it with you. This is an unsecured internet forum, the boogereaters have the internet, and there is a war on.

Not trying to dog on you, but it might help explain the lack of serious answers you're getting.

There are plenty of ways to get around IR detectors

1. saturate the area with extreme levels of background IR radiation, think atomic detonation.
2. Steel the cam or batteries for the guy using it.
3. Let your body become ambient temp
4.Go kill a Predator and jack his rig, it defeated thermal in predator 2.
5. Use a "special" mirror to deflect ambient temp, think holding the mirror at 45 deg angle, if you held it at 90deg the detector would see its self.

#4 yes it works, here's me no heat detected, beware of the self destruct button.
