Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

Deer season back home in South Dakota was pretty good this year. We shot three decent mule deer on the prairie and my buddy got his cow elk here a couple days ago. I'll try to get some pics up.

Heading out this weekend here in Utah to see if I can't find a dog or two.

Thank you for you service to our country!

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

congrads 223 and stick on the deer. I'm jealous of your hog hunt, I've never gotten the opportunity to go after any myself. Good luck to both of you on your weekend hunts!

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

well it wasn't big game but...

do you hunt waterfowl ?

we went to the #1 blind yesterday got an invite from a guy who knows the area and can really work a duck call (I hope I learned some from osmosis)

We got there it was a light wind and about 57 Degrees the sun came up and the temps dropped and the wind started to blow about 40 not much you can do with that the ducks won't fly or fly real high...still was a good day and I picked up a set of waders for $75.00 from a fellow in the blind.

We have about 54 days of season left so maybe with some luck we will have some pics for you... then it's a wait for Spring Turkey but I have some custom calls coming in January that I will make lanyards for, and head out then

Thank You for your service, stay safe and we will make sure you have some game for you to hunt when you get back..

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

Thanks for posting LngRng. I've done a little bit of waterfowl but not much. The hunting regulations in New York are pretty complicated and I've never quite understood all of them concerning waterfowl. Consequently, the only time I end up going out for waterfowl is when I have someone with me who really knows that they're doing. Good luck this season!

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

Arkansas didn't have a great season, from what I can tell. Warm and windy and the (modern gun) season started late in the rut. They just weren't moving at all. I managed a nice (but not astounding) 9 point and was told it was the best (subjective) harvested from the area so far this year.

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

Hey adm845, seems like deer hunting has been 'spotty' in my AO. Not many guys doing much buck killing. I got lucky & tagged out early...

Got a couple/3 does in the freezer since, via nuisance & WMU tags. All in all, a pretty good year with the Encore. One weekend left, then on to coyotes upstate & duckies in the marsh...

Stay safe over there! The deer will still be here when ya get home...

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

Our season here has been terrible this year. Between coyotes and excessive limits in the past, our numbers are way down. Last year I passed 7 bucks and a hand full of does in the first week of blackpowder. This year I saw 3 deer the whole week and killed a spike and a doe for the freezer out of those. They aren't even leaving sign like normal. Saw two bucks fighting just this morning on the way to work. The rut seems like it's a whole month late here. A couple more weeks then it's after the predators. A guy on our lease is leaving for the service sometime in January. He's quit his job and hunting his ass off right now until he gets the call. Thank you for your service and stay safe.

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

It was a good year in Wyoming this year I was able to fill both my elk and deer tag. We got some early snow this year that really paid dividends while I hunted mule deer. By the time I shot my buck the snow was gone, but it helped me locate where the deer where moving. I was pushing a ridge when a hunter from another canyon fired, as I was watching the area from where the shot came from this buck busted out of the brush to the right of me. I quickly shouldered my rifle and sent the 150gr pill his way, bullet hit him in the neck and immediately fliped him on his back. Shot was at 143yds with a 270 weatherby mag. Looking back on it the shot resembled more of something I would do on a bird hunt rather than deer hunting. The photo sucks, but you get the point. It was so steep I had to use the brush in the picture to keep him from sliding down the mountain while I cleaned him.

Update: the guy mentioned above killed his biggest buck to date right before we got blasted by a snow storm. It was a tall and heavy 7 pt whitetail with a 17.5" inside spread. He's leaving for the Marines next month, what a send off. Couldn't have happened to anybody better.

Re: How's the Hunting!?!?

Sorry guys, havent been on here to check this thread in a while. Glad to head everyones seasons have been going pretty well. Loving the pics of the elk (since I've always wanted to go elk hunting but have never had the chance) and the white-tail (since he's from my home state).

That said . . . Thanks to everyone who has been posting on this thread. With the limited and slow internet we have access to, its not really feasible for me to go through all the different threads, so having one that i can go to for what im looking for is really helpful.
