"The Aviator" is one of my favorite contemporary movies and the first third of the film deals with the making of Hell's Angels. It has recently been digitally restored and was fun to watch. Some of the acting was histrionic, but that was par for movies of that era. Bought DVD off internet for less than $10, shipping and all.

On the visual effects side, much of the team that came together to do the effects in "The Aviator" stayed together to do "The Departed", "Key to Reserva", "Shutter Island" and "Hugo." Up until that point Scorcese was apparently not comfortable with visual effects in general, let alone this new "digital post-production stuff."
