Changing a tire requires higher order cognitive and motor skills compared to using a tape measure. And yet they need a video to show them how to use a tape.......
My wife and I bring this up constantly.
I'm well educated and managed to get some shit done. Learned things the easy and hard way and ended up quite a bit better off than most. But never in my life did I think I was going to grow up and invent time travel, or cure cancer, or build a rocket that can fly to Mars or some shit. That was for someone else.
However, the older I get and the more people I encounter, I'm convinced that I have to be one of the smartest people on the fucking planet.

I don't care if none of my boys go to college, they've been helping change oil, filters, rotate tires, maintain furnaces/water heaters, clean out the P trap, pound nails, screw screws, yardwork, load ammo and of course shoot guns and a hundred other basic life skills from the age of 5. Those are valuable things a person needs to know about. None of their peers even know where milk comes from.
I have two nephews that are functionally helpless without money and "technology"
I know a fellow who took his daughter out to practice driving on her permit. He had her change the tire on the car until she could do it herself before he let her drive the interstate ( 5 or 6 times). He made her show him how to do it before she was allowed to drive on her license. I congratulated him on his parenting skills.
Today my wife heads into Stewarts to get me a coffee, I look over and see the middle aged man with the owners manual trying to open the hood on a new jeep Renagade. .... I walk over and now he is leaning in the drivers door pushing the steering wheel lever that lowers the height? ?????? Ohhhhh he also was pushing on the hood like hewas looking for the secret lever..... I reach in and pull the latch and show him how it's done and then how to release the hood latch. No fuckin clue ...
Isn’t it cool when you run into the ones that truly want to learn though? 20 something that is a super for the company and had no clue how he got the job.....till I spent time on a project with him. Damn kids a sponge and works his ass off. Agreed that he would be an exception but still damn cool to see?

What is important to them is not to do anything at all, but to convince the world that they have done something spectacular.
For 30 years I have have enjoyed introducing young people to the world at large. This has included hunting, shooting, fishing, hiking, sailing, working on cars, and even mundane things basic table manners. A recent trip to Caribbean sums up a horrifying and worsening trend. An ever shrinking population of young people, especially young men, care to learn basic knots, minimal navigation skills, or even the nomenclature of the scuba equipment enveloping them. It is a level of willful ignorance and fail that is life-threatening. I do however notice that they are non-stop posting to social media their feats of derring-do and a boasting of having conquered raging seas and evaded probable death in the maws of dangerous sea creatures, when in fact they have done nothing at all but scroll through their phones and snap selfies while others do all the work. The real worry is that the population who are helpless now far exceeds the population who can do anything to help in an emergency.
There is something to be said for letting someone struggle through a problem. When having to sweat through something the lesson is more likely to stick. Please don't change the snowflakes tire, teach them how to do it. If they want to take a selfie while doing such a remarkable thing as spinning a lug wrench, fine. Just fucking do it. If they don't do it they may benefit from standing for a while on the edge of a ditch or in a parking lot while waiting for help to arrive. It may give them time to think about their fail. It benefits humanity.
So now I play the role of instructor who will turn into Captain Bligh at the sight of a cell phone or a hint of any sort of faggotry, for the sake of safety. Or you can just get the fuck off my boat.

First off, wait until you mention plugging a tire to a Millennial and the blank stare you get. Yeah, a few months back, one of my engineers came in late with a "I got a flat and had to wait for AAA to bring a new tire", to which I asked, "Why didn't you just plug it yourself with a plug kit? It's like a $7 kit at Wal-Mart." He gave me a blank look, and all I could do is shake my head and mention something to the effect of "Well, at least AAA employees are being kept employed".
On the flip side though, it is a benefit to those of us that do have the common sense and brain power to do this type of shit. Case in point.
A few years back (okay, like 14yrs or so) I was chasing some tail. Said tail wanted to meet for "Sushi" at some asian restaurant, so I said, sure why not (hell, the sushi was just an appetizer in my mind). At any rate, I roll up in the parking lot, and as I get out of my truck, the young lady comments "I think your tire is flat" and I look and see I ran over a nail/screw. I shrug and mention that I'll change it after dinner, before we leave. So, we have dinner, some polite conversation with some affectionate looks exchanged. As we finish and leave the restaurant, I mention something to the effect of "Well, time to get a little dirty now" and she just looks at me with a strange look. I get out the jack and lug wrench and commence to changing the tire. After changing out the tire, and as I'm retightening the last lug nut (after explaining the skipping lug nut tightening pattern process and why), she leans over my shoulder to appear as to look at the process and whispers in my ear "I am so turned on right now. I've never seen someone so casual about this, and just take care of it so confidently". I must have done a double take, because she chuckled, and I asked "Are you serious?". She said, "Yes. Most guys call AAA. The fact you can take care of it yourself without any worry is pretty hot."
It was a good evening that night...
So, let the SJW's continue to be helpless. The rest of us will just continue to fuck their women and breed the little shits out of the population.

That's crazy. I can do all the work on my shit, although sometimes my back or feet hinder me and I need help now. But I know what I'm doing. I don't recall anyone ever teaching me either... I'd seen it done I guess? I used a book for the engine, etc.

I still don't know the BB trick and he died. I really miss that man, he was a born hunter too, and got it all done with iron sights and cheap old hand me down rifles and shotguns (some almost 100 years old in 80's, and they showed it).
My aunt always said they broke the mold with them, don't make 'em like that anymore. I guess that's more and more true these days.

I taught 2 daughters and 2 sons how to drive. They all learned on stick shifts, even though several of our cars were automatics. They all had to be able to change a tire, check and add oil, coolant and tire pressure. This was before I let them go take their driving test.They all bitched at the time but thanked me later in life. To this day many of their friends can't do any of those things and they're are in their 20's and 30's.

If it's done correctly, not a lot of "goo" glue (if any) is needed. You gotta spin that plug as you're pulling the seater out, to make a knot to seal up against the inner wall of the tire. With a good knot, no "goo" is needed (it's just added insurance). I rarely use glue. Just ream the hole, insert the plug about an inch, then spin two or three times and pull the seater out. Having the tire almost inflated to pressure helps seat the plug as well.
The parents of both these useless fucks are the reason neither know how.
Like they did in their upbringing they called someone else to do the work, namely TV and iPhones.

I've got a theory that these commercials/TV shows/movies/etc with effiminate males and masculine females that know who to call aren't created because that's what people want to see, but rather, that's what whomever wants people to see. Presumably with the objective of creating more beta males over time by giving them pussified faggotry as role models in the digital age where mom and dad work all the time and TV makes a good babysitter.

I understand everything you're saying. I live in Texas, and have been changing tires since I was 11 or 12 years old or however old enough you have to be to be big enough to break a lug nut loose. I grew up in the country and we always did stuff for ourselves.
All that being said, not everyone has parents that teach us this sort of stuff or grow up in a family that even owns a vehicle where he could learn. If he's got a truck now, I assume he's out working and contributing to society and I don't think that you changing a tire for him is the worst thing in the world...although I wish he would have shown some sort of interest in paying attention so he could do it for himself next time.

Several weeks ago on one of the 'chans' was a thread about changing tires and it was alarming the number of idiots who not only didn't know, but were damn proud of it. It's like the whole idea of self-sufficiency was somehow 'icky'. "I'll just call AAA" or "I'll just pay someone else to do it" were common refrains. Even pointing out that a major weather event could cause AAA to take six hours or more to respond couldn't cause the light bulb to illuminate.
